Last issue of @thecontinent in 2023 made me laugh out loud, the inital comic strip on page 3 nails it. https://www.thecontinent.org/_files/ugd/287178_b45db2b522d94ed1b44bdadfb5ce0069.pdf?index=true

visited the museum of communism in prague and it was fun to see all the anti-communist tropes in one place, like how bad it was that the state built a lot of housing

wvi,

@parismarx And the recent governments were not able to create an environment that would be able to build a fraction of it. If you want to beat the dog you always find a stick.

Since I've seen a lot of chatter about people switching to #Firefox as Google ramps up the enshitification of #Chrome, let me tell you about a killer feature for people who (a) need multiple accounts on the same websites (eg. devs) or specifically (b) have to use multiple Google accounts.

Firefox has an official addon called Multi Account Containers that lets you trivially set up color coded tabs that have separate sets of cookies. Log into your dev account in one, and your test account in another. Log into your personal #gmail in one and have another tab next to it with your work Gmail. I'm actually not signed in to any Google accounts in most my tabs, I just have containers for the specific tasks I do on Google products.

It'll take you 30 seconds to set up.

Add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Mozilla's explanation: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/containers

wvi,

@Sh4d0w_H34rt @ricci How come I can use it as the only browsers on all tablets and phones and not suffer any bad experience? Sounds like you are not using it at all.

I keep thinking about trying to write another zine about git -- for me git is something I feel totally confident using and I never really run into problems, and I really wish I could telepathically send that sense of confidence to everyone who’s struggling with git

wvi,

@b0rk I am not very confident with git but very confident with the integration to my editor. Are people really using git or most of the time it is some editor/IDE integration?

Meta, Google, Microsoft refuse to designate some of services as 'gatekeepers' (=obligations due to EU Digital Markets Act). MS argues that Bing does not have enough users. Apple similarly, for... iMessage. Is iMessage use so low (<45mn monthly EU users)? https://www.ft.com/content/137d655b-c264-460f-bbe8-a269f0a3d8ac

wvi,

@LukaszOlejnik Texting is not so popular most people tend to use other things like FB messenger, WhatsApp, Signal, Viber or Telegram. I know very few iPhone users using iMessages so I would not be totally surprised but I don't really believe that it is so low.

Yes, you can ditch #GoogleMaps now..

https://organicmaps.app

#OrganicMaps is here. Use it while offline and feel good about a #privacy-respecting app that doesn't suck you dry of your personal information. Based on #OpenStreetMap this app is gonna blow #Google #Maps out of the water (hopefully ;)

wvi,

@smallcircles @organicmaps How is it different from https://osmand.net/ I've been using osmand for offline maps for a while and I am quite happy so wondering what are the differences.

i’m tired of clicking “open in browser” in my mastodon client to see all the replies to a post / look at a user’s profile who i don’t follow

is there any mastodon client with a “fetch more data” button or something which will automatically do this for me and show the posts to me in the client?

(right now I’m using Ivory)

wvi,

@b0rk What OS? On Android I am using Tusky and seems resonable (I rarely am asked to open in external software), on desktop I don't bother with client and use browser.

if you use Linux on your personal computer: what do you like about it?

I used to be super into customizing my window manager, but now I mostly like that it's so easy to install software, and that the environment is the same as on a Linux server

(please no arguing about whether people "should" use Linux on their personal computers, I'm just curious about why you personally like it)

wvi,

@b0rk The power to change anything I don't like and the ease of getting software and/or solutions. Heck even games are now easy to play so there is even less incentives then ever before.

I am Dutch :krulorange: I live in Munich, Germany. An old friend once warned me about living in Germany. It was two sentences. It still haunts me, as it seems to be so true, but I really hope it isn't.

"Germans have this wonderful talent to find new problems in every solution. Everything is "Ja, aber" (yes, but)"

Would you agree?

wvi,

@jwildeboer Not just Germans, we Czechs under the heavy German influence do it even better then Germans 😂
