If anyone here has a tip for an easy workflow to export a LibreOffice Impress slides + speaker notes file into a single HTML page that's organized something like https://www.changeset.nyc/resources/quick-intro-to-grants.html (slides side-by-side with speaker notes), I'd love to know it. The default HTML exports, at least in LibreOffice 7.0.4.2, don't do what I want.

Anyone have experience with online courseware tools that they like?

Features I'm looking for:

  • flexible course content (text, video, slides)
  • both at-your-own-pace and scheduled synchronous video sessions
  • cohort-based (e.g. session runs 7/1-7/15)
  • assignments and "turning in" documents
  • forums or discussion threads for peer-to-peer and student-instructor convo
  • nice simple clean student experience

Not Google Classroom - I've used it and dislike it

Thinking of doing an offer on the newsletter: you send me proof you sponsor open source, I’ll give you a free subscription 🤔

https://buttondown.email/carlton

Update: OK, that's on. Subscribe. Send me the weakest screenshot. That'll do. If it's $5 I'll give you three months. If it's loads, I'll give you a year. (Loose terms. No stress.)

🚀 I had a great time at @pycon US 2024 in Pittsburgh! 🌍✨ It was an amazing experience connecting with passionate individuals from around the world and exploring the vibrant city of Pittsburgh. 🌉

There are better ways, but sometimes simply changing the form of the import statements can untangle the problem:

I hope folks in the US remember this , Since 9/11 - more service members and veterans die by suicide than combat every year.

I met some new folks at PyCon US this year, but with so many attendees, there was not nearly enough time, and I surely missed a bunch of people. Who's doing cool stuff in the Python community that I should be following? Who's doing cool and important behind-the-scenes work that doesn't get talked about much?

(Boosts appreciated.)

🐍🧪 Python 3.13.0 is due out in October 2024 and work is underway to implement experimental support for PEP 703 "Making the Global Interpreter Lock Optional in CPython".

As the Steering Council noted in their acceptance of the PEP, to succeed it's important to have community support.

I wrote a little guide on how you can help test out the beta in your project, and help us find bugs in CPython:

🐍🧪 Python 3.13 beta 2 is out!

https://discuss.python.org/t/3-13-0b2-now-available/55056

The macOS installer joins the Windows installer in adding an option to install free-threaded binaries as python3.13t, making it even easier to try it out.

See https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/120098 for all the details, and https://dev.to/hugovk/help-us-test-free-threaded-python-without-the-gil-1hgf for an overview.
