There's so much fear in the fediverse about bad admins/mods, and honestly it's no different to the days where we had forums with bad admins/mods.

The problem is that largely for the past decade people have been in walled gardens either never thinking of moderation, or actively needing to work against moderation to exist.

And you didn't have a choice, because you were locked into that provider & their moderation policies.

@thisismissem The second forum I administered for years came into existence because of crappy admin decisions on a different forum we were all on. I guess this sort of fracturing is uncommon for people whose entire Internet experience is centralization.

The problem with preloading games is they inevitably have a day 1 patch, so you're never able to just sit down and play

Look at all of the people on Mastodon hand-waving genocide. I need to be very offline for a while, I think. It makes me sick.

This sucks. If you have a connected car, anything made recently, and you're remotely interested in #privacy you're going to want to read this.

https://www.theregister.com/2023/09/06/mozilla_vehicle_data_privacy/

Or keep that older, disconnected car running for as long as you can? It's immeasurably sad that after spending a fortune on a car, you're still somehow the product and being monetized. And, of course, my kids will almost certainly never know anything different. They've been born into connected cars and this privacy nightmare.

No amount of tinkering with background and battery settings still allow a @somafm feed to play for more than a couple of minutes when the screen is off, on my Samsung S22ultra. I've tried the main Android app, the web player in Firefox, and the pls file in VLC.

Am I doing something wrong? It seems to be fine (official app) when using Android Auto in my car.

My wife needs bells in again, so I blow the dust off my account. I have 99k in my wallet; modest, but enough to start trading turnips. On a whim I check the bank... 8 million. 😀

Anyway, that's me in for 2 million at 107 per turnip.

I'm really struggling with folks who don't use either a headset or a good microphone for calls. Cheap laptop mics crush sound and don't cope as well with echo. I've got the volume up so high it can hurt my ears sometimes but I still can't make everyone out clearly.

Is there any way to read the variables of a #React app running in the browser from the console? I'm trying to debug something but can't actually run the code locally, I can only access the web app itself.

I have the React Developer Tools extension install, if that helps.

I know Google is becoming a joke, but I just searched for "CKeditor table scope" on #Bing and about two thirds of the way down the screen it gave me shopping results for Walmart and other local stores.

@tehstu@hachyderm.io avatar

When you mouse hover on a specific result in #Bing , the card zooms slightly and during the transition the text is really blurry. It's fine when the animation stops.

This is on my work laptop, so I've no idea if drivers are up to date.

Hello @Mojeek! Apropos of, oh I don't know, everything relying on Bing being busted today, could you please help me understand the Search Selections?

I went hunting for a way to make Mojeek my default Firefox search and noticed that section in the settings, which had Brave, Ecosia, and Startpage checked by default. I read the linked blurb but didn't understand it.

#Windows has had this long standing bug where a File Explorer is suddenly opened and focused. I think this happened on Win8.1, but certainly Win10. At one point, I assumed my Surface Pro 3 was registering phantom touch input where File Explorer happened to be on the taskbar. However, I was standing away from my work laptop (recent Dell running Win11, no touchscreen) and it happened again.

I'd trawl through the Insiders Hub to look for it, but surely other people have seen and reported this.

I see Microsoft re-orged AI into its own division. It'll be easier to dump when this all goes sideways.

Just caught the April 1 episode of The Daily Show. Jon Stewart interviewed Lina Khan, FTC chair.

Watch it if you can, really interesting.

After 2 ish years, I just went to report my first post. As I went through the motions, I realized this was going to my server's mods, because it asked which rule of ours it broke.

Is there a way to report it to the user's server? I assume they're the ones who would take action.

As you are literally shopping on Amazon UK, if you click reject all cookies in the popup it actually signs you out. Presumably as a sort of petty fuck you. Every other site who presented a reject all simply rejected the optional cookies that do all the tracking and analytics stuff, not the functional cookie to keep you authenticated.

Sigh.

Humble Bundle just emailed me this. A huge collection of @pluralistic ebooks for just $18!

Don't forget to customize the percentage sliders, Humble don't send nearly as much to charity/author by default these days.

I was trying to find a Linux program to handle CSV files.

Then I was trying to find one that handled CSV files with more than a million rows.

Then I was trying to find a program that wouldn't be so sluggish handling 2.5 million rows.

Then I decided this was daft and need to reduce my data set.
