Just watched the pilot for The X-Files, and have some thoughts. 1) Cinematography looked better back then. Log encoding of media shot with digital cameras was a blessing and a gigantic curse. 2) I miss self-contained, not serialized episodes. 3) Gillian Anderson was and is great. (But I fear finding out something terrible exists about her that I just haven’t heard yet. Please don’t tell me if there is!)

@MattMerk Watch "Ripley" on Netflix. As brilliant cinematography as you'll see anywhere.

First dream of my mom since her death in December. I was talking to my sister in front of a bar when I saw Mom in a cab in one of her exuberant red outfits. She jumped out and shouted, "I'm so glad to see you kids!" But when I looked at her face under her hood, there was just empty space and stars.

If you think Kristi Noem tripling down and changing her story about why she had to execute her puppy is blatantly sociopathic, wait till you hear what the GOP has planned for trans folks, women seeking abortions, and librarians.

Not going to include a link, because a blatant BS artist like Ross Douthat doesn't deserve the traffic. But he's so shamelessly dishonest that he has to pretend that hardly anyone loves Taylor Swift's #TTPD so he can lecture her, at tedious old-man length, about "exhausting" her fans. Why the NYTimes expends valuable column space on this pissy, bilious, always-wrong fraud is a mystery to me. He's the 21st Century equivalent of the forgotten assholes who dismissed the Beatles as a passing fad.

John Roberts' legacy is being Chief Justice of the most freakishly corrupt and anti-American SCOTUS in history. Even if he lives to be 100, the first paragraph of Roberts' obituary has already been written. [cartoon by Bill Bramhall]

One fun thing about Republicans like Kristi Noem is that they redefine stuff like shooting puppies as "politically incorrect," rather than as blatant, soul-chilling sociopathy, so no one screams at one of Noem's ralllies, "GET THAT WOMAN AWAY FROM MY BABY! THERE'S SOMETHING TERRIBLY WRONG WITH HER!"

One of the most chillingly inaccurate statements I've ever read: "She quietly and peacefully committed suicide to escape the ravages to her brain brought on by Asperger's." - Burt Bacharach and Angie Dickinson to the press after daughter Nikki's death in 2012. I never knew this horrible story. https://allthatsinteresting.com/lea-nikki-bacharach

Let's play "Pretend Democracy," where we pretend it's OK that this terrorist isn't in prison for helping to organize a coup and we pretend it's OK that her flamingly corrupt husband won't even recuse himself from the case. So fun!

The American Revolution was fought to throw off the oppressive yoke of a monarch. Now the four "originalists" on the Supreme Court want to reverse that to elevate the most dangerous criminal in US history to the status of a king. #Ripley on Netflix is amazing. Don't bail after just the first installment, which seems uninteresting, but you see if differently later. Jaw-dropping B&W photography throughout. Plays on the old homophobic trope of gay people being creepy in movies in a fascinating way.

One thing social media has taught me, at age 67, is how many parents go through the inconceivable agony of losing a child, and also, how many children go through the agony of losing parents in difficult ways (like me). Social media is basically the Buddhist parable of the mustard seed writ large. https://www.turningwheel.org.uk/buddhist_stories/kisa-gotami-and-the-mustard-seed/

@stevesilberman Hi Steve, regarding your FB post about not knowing Taylor Swift’s music: As a fellow longtime Deadhead who shares many of your extended musical tastes (and an admirer of your wonderful “Neurotribes” and that amazing essay on “Nardis”), I would like to recommend “one possible Taylor Swift starter-kit”, which I wrote a few months ago.

Late-night #jazz: A young French vibes player I stumbled on, Alexis Valet , just released a new album called "Following the Sun." If you like straight ahead, melodic, but very, very hip and fresh jazz, this is the kind of album I didn't think they made anymore. https://youtu.be/C7OMy7ROI9o?si=zZZ0MKWboeGgcvsB
