Remember the X8.7 solar flare on May 14, as sunspot region 3664 was rotating away from earth?
The #CME from that flare reached Mars on May 19. Mars rover Curiosity took some nighttime images of the Martian sky hoping to catch an #aurora.
#Mars lacks a global magnetic field, hence Martian aurorae are not concentrated at the poles, but instead appear as a “global diffuse aurora” associated with Mars’ ancient, magnetized crust.
It's not quite as active now, but the aurora was wild earlier. This was just a simple night lapse on my Hero11 - we could see colors and pillars with the naked eye, but the camera is next level
So far, no power outages (or at least, not any noticeable in US) due to the solar storm, per poweroutage.us (outages in Florida are due to wind/tornadic activity earlier). #SolarStorm#CME
Aurora from the Chicago suburbs. Need to color correct these, but was too excited. First time I've seen the aurora and it was over the entire sky! Incredible!!
I think I’m going to plug my computer back in. I don’t see any signs of weird power dips or anything, and it’s annoying just using my phone. Hopefully we don’t get anything that the surge protectors won’t stop, and stay at “pretty lights in the sky tonight” rather than apocalyptic #CarringtonEvent
Czechia is now back, but instead, am losing Romania, even on 756 kHz, which is usually a powerhouse signal 😮
More Romania attenuation makes other signals clear: 630 Tunisia sounds almost like a local! On 531, Radio Algeria International has the frequency all to itself -- well, it's weak too, revealing more NDBs on 527 & 535 kHz.
Only just starting to hear BBC on 693 kHz. 648 Caroline is stronger.
And Lithuania has finally ceded way to 1386 Greece - now w/ audio!
It's an hour past sunset, yet #mediumwave looks as if it was more like an hour before sunset...
Very poor signals, only few listenable ones.
BUT the most shocking thing is 1035 Radio Eli 🇪🇪 is COMPLETELY MISSING, and I'm beginning to lose Lithuania 🇱🇹 on 1386 (it's head-to-head w/ an off-freq Greek #pirate) -- on an unterminated SuperLoop, not a KAZ with a null on them 🤯
No Southern enhancement meanwhile; no Tanzania after TWR s/off on 1377, & no trace of Djibouti on 1116.
U.S/CA Keep an eye on the NOAA geomagnetic activity tracker Tonight-Sunday.
Folks as far south as Alabama, U.S may be treated to an #aurora.
In fact, with 5 CMEs headed our way, everyone across the globe should keep an eye on the night time sky.
NOAA SWPC video of the solar flare that spawned CMEs... Expected to cause some great aurora activity, potential to also cause other mischief (mostly in space/high latitudes). Though it will probably wipe out ham radio too this weekend. #CME#spaceweatherhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dr2BIlDGDk
Incoming! A severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm is expected to arrive around 02:00 UTC Friday night / Saturday morning.
At least 5 Coronal Mass Ejections took place over the past 24 hours, directed towards Earth. These originated from a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664).
There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.
