My 10yo says she likes manga now. She's read Animal Crossing, Delicious in Dungeon, and Chi's Sweet Home. I don't really know much about manga. What would be some age-appropriate content for her? She tends to like fantasy and having a strong female protagonist, and stuff that's a bit goofy.

@mdmrn pretty sure A1 has already happened a few times. Shockingly A3 could still happen (and now that the Bills are out, I think a Lions super bowl win would be awesome and hilarious--almost as funny as a Bills win would be at this point!)

I have been playing the switch remasters on the commute this month. Such a nice game to play in small bites!

Nearing the end of I Am Setsuna and Ikenfell. Two dramatically different games fitting various vibes and moods.

I’ve really enjoyed both journeys but… what is next? Am I ready for an epic like Person 5 or go retro with Chained Echoes? Maybe go Pokémon style with Cassette Beasts???

Ugh!!! My cup runneth over.

@mdmrn Hard to believe that about Flacco (which my phone autocorrects to "Flaccid") but apparently it's true!

I think the Bills v Steelers is going to really depend on weather. If it's still snowing and 70+ gusts, that'll turn this into just runs and the Bills aren't too great on both sides of the ball there.

When I think back on games that made a big impression, I can almost feel the time when I first played it. Just seeing a screenshot of Halflife transports me to summer 2003 and my red Microsoft Trackball mouse; seeing a Game Gear pulls me back to sitting in a car at night during my first road trip; a spring breeze blowing a curtain reminds me of that time I faked sick in high school to binge Mega Man Legends.

Makes me wonder if where you play a game affects how much you like it. #retrogaming

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I was turned off from it 20+ years ago by the voice acting and anime art (which was new to me). I never thought about going back to it, but it gets so much glowing love that I've been convinced to try again.

First, I'm just disappointed in the past year. 2023 was a mess. I'll just leave it at that.

Second, let's talk about manga cancellations because, I take it personally even though it's not. Sure, I get some of them, but Ginka and Gluna was ramping up to be such an amazing series only to be uncerimoniously cancelled. What a disappointment.

@mdmrn in disappointed in my microwave. I already hate microwaves--they are awkward to fit in any kitchen I've ever had, and they beep about everything. Mine died yesterday, right before a holiday where I expect to have a bunch of leftovers. The part that died was a touch panel, and even if I replace it myself the part was almost the cost of the microwave.

@OutofPrintArchive @Dr_Ubertrout I don't think you're alone. TP (and SS and the DS Zelda games) seem to have had redemption arcs as time passes.

I find articles from this period really interesting, because there is such interest and optimism in the Wii from mainstream gaming. Reading this and remember how the motion controls over promised a bit and how people preferred the GC version is fun.

@OutofPrintArchive this is actually the only Animal Crossing I've played much. Started it in 2022 while waiting in the summer camp pick up line. This game (along with DQIX) feel kinda empty and lonely without multiplayer. It's not clear how much these games needed community around them until it's not there, I suppose.

@OutofPrintArchive there's quite a few factual inaccuracies in this, and the random quibs (e.g. Kirby Air Ride is boring) are a bit off-putting. I feel like we do better in general with dives into gaming history now. Maybe we have more access to information now or maybe we just take it more seriously. Probably a bit of both.

@nutjob4life you can disable this by putting analytics: false in your ls.config.json. Unfortunately it's not a global setting so you need to do this in every dir.

#vgmwednesday has the theme of #eightbitbangers this week. I submit to you "Save the World" by Nobou Uematsu from Final Fantasy Legend 2 / SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu.

The track is used to great effect in the game. The final boss first cycles through the normal boss track, and then the normal battle theme. It isn't until the boss unleashes it's ultimate attack that Save the World starts to play (at the 3:00 mark in the video). It's a great example of music enhancing a story.

@mrpablington @Azurakumo still playing #SaGaScarletGrace I can't seem to stop. Not sure how close I'm getting to the end either. It has a really addictive "just one more event" loop, but it helps that the gameplay itself is just so good and keeps throwing novel stuff at you.

What's a good horror movie for a 10yo? She's seen Signs and Jurassic Park and was unphased. She keeps asking to watch a "real horror movie", so not spooky stuff (Adams Family, Nightmare before Christmas, Hocus Pocus, etc). I want something with actual scares, but not something that will cause trauma.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds @Klumpmeister I found got easier the further I got, once I had more tools available. The combat is almost perfect. I tried playing after this and had a lot of issues because combat was missing a lot of what I liked about V. My only major gripe with V is that the story was nonsense to me. There were too many cut scenes and too much talking. I would have preferred a more minimalist approach.
