Managed Apple IDs & Federation: A Talk from MacAD

This year's talk track is all about the Federated Managed Apple ID. The strongest and best use-case for Managed Apple IDs in Business & Education is focused around User Enrollment of devices. User Enrollment is an incredibly powerful technology for businesses to adopt, and it requires a Managed Apple ID. User Enrollment is a privacy-preserving enrollment type that can be used by companies on devices they don't own.

AirPort Utility was discontinued years ago. It only worked with Apple’s base stations. It does not scan a network in a useful way. Some fact checking when referring people to software would be very useful. https://wapo.st/3wHyd0P There are third-party Wi-Fi network scanners that are very helpful.

tbridge,
@tbridge@theinternet.social avatar

@glennf begging pardon, friend, AirPort Utility on iOS can scan for nearby networks, including networks not broadcasting an SSID.

tbridge,
@tbridge@theinternet.social avatar

@glennf A lot of these devices broadcast their own SSIDs -- either as setup, or for ongoing configuration -- and that's what lets you see where they are from AirPort Utility.

@tbridge@theinternet.social avatar

@glennf @donw I will say I took that article with a bucket of kosher, but you can find hidden shit that way if it’s setup a certain way.

Your. Mouse. Driver.

Yeet that shit into the sun so hard.

Thank You For Everything, Charles

For eight years, I’ve spent almost every Sunday night with Charles. Of the 363 episodes of the Mac Admins Podcast recorded, I think it’s possible he’s been on more than I have. In fact, it was really his idea. We were walking into the pub at the speakers’ hotel in London for the first MacAD.UK, and he said it out of the clear blue sky, “Hey, we should do a podcast!

Woof. Feeling a lot of feelings about the bridge collapse this morning.

Wrote up a whole bunch of notes for the show we record tomorrow (AKA, my weekly therapy session!).

Lotta thoughts swirling around.

😐

tbridge,
@tbridge@theinternet.social avatar

@davemark "I don't have a therapist, I have a podcast" is an oddly prescient and true statement I heard from @Verso this week.

(I now have a therapist to go with my podcast.)

No matter what you think of the DOJ's suit against Apple, there are a number of things that Apple could've done over the years to prevent it from ever getting to this state.

Their refusal to do so was dogged, determined, and baffling.

davemark, to piracy
@davemark@mastodon.social avatar

Curious about your views on piracy:

  • OK to share your Netflix password with your family? Friend?
  • OK to use a VPN to watch a game that is blacked out in your area?
  • OK to use a VPN to bypass licenses, say, to watch content in another country?

Any and all thoughts...

tbridge,
@tbridge@theinternet.social avatar

@davemark Piracy is a market force.

tbridge,
@tbridge@theinternet.social avatar

@davemark I’m saying the more restrictions you place on your content as a way of seeking rent on it, and the more onerous those restrictions are, the more likely people are to turn to piracy to consume it anyway, and then you get nothing for your trouble.

Especially since piracy is a fairly low risk activity.

The enshittification of journalism and news is so infuriating.

So frustrated today. Just heard from our benefits people that the drug I take to lose weight, reduce cardiac risk, increase mobility, decrease depression, will remain uncovered by my insurance next year.

Without insurance, it’s $1102 per 4 weeks. That’s $14,328 I’m spending to be healthier that doesn’t count against my deductible. Out of pocket. All alone.

I’m so mad.

tbridge,
@tbridge@theinternet.social avatar

Insurance would pay a quarter mil plus for my knee replacement. More if I had a heart attack. I’m taking these steps that are working because I want to be healthier and for the first time ever I’ve found something that works.

But I get to pay for it. Instead of my insurance through my employer.

In 2019, I had one round-trip to Portland.
In 2020 and 2021, I flew 0 miles. Barely left the Seattle area.
In November 2022, I flew to Europe for a lovely two-week trip with my 18 y.o. (who had already been on the road five weeks!)
This year, I just cracked 5 round-trips, 12 flights, and 40,000 miles an earned MVP on Alaska.
By this progression, next year, I will visit the moon.

tbridge,
@tbridge@theinternet.social avatar

@glennf We'll see! I was not looking forward to moving airlines, but Alaskan did have some sweet transfer arrangements...
