@evan I think my qualification is to extend it to general internet access, unless that's what we mean by "social web". I guess you don't have a right to participate in a privately owned app, though (similar to xkcd 1357).
@mattblaze What I really like about these is that, at first glance, I'm never sure if they're from the archives or recent. I mean, you mentioned the date on this one and I know at a glance how you tend to post your photos. But still, without context, I would have no idea when this particular photo was taken.
"All men have an emotion to kill; when they strongly dislike some one they involuntarily wish he was dead. I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituary notices with great satisfaction."
@thomasfuchs I suspect folks install Beat Saber and then forget anything else exists. It's about the only thing I can tolerate on the Quest 2, given the janky resolution.
(not tried hooking up to a PC for the extra grunt, yet)
I hope some day we can understand the incredible amount of science that dogs go through when selecting the proper spot to do their business. There must be contemplations of magnetic north, the position of stars, what the neighbor dog has for dinner 2 days ago, and the position of the sun in the sky. As i think about it, it’s really is amazing they can pick a spot at all.
Reddit is killing 3rd party apps. Why? Those 3rd party apps filter out Ads and spam/scams and have good focus on usability. Reddit want only two options: Their shity Website or official app to show you more Ads. This is why the central cloud and forums are evil. @evan The number of devices exploited for issues already patched is really unfortunate. I mean, I get it - you want to open your laptop and have it wake, do a few things, then shut the lid and have it go back to sleep. There in the same state the next time you open it. Your phone/tablet the same, most likely.
I suspect most* people need a default of updates happening seamless, while maintaining the device state. Somehow.
*I know power users will want to opt out, due to iffy new drivers, etc.
Having bad thoughts about selling my house and buying a bit of land to put some smaller houses on for my family. I need to start playing the lottery, I think.
@atomicpoet Are we sure that's the case? The App Store spotlight recommended a slew of apps, not just the official one. How might growth have been hindered?
It would be interesting to know, should such a metric be measurable, how much spare capacity each server has. Although given capacity also affords faster response, it may be difficult to discern.
More generally, I think smoother growth allows admins to establish robust moderation without the stress of coping with scaling.
@atomicpoet Please always assume that I did, although I appreciate not everyone does.
You used the word "prove" that a default instance doesn't grow Mastodon, after a list of conjectures. I think an "are we sure?" is a reasonable follow-up. Do the conjectures demonstrate why growth may be hindered?
Did you consider my third point that smoother, less spike-driven growth might be a good thing?
As not to lose context, I'll reply to the first post with further thoughts.
I am taking another long weekend to be a beach bum and work on I.E
I rented some servers in the US to set up a local PoP for Infosec.exchange to (hopefully) reduce latency and improve performance. I am a bit skeptical that it’ll help a lot until I have a redis and Postgres two-way replicated locally. One of the advantages of using bunny.net for dns is that I can have dns resolve to different IPs based on location, like a regular CDN.
I am going to upgrade the instance to the latest glitch-soc code
I am going to finish getting Matrix up for people to use
I am going to experiment with dragonflydb as a replacement for redis Postgres two-way replicated between the US and Germany on a test instance (or maybe new instance?)
I’m also going to apply the latest updates to pixel and see about moving to the containerized RC version of calckey on Infosec.town
I'm not a fan of the thing that some streaming services are doing whereby you finally decide what to watch, pick it and press play and then they pre roll a trailer for another TV show entirely.
Like excuse me, I just finally decided what to watch. Please don't show me something else now. Of course I'm going to skip that shit.

(No, this would not work with Mastodon because there being no firehose or search API, and people get belligerent when you use their content even when it’s an art project.)
@thomasfuchs I'm so tired of being belittled by proponents of LLMs when I attempt to voice similar sentiments. Of course, it being the fad du jour means I'm dealing with it at work either way.
Not once did I say that running Owncast is expensive. The server software itself isn’t costly to run, and doesn’t require much in the way of hardware specs.
I said that video is expensive. Which it typically is, especially compared to text, photos, audio, etc.
Now if @owncast knows of ways to save on the cost of video, I’m sure everyone would like to learn how. Because it’s not just me who’s concerned about the cost of video. It’s a whole lot of people who would be running an Owncast server but haven’t yet.
So tell me how to do it. If I’m streaming all my video games, I’d rather use #Owncast than #Twitch.
Published a little early because it’s ready and whatever: My latest @tedium highlights a just-announced effort to revive #IRIX, the iconic #SGI operating system, in the modern day.
@ernie Fascinating, had no idea the old SGI machines were still so popular (for actual use, rather than just preservation).
Really interesting tidbit towards the end, too. I knew of the Windows 11 hardware like in the sand, had no idea there was an Apple equivalent for Macs.
@dangillmor ah, you know what, I'm done with HP. I got off the inkjet train with the Brother laser du jour almost a decade ago, but I've had just enough instability problems with a fairly recent Spectre laptop that this sort of story means I'm out. What an absurdly anti consumer company.
