This evening I was taking my #kids home from school, after #MissEntropy’s swimming lesson, holding them by their little hands, the three of us chatting as dusk fell — and I thought that was the most important thing I’d done all day. That might be the most important thing I do in my life, too.

While that racist Boer dildo Elon rakes #profit blowing up #rockets in our shared atmosphere ... who do you suppose gets the bill for the negative externalities? Hmm?

Oh, right. We do.

#Capitalism exists on the back of an accounting scam. Repeat after me, and burn it on the back of your eyelids:

There is no profit if we force capitalists to account for the negative impacts we allow them subsidize at our collective expense.

What negative impacts do a great musician, a very skilled surgeon, or a freelance journalist have?

tripu,

@thesquirrelfish

So Justin Bieber, U2, Jay Leno or Gloria Steinem aren’t capitalists?

Most people are so binary in their thinking,

and the tenets of “the ” and those of “the ” have shifted so much (sometimes even exchanging places) in the last couple of decades,

that I want to write a post titled “Am I on the Right?”

(kind of like did)

listing all the views I have that would be automatically considered left-wing by many people today.

And then perhaps “Am I on the Left?”, too.

tripu,

A teaser:

  • I want abortions to be not only legal but also publicly subsidised
  • Ditto about euthanasia
  • Ditto about hormone therapy and sex-reassignment surgery
  • I am pro same-sex marriage
  • I want more and freer migration
  • I want the Sate to provide safety nets
  • I am against the death penalty
  • I want all drugs to be legal for adults (but also regulated)
  • I think the State should be completely secular (no official religion, no subsidies for churches, no mentions of god)
tripu,

@freemo

I’m surprised you’re in favour of subsidies for churches (or “any other nonprofit so long as they operate as a nonprofit”). I’m against subsidies for all those institutions in general — churches are just one category.

In fact, I take it even further: no subsidies for non-profits nor for-profits, in principle. One possible exception (there may be others): industries that are vital for national security or for long-term survival etc.

Yes, I may be with you wrt education (it’s an issue I haven’t made up my mind about yet).

What other “government-issued grants” do you have in mind?

I think generating and selling images of any kind is not a problem in itself. There might be legit use cases. eg, every World War II game is in essence a carousel of CGI depicting a war that happened, complete with actual events and historical figures, sometimes adding wild distortions of alternative developments.

What why need is to enforce standards and social norms to make sure that those images (or sound clips, or texts, or videos) always carry a footer and/or watermark, plus separate metadata, clearly indicating that they are CG. Let’s make it unthinkable for a news outlet (or an individual) to use those images hiding the fact that they are not “real”.

#JS #Node #tip:

See what #npm packages your project is no longer using with this one-liner:

npx npm-check | grep -i 'notused?' | rev | cut -d'?' -f2 | cut -d' ' -f1 | rev

(Treat the list as a hint: npm-check isn’t capable of detecting all possible usages of all packages, so there might be false positives.)

I don’t hate #ElonMusk. I have very mixed feelings about what he has done in the world, and what his goals are.

But if he has attacked #Wikipedia in any way, that’s too much even for me.

tripu,

@freemo

To me, this amounts to an attack:

I have much respect for #Wikipedia as a project and as a community. And about the #Wikimedia #Foundation, I doubt those veiled accusations against it are substantiated.

A in today.

I have said with pride that I can’t be offended, that I’m immune to that.

I’m still not offended by the existence of “dog bakeries” — but it gets close to that.

I don’t blame specifically the shop owners (who detected a market need) or the clients (who are vulnerable to whims, curiosity and overindulgence, like anyone who cares for another creature). I blame us all, collectively, for creating a society and a moral code that enables this and doesn’t give a second thought to the logic (or lack thereof) behind this.

Our priorities are so skewed. Our allocation of resources, empathy and attention is zero-sum. We neglect unthinkable quantities of suffering afflicting billions of sentient beings every day but pay for a spoiled caniche to eat a cute cupcake.

tripu,

@admitsWrongIfProven

I think we should not strive to be distracted from calamities and suffering.

tripu,

@LouisIngenthron

Of course we need distractions. There are many distractions that are gratis, productive, generous, creative — or at least neutral. And there are distractions were we can justify real improvement in well-being for us or for others.

Choosing to spend your time visiting a “dog bakery” and to pay for a fake carrot cake to actually malnourish and spoil a poodle which couldn’t care less about the texture of the thing or the colours of its toppings (or about how well it shows on Instagram, or about the childish impulses of its owner) ticks none of the boxes above, and is so patiently decadent, pointless and wasteful that I wouldn’t put it in the same box as “doing the crossword”, “watching a TV programme” or “juggling”.

Just an opinion.

I don’t trust online reviews and I don’t trust awards given by voting online. I’ve seen too much begging for positive reviews and votes.

    Really?

    Is it preferable to make bigots “unsafe” than to make minorities safe?

    The GOP-led House is in disarray and focused on all the wrong things. They couldn’t even get a bill to fund the Pentagon through a procedural vote because five of their far-right members revolted. And now Speaker McCarthy has pulled the continuing resolution to fund the government, one that was hammered out by the different factions this weekend, from any consideration because it also doesn’t have the votes.

    Instead of doing their job and passing a budget—one they already agreed to earlier this year—they are preceding with an impeachment inquiry into President Biden because the Orange Guy insists he shouldn’t be the only impeached candidate up on stage. The hearing will now happen just two days before the government shuts down because they don’t have a budget in place.

    This is the GOP in a nutshell, folks. Paralysis, political theatrics, and chaos.
