Climate

is the #1 threat to the world, so we need leaders to phase out FFs & mitigate CC. You wouldn't know there's a problem bc conservatives refuse to address it (owned by FF cos.).

"We need a arts attack

We're in deep, deep, sh*t

We need every actor & musician to be shouting out about climate breakdown at every opportunity

We need flash flooding on
BBC Eastenders

We need A&E overwhelmed by heatwave victims on
BBC Casualty

We need this NOW."
-Bill McGuire

Depressing, esp. for our planet, conservatives are winning in Europe, but the US & UK can change the trajectory. Please share what's at stake with your followers, friends, family, colleagues...

We have but one🌎!

"Europe’s center of political gravity is veering to the right.

Center-right & far-right parties are set to be first past the post in Sun’s EU election in the most populous nations: Germany, France, Italy, Spain & Poland."

There are elections in Hungary for EU parliament and the turnout is unprecedented. Many are NOT happy with Orban who will not help Ukraine. Stay tuned.

EU citizens, your vote for the European Parliament election matters much more than you might think.

From and all the way down to : Some important decisions are due.

We noticed populist right-wing forces co-opting "open-source" by "supporting its adoption".

However, they stand for isolationism (hidden behind "tech sovereignty"), and against international collaboration, openness and transparency; which are what makes awesome.

Choose wisely!

@Codeberg tech sovereignty can be isolationist, but it more obviously is about not being dependent on overseas tech giants.

This is an amazing summary – if you can call a 3hr podcast episode that – of ‘our current predicament’ as a global society:

“Moving from naive to authentic progress: a vision for betterment”
https://pca.st/episode/2e9927b8-e282-41aa-9fb5-1c278ff07ed0

> [in which we] unpack a new paper entitled Development in Progress, an analysis on the history of progress and the consequences of ‘advancement’.

Slightly more digestible by watching/reading this first: https://www.thegreatsimplification.com/animations

gg,

@erlend i applaud the effort…but not long ago we had a thriving news industry where fact-checking was the norm and readers/viewers/listeners had faith that the presentation was objective.
i wish there was more attention to reviving the industry (in new technologies) and in raising awareness that without a strong unbiased and healthy media we are growing less informed and more divisive.

thanks for the link. look forward to the report. dm me when you publish. thanks.

gg,

@erlend i should add that my reaction above is to your first article on your site.
i have long objected to the “value” and emphasis on growth, often at all costs. i wish “improve” and “do better” were valued more.

AP News calling environmental protestors "oil supporters". It's no wonder the world is the way it is, if these are kind of news platforms that keep us "informed" about issues #climate #protest #UK #news #media

This sounds -- not good.

"Almost four out of every 10 #journalists covering the #climate crisis and environment issues have been threatened as a result of their work, with 11% subjected to physical violence, according to groundbreaking new research.

Despite the breadth and magnitude of the problems, 39% of journalists surveyed reported having #SelfCensored – mostly due to fear of repercussions from “those undertaking illegal activities” or the government."

@CelloMomOnCars It's the same as other disturbing subjects... It's not a climate-related problem. This tendency to be unable to see the bigger picture is one of the reasons why the world is losing trust in journalists.

Follow the💰, TFG's goal is to enrich himself & his wealthy donors, damned be #climate & the 99% (disregard refs. to #TFG & RU *he was compromised):

TFG is going to wealthy donors & interest groups & offering to cede policymaking to them—in exchange for massive campaign contributions. He made a pitch to oil execs: For $1B, he'd, as pres. “reverse dozens of Pres Biden’s ENVIR rules & policies & stop new ones.” +Do the bidding of Miriam Adelson -she'll be his biggest donor.

‘Godfathers of climate chaos’: UN chief urges global fossil-fuel advertising ban

"António Guterres called on news and tech media to stop enabling “planetary destruction” by taking money while warning the world faces “ crunch time” in its faltering attempts to stem the crisis."

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/jun/05/antonio-guterres-un-chief-fossil-fuels-advertising

WATCH which news outlets carry this story. That separates the adults from the ones who take candy from the fossil fuel industry.

@CelloMomOnCars@mastodon.social avatar

Where fossil fuel related ads are banned:

Amsterdam, NL (incl. air travel, ICE cars)
France (partial)

Proposals in progress:
Canada
Ireland

And
"The city of Edinburgh in Scotland is looking to prohibit adverts for fossil fuel companies, airlines, airports, SUVs, cruise ships and petrol and diesel cars in council-owned spaces."

https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/06/06/un-chief-calls-on-governments-to-stop-fossil-fuel-ads-where-are-they-already-banned

CelloMomOnCars,
@CelloMomOnCars@mastodon.social avatar

There are lessons from the history of bans on advertising.

  1. Ban from one venue, they go to another, less regulated one.
  2. Comprehensive bans reduces smoking.
  3. There are loopholes, e.g. "Influencers" are not counted as advertising, e-cigs are not included, etc.
  4. There are effective ways other than an outright ban.

As we all know, countries do manage to reduce smoking:

It was also the 11th consecutive month where the global average temperature was at least 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average."

This tells you everything you need to know about how serious the fossil fuel industry is about the clean energy transition.
