So, one lens on the weird direction of the modern Internet is that entities created to route you to cool stuff, e.g. search, social media, have especially in the last 5-10 years been taking an ever larger part of the pie via having giant networks. Google can now control whether a news site lives or dies. Meta can take 99.5% of all ad revenue displayed next to an artist's work and they have no power.

Long-term effect? Damage to the creative class.

thinkMoult,
@thinkMoult@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith you'd think that with the barriers to entry to self hosting your own blog, gallery, video website, resume, portfolio, etc over time we'd get greater diversity on the web.

But I guess people are fine with being channeled and it's too much work to surf the web yourself.

I find it fascinating how #Gentoo #Linux had an income of about $1,500 per month last year. It's seemingly peanuts for a well established distro with over 400 unique committers (Blender has ~200)! In comparison, Inkscape has an income of ~$7,200 per month and Blender has an income of ~$160,000 per month.

The W3C publishing ethical web principles is like OPEC publishing ethical climate principles.

Who are the members of the W3C?

Google,
Facebook (Meta),
Amazon,
Adobe,
SoftBank,
Yahoo!,

The W3C is the standards body of surveillance capitalism.

Ethical principles? W3C? Don’t make me laugh!

If they had any ethics they’d have expelled their most prominent members starting with Google and Facebook.

thinkMoult,
@thinkMoult@mastodon.social avatar

@aral I might add a little bit of nuance to this. A person isn't a company, and a company isn't a person. Big companies have pockets of people doing both good and bad things for both good and bad reasons. The bigger company, the bigger the potential for both the successes and mistakes. When multiple companies collaborate, more so.

Hey, does anyone have any software development work that needs doing? I have some free months that need filling with contracts!

I know a number of languages including but certainly not limited to Python, Java, C, JavaScript, Vala, Haskell, Lua, Julia, GLSL, & more.

I have experience with standards & standards-setting, geospatial data, metadata, linked-data, opensource, static websites, GTK apps, & I'm developing a browser engine.

Also: I enjoy speaking!

Qustion about funding FOSS development. So there are FreeCAD, QGIS and GRASS (and maybe Blender Foundation) who issue grants to developers. Then there's Mozilla Foundation who do awards and Python Foundation who sponsor events. Then there's GSoC and various foundations like NLnet Foundation who issue grants for development of FOSS project. Epic Megagrants are there somewhere too.

Who else do you know? I'm particularly interested in software projects having grant systems of their own.

Question to architecture peeps: why are windcatchers, common in old houses in the Middle East, not used much elsewhere in the world in similar climate?

thinkMoult,
@thinkMoult@mastodon.social avatar

@prokoudine One possible answer is to look at a psychrometric chart with passive strategies overlaid and see how that affects the % of comfort throughout the year (see example img). If the % is too low, it's not practical (or unfortunately no longer acceptable compared to an air-con'd box).

Does anybody know if there is any research done on ballpark project statistics for famous creative FOSS projects (#Blender, #Godot, #GIMP, #Krita, #FreeCAD, etc) for things like their annual income, annual downloads (approximated of course), size of dev team, number of unpaid contributors, annual bugs, funding model, project age, etc?

Trying to learn more about sustainable creative #FreeSoftware #OpenSource and put some numbers to it.

prokoudine, to random

Bounties don’t help users fund FOSS projects in a sustainable manner. Here is why that is the case and what better ways are out there

https://ondsel.com/blog/software-bounties-are-a-dumb-idea/

thinkMoult,
@thinkMoult@mastodon.social avatar

@prokoudine completely agree with this from my experience.

What's interesting however is how the #IFCJS guys are doing things. They're open source, but culturally more akin to a private company. They've raised a few hundred thousand USD by preselling training courses with a lot of marketing, even before the software is complete or mature, then used the income to pay bounties. It seems almost significantly bounty driven.

Time will tell if it's sustainable.

Today's commit writes docs about the binary tree feature. Creating a geometry tree allows you to quickly filter objects by coordinates and bounding boxes.

This feature is useful for doing any type of geometric analysis. For example, what pipes are going through an opening and therefore what fire rating should they have? Or select a subset of objects in a 3D bounding box in a large building.

https://github.com/IfcOpenShell/IfcOpenShell/commit/a980ce1bfad49b00f6b5b9495ac7921acc25e8e7 - this commit in the #BlenderBIM Add-on reimplements camera snapshot images in BCF results from clashes.

What this means is that if you do collision detection between two models, you get nice image previews where two objects intersect. This is critical when architects and engineers coordinate designs. Pipes shouldn't go through beams!

louis, to fediverse
@louis@emacs.ch avatar

I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.

Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.

I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.

@aral @louis what if there was a pledge of mastodon instances to only grow to a maximum of 150 users (or 1k, whatever) and anybody who is part of the pledge must defederate with any instance larger than this? "The small federation pledge" :)
