I just searched for something on and got a “DuckAssist” at the top of the results, right below the ads (of course).

It was basically a ChatGPT like message as if I’d typed the question there.

Stop 👏 putting 👏 👏 in 👏 every 👏 fucking 👏 thing!

Nincowpoop, to DuckDuckGo

I know that I am not the first to bring this up, but is getting more useless by the day. I really try hard to not support fascist billionaires where I can, but the % of times I get useless responses from DDG and have to use Google is now close to 80%.

Feature suggestion for or other engines: let me downvote results.

There is just so fucking much utter garbage, and the people pushing it have (apparently) effective SEO. Let me click a button saying "never allow this domain in my search results ever again."

Im as anti-"AI" as the next person, but I think its important to keep in mind the larger strategic picture of "AI" w.r.t. when it comes to - both have the problem of inaccurate information, mining the commons, etc. But Google's use of LLMs in search is specifically a bid to cut the rest of the internet out of information retrieval and treat it merely as a source of training data - replacing traditional search with search. That includes a whole ecosystem of surveillance and enclosure of information systems including assistants, chrome, android, google drive/docs/et al, and other vectors.

DuckDuckGo simply doesnt have the same market position to do that, and their system is set up as just an allegedly privacy preserving proxy. So while I think more new search engines are good and healthy, and LLM search is bad and doesnt work, I think we should keep the bigger picture in mind to avoid being reactionary, and I dont think the mere presence of LLM search is a good reason to stop using it.

PSA: has succumbed to FOMO and now uses "AI assist" by default (sigh).

You can disable this crap here: https://duckduckgo.com/settings#duckassist

On you can use shortcuts like

"!g something"

to make DDG redirect you to a Google search for "something" instead.

Did you know you can also directly search on other sites, including several community sites?

Why does give so many results to ? and ? And is there any way to change that?

I want a link to the organization that did the journalism, not some scraping site where I can't trust that the link won't go away at some point.

Just saw a TV commercial for #DuckDuckGo. All that money to push #Bing results.

Linux, to Samsung

I deleted my Samsung Account.

I tried changing my e-mail from Gmail to something else, and Samsung kept telling me every e-mail I wanted to use was not allowed. For example, Duck dot Com provided by DuckDuckGo was not allowed.

Samsung was in the way of avoiding Google and so Samsung, had to go. I am not going to compromise. The goal is to delete, Google and Microsoft too.

I was trying to figure out what #EidMubarak actually meant. Sadly, #DuckDuckGo is becoming much more susceptible to #enshittification.

I'm afraid if I want a real #SearchEngine, I may have to have to pay for it with #Kagi.

I'm still a little fuzzy about what "Eid Mubarak" means, but I think it means essentially "Happy Holidays" to those who are participating in the feast at the end of the month of Ramadan. So, if that's you, Eid Mubarak!

Interesting ... are dabbling in "private" AI chat. They have Claude 1.2 Instant from Anthropic and GPT-3.5 Turbo from OpenAI. I wonder how that will go?

"All of your chats here are private, and are never stored by DuckDuckGo or used to train AI models."

"Never stored by DuckDuckGo" I assume means they will be stored by Anthropic and OpenAI 🧐

Typing "frozen" just now in #DuckDuckGo gives zero indication it might have anything to do with water going below zero degrees Celsius.

Sad! #HyperCapitalism

FuckFuckNo. 🤦‍♀️

I just want a search engine that works. I have zero need for a godawful "AI" hallucinating mansplainer in my results. Just… no.

Time to move off of DDG. What else is out there?

Edit: yes, it seems to be for real:

Well #DuckDuckGo drank the cool aid. Can we just not plug hallucinating AI into every single thing? I've been meaning to get #SearXNG going on my infra. I guess it's time now.

So, are doing what they’re calling a private AI chat bot.

https://www.reddit.com/r/duckduckgo/comments/1adxgy4/give_duckduckgo_ai_chat_a_spin/

What’s your take @CatherineFlick ? Is it a good way to protect our privacy or just another ‘sell out’ to AI with all the problems chat bots bring ?

DuckDuckGo being #DuckDuckGo yet again caused a "private" AI to appear. Based on OpenAI, they claim "not to train on your conversations"... but OpenAI will happily take the convos instead.

The "privacy" saying in your authorship is boring, Weinberg. Stick to something new instead.
