Taffer, Weird Lemmy thing… I appear to be able to create a post for KDE@lemmy.kde.social, but if I subscribe to it, the sub is pending.
Is my post pending? Is it going to vanish into the ether? Can anyone (ie, bots) post there without subscribing?
I'm on the programming.dev instance if that matters. 🤷
Taffer, Oh, apparently my post was killed, I got a notification:
Your post https://programming.dev/post/13016987 has been removed as you do not have enough activity on your account to create image posts in that community
Taffer, Maybe this time? https://programming.dev/post/13017073
mima, Tbh I think the #Threadiverse like #Lemmy and #kbin would make a lot more sense if they were simply frontends and perhaps a backend too but just for the forums themselves. IOW, no accounts live in Lemmy or kbin, all users post from their preferred #fediverse account instead.
Sure you can already technically do that from your #Mastodon or #Misskey or whatever fedi you're in, but that means using whatever app you're on right now, which almost certainly means it's not a #linkaggregator UI. Not ideal at all.
If I had any good programming skills I'd make it so that the link aggregator is merely a client that uses the Mastodon (with #Pleroma extensions too) and Misskey APIs, treat (almost) all #ActivityPub actors as their own forums or subs, and each post would be a boost from said actor. Users authenticate from their preferred fedi account. Voting would be tallied by few special actors, which internally receive votes via direct messages (the app will make this transparent, but this also means you can technically vote without the app if you know the exact command), which will effectively make votes secret to non-admins like in #Reddit. Users can also choose which vote counters they want to rely from.
This would make the fediverse-powered link aggregator very flexible and minimal, imo. It may look janky but that's the general idea I have. :seija_coffee:
RE: https://mementomori.social/users/owen/statuses/112285464236904945
buru5, i would like to use #lemmy as a federated online tree with different communities forming the branches but it's hard to take seriously when the userbase turns it into reddit 2.0 with literal crossposting from r/gaming; there are even communities using the same nomenclature as their reddit counterparts ("mildlyinfuriating," "nottheonion," etc). lemmy has appropriated the cancer-culture that it was created to avoid.
buru5, i tried to make a community there and even posted interactive threads and i will continue to do so because i want to believe in the power of federated social media to form interesting online experiences, but it seems most would rather post motivational-posters-2.0 on l/retrogaming instead of participating in classics like "random thoughts .... WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?"
18+ jake4480, @buru5 oh wow nice. Hadn't seen anyone I know using it a bunch. And yeah, the reddit obsession is dumb. Same with people that repost Twitter screenshots here. Like, stoppppp 🤣

pixel, finally moved off beehaw and to pawb.social for my home #lemmy instance
i really like beehaw's community but i dont want it to be my home instance given they've defederated with most of the active corners of the fediverse. hopefully this gets me more active on lemmy since i'm slipping back towards reddit lol
pixel, @neatchee also as long as something is federating with lemmy.world i have ownership over my experience by subscribing to the communities i'd want anyway, so that's really all i was looking for. I didn't tend to browse /r/all on reddit, so I don't think much is lost for me here if I'm not on the same instances as most of the communities i'd be engaging with
neatchee, @pixel gotcha. I definitely spent most of my time in r/all heh. I want the fire hose of whatever the fuck prior people happen to be interested in at any given moment. I mostly used Reddit for discovery rather than following specific interests
BeAware, So, @eatyourglory and I were discussing Lemmy and he had a good question/idea. Could Lemmy communities technically be subdomains? Like instead of Lemmy.world/c/example, it could be example.lemmy.world?
Would this be something that could be theoretically built into Lemmy or is there some kinda technological limitation, making this not a thing..? I think it's a neat idea.🤷♂️🤔
CWSmith, The issue is DNS.
Subdomains have to be entered into the Domains dns registry. Now, I think there is a way to do it on the fly, but the issue is gonna be there really.
And at the end of the day, is the complexity of that worth it when just using standard paths works?
CWSmith, Now that I think of it, You'ld also have an issue at the server config. I don't know how you would setup Apache or Nginx to host that.
jeromechoo, If you’re not on #Lemmy yet this is the kind of quality shower thoughts you’re missing out on.
doomsdayrs, I just found out that the #lemmy community has made a #phpBB and an #OldReddit frontend

Luckily #nodebb is implementing federation too which should help bring interest in the format.

Draconic_NEO, [Bug] Gifs don't upload on the instance
I tried to upload a gif but I get this error message when doing so:
{"data":{"msg":"Failed external validation","files":null},"state":"success"}
I can upload any other type of image but gifs always fail for some reason.
Does anyone have any clue what could be going wrong? There's obviously something wrong with pictrs but I'm not sure what.Mentioning admins for visibility
@Db0
@RandomLegend @Flatworm7591
Draconic_NEO, @db0 @WeirdGoesPro would probably require modifying Lemmy to be able to do it unfortunately, and that's hard because of the Lemmy Devs' weird insistence on using rust.
db0, I’m already in talks with the pict-rs dev to provide me a necessary feature. If they do it, I will hack the lemmy source myself to achieve it.
shalien, French
robotalien, French @shalien afaik all the problems with #lemmy are problems with the #fediverse. It would have worked just fine if it was an unfederated open source reddit clone.
shalien, French @robotalien My issues are linked to how Lemmy ui communicate with the backend. Nothing related to the fedi and my post was more of a joke than anything else.
thegreybeardofthetree, (edited ) #experiment tagging @mozilla @mozilla @firefox @firefox to see if this post shows up on #lemmy .
Apparently your mastodon posts show up on Lemmy under the right circumstances (tagging a Lemmy community). 🤞
Edit: if I remove the tagging, will the post magically disappear from Lemmy too?
Edit:
For mastodon users wondering about this, here's the corresponding Lemmy thread: https://lemmy.ml/post/13358920Mastodon thread for Lemmy users: https://fosstodon.org/@thegreybeardofthetree/112120405122806398
pseudo, (edited ) Hi, wanna do experiment across the fediverse? Here is a community dedicated to that: !testfediverse
From my experience with Miskey forks, which behave almost like mastodon, to post from the twittoverse to Lemmy, you need to make sure the community is federated to your instance. To do that, open it like using the same url pattern for a remote user. Example with Sharkey : go to sharkey.world/@firefox.
Then write a note with a mention to the community just like it was a user. Do not mention more than one community because it will post only on one.
The first paragraph will be repeated as you title so avoid mentions and hashtags there.
On !testfediverse we have tutorial on how to do that and also how to post from Lemmy to Mastodon. It is in french but you could use a translator or ask mods for advice.
Have fun with the fediversion!
