Who TF is going to look at #SE82nd and #Burnside in #Portland, blame the drunk #driver, be sad about yet another unfortunate victim, and not question the #trafficEngineers and elected+appointed officials who make the decision every day to maintain this deadly status-quo and its subsidies? The solutions are well within reach if we just had a little leadership instead of police fanboy "democrats" for a govt. #VisionZero#CarsRuinCities
My new hill to die on as an urbanist transportation engineer is stop requiring traffic studies with development applications. They are an insidious cousin of parking minima, where some licensed engineer applies the ITE Trip Generation Manual, a collection of weak statistical analyses of very small samples, to figure out "how many cars to accommodate."
“We are in a #parking garage of a residential building in Williamsburg that is one block from two train lines, but was required to build parking. So we’ve taken over two of those parking spaces and built a fully-furnished and usable studio apartment inside.”
"The 2022 holiday Open Streets saw various city agencies work to fully or partially pedestrianize stretches of Fifth Avenue, Sixth Avenue, West 49th Street and West 50th Street on three Sundays in December.
Overall, business along the pedestrianized streets saw a 13.9 percent bump in transactions and an average of $90,000 in additional spending each day of the Open Street."
Public space is the most valuable resource of #cities, and they squander it on cars. Not "but I need to drive" or "economic activity and essential mobility blah blah blah", we could have all of that with a fraction of the asphalt. Not even "driver convenience". No, it's just stupid extra lanes for the worst drivers to pass law-abiding ones and go wait at a red light sooner, and empty free parking. Wasted. #InducedDemand#CarsRuinCities#Urbanism
I honestly don't believe #PBOT can't do the math on the weight of some concrete barriers, it's the value of keeping cars out of bike lanes that they just don't understand. Children's safety and independence vs the fully-imagined satisfaction of your "customers" that you subsidize at like $5/mile, it's a tough call. #CarsRuinCities#StuffInTheStreet#CarSupremacy#cars1stAlwaysOnly#trafficEngineers#InducedDemand
It's simply amazing, how people will bend their brains around cars. But the absolute failure to apply basic logic to the problems cars cause you and your city is understandable. I mean, who can think their way out of a paper bag with a car parked in their head? #CarBrain#CarsRuinCities#GeometryHatesCars#BanCars
yet another #Portland neighborhood association meeting where the developer is going to build five units of housing with no #Parking, and that's the only thing neighbors are concerned about despite all of them claiming to be environmentalists. 🙄 #CarsRuinCities#GeometryHatesCars#FreeParkingOnADeadPlanet
"The highway would bring extreme noise and pollution to the city. Honestly this is going to harm everybody. It's a nonsense project no matter how you look at it."
As you might have heard, Ms Nearly-10 is on her own bike next to me and we're doing about 10mph, which is clearly too fast to do safely on the narrow sidewalk on the wrong side of the street (which is the only other option here besides riding on the sharrows.) This isn't an enforcement problem, it's bad Engineering that ruins our cities' livability and our kids' independence (though I'm happy to get better video and take a cut of the tickets whenever you're ready for that.) #CarsRuinCities
@cshentrup@robgalanakis I'm just pointing out a handy number for scale, that the city with streetcars running out Belmont and Hawthorne and Barbur and so forth had at one point been building towards before the whole #CarsRuinCities thing.
Kia ora toot friends. (Hello in Māori language)
Tonight I am bringing some #transport, #bikes, #cycling, #urbanism and #antiCar#memes.
I hope you enjoy them and are radicalised like I am. Once you start seeing how we've been trapped by #carDependency you cannot unsee it again.
Let's fight for space for people, cities that are walkable, accesible, clean, green and safe.
Of course, please contribute your own memes to the thread and also radicalise your family, workmates and friends!
