abdalian, I’m thrilled to announce that I will be moving to #Philadelphia for a fellowship at the American Philosophical Society, where I will continue working on locating, building, and analyzing a corpus of #Tunica language documentation, as well as gathering all information I can on the history and culture of the Tunica-Biloxi people.
headword, @abdalian @linguistics Congratulations! 🥳🎉
JJHP3, @abdalian @linguistics Welcome to Philadelphia! APS is a great place.

acm_redfox, Apparently I stopped one day short of covering all my photos from the Philadelphia plant show! Probably because my kid had an entry in this category, which is also hard to photograph. Miniature gardens/landscapes, which covers a range of approaches. Info in alt-text; 2nd post to follow.
#FlowerShow #Philadelphia #PHS #miniatureLandscapes #fairyGardens
Close shot of the front of the caravan, showing the bark roof, the teensy pots near the door, and other details like the railing and steps and wooden wagon wheel.
A different take on the category, involving a desert gorge setting with a river running through rocks diagonally across the box. There's also something like a miner's shack. Plants here are mostly in the corner and all succulents or cacti. I think. I especially like the round cactus in the lower left, which is surrounded by tiny spherical pups. My daughter noted that this exact gorge + shack was entered last year, although the plants have matured and/or been changed. That seemed a little unfair to both of us, although the judges weren't bothered.
A couple of the other entried, showing a higher ratio of plant life to landscaping and building work One appears to have a gravel path, park bench, and tree (maybe 5 inches tall) with a lot of moss and ferns. The other is more desertish and has a variety of succulents lining a stone path.
acm_redfox, Here's my daughter's entry, which also had a lot less building, but above-average creativity. She was inspired by the mosaic lizard in Gaudi's gardens in Barcelona (photo in the half of the photos I haven't posted, but link here: https://wanderingtrader.com/travel-photos/parc-guell-lizard-barcelona/) and built a two-tiered planter with lizard and bowl.
#succulents #PHS #creativity #lizard #mosaic
The rest of the planted lizard garden. Here we see the rest of the bowl, including his mosaic body at the upper left, with his tail extending along the rim of the bowl and becoming a waterfall into a mosaic-bottomed pool. Next to the tail are several tall succulents with leaves only at the top, giving them the appearance of palm trees. Within the curve of the tail are a couple of bright red plants, and again the shapes and colors vary throughout the bowl. In front can just be made out part of the map of species that must be included with each entry.
I decided that this was hard to make sense of in those two photos, so here is the finished lizard before he had the "waterfall" added to his tail and before anything was added (dirt or plants). A clearly abstract lizard shape is made of a turquoise material, with compartments in the head (small), body (medium), and tail (open to the dropoff into the bowl), following the curve of the left side and back of the bowl. All surfaces are covered with brightly colored mosaic tiles in a mix of shapes. Only one of the lizard's feet is visible, supported on a rock inside the bowl, with round gecko toes. The planter is sitting on some newspaper, where bits of grout dust have collected.
Deus, @acm_redfox Chaotically beautiful. Talented!

travissouthard, Hey #philadelphia, utlitity shutoffs have been allowed again about a month ago.
Cutting off people's access to water, heating/cooling, and electricity will not make it easier for them to pay their bills but it will make their lives more dangerous. How to prevent a water shutoff: https://clsphila.org/utilities/how-to-prevent-water-shutoffs/

chip, Much to the dismay of my NY friends, I occasionally refer to #Philadelphia as the 6th borough. Seems like some locals are sensing that sentiment too and are not very pleased.

UnicornRiot, NEW: Imminent ‘Cleanups’ Scheduled Under #Philadelphia ‘State of Emergency’ Kensington Operations
A schedule obtained by Unicorn Riot shows an imminent government plan to “cleanup” specific locations in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood tomorrow AM.

Radical_EgoCom, @UnicornRiot
This reminds me of 1984 Orwellian doublespeak. "War is Peace", Freedom is Slavery", "Location Clean-up". Linguistic manipulation meant to conceal the dark truth of their actions.
UnicornRiot, With Mayor Parker’s new pressure to remove people, any plan to force people into “treatment or jail” decisions hinges on District Attorney Larry Krasner’s discretion. The de facto policy right now doesn’t push jail time for simple drug possession.

acm_redfox, Anyway, kid's birthday involved making terrariums at spiffy local shop Pretty Green Terrariums. Fairly involved, makes a closed system with a few bugs to ... balance... I dunno. Was hovering outside. Neat components, teens were very engrossed, products varied a lot with personalities. Highly recommend for groups, couples, or any plant-lovers!
Close shot of the tools and rocks -- there are metal bowls holding medium rocks, small pebbles, and various colors of gravel and other components. Tools include a pointed cork digger, a scoop, and some kind of slim metal spatula for pushing things around. The table is covered with a black tarp or oilcloth.
A shot showing some of the array of plants the kids could choose among -- they're in tiny (1.5-2") pots, all collected in a black plastic tray. There are vines and begonias and some compact plants with white or red veins. To the left of the plants is a pair of tweezers for handling them.
Close shot of one of the essentially complete jars -- layers of different kinds of rocks, peat, and dirt (?) can be seen, as well as large decorative rocks and three kinds of plants arranged artfully. At the end, the jars were sprayed with a natural fungicide to keep mushrooms or mildew at bay, and then a breeding pair of white pill bugs were added. And a lid.
skyfaller, @acm_redfox I finally got a chance to stop by this shop yesterday! It was pretty cool, I bought their coloring book
