OK! We've enabled manual updates from Thunderbird 102 to Thunderbird 115.

macOS and Windows users:
Click the App Menu (≡) > Help > About Thunderbird. You should see a prompt to update to version 115.

NOTE #1: If you're not currently using the final Thunderbird 102 release, you'll first get updated to Thunderbird 102.15.0.

NOTE #2: As always, Linux distros dictate their own update schedule, so your mileage may vary.

sbb,

@thunderbird A hard-earned lesson about 115:
before upgrading to it, disable or perhaps even completely uninstall the Cardbook Add-on, if you had it installed in your previous version. It will conflict with the new DAV powers which Tbird 115 has built into it's Addressbook.
It (Cardbook's continued interference) caused serious account/password problems for me, for an entire Nextcloud account I had been using as a Addressbook source. Conflicting overlapping logins, it seems.

sbb,

@pixelfed Gee, I wonder if Instragram will notice all this exporting and do a rug-pull on it. Like within a few days? Maybe a week? I hope it doesn't happen, but the incentive is really obvious; to rug-pull.

Various #Buddhist Monk's quarters in very remote forest locations in #SriLanka.

These are not movie props; real monks actually spend time meditating in these dwellings. The bars on the windows are to keep out wild animals, such as monkeys, tigers, etc.

what helps people get comfortable on the command line? https://jvns.ca/blog/2023/08/08/what-helps-people-get-comfortable-on-the-command-line-/

Would love more stories of things that helped you in the last ~5 years!

(as usual, no need to reply if you don’t remember, or if you’ve been using the command line comfortably for 15 years — this question isn’t for you :) )

sbb,

@b0rk I would say to noobs:

Have a Raspberry Pi 4 or 400 to play around and learn, with more than one MicroSD card - they're cheap. Copy one MicroSD card to another using their homemade GUI-based backup utility within Raspberry Pi OS (Called "SD Card Copier") - can be run from a live system. When offered, yes, check that checkbox to assign unique UUID's on the destination.

Very straightforward, and works great.

"Getting rid of physical books because we now have databases is like getting rid of sunshine because of the existence of vitamin-D pills and cod liver oil." --love that.

a plea for keeping physical libraries available. (but it is key to remember that all living library collections include materials that come and also go)

https://scottlocklin.wordpress.com/2023/07/28/death-of-the-physical-library/

sbb,

@brewsterkahle I'm in #Malaysia, and paper books get musty and moldy quite fast here, unless you run an air conditioner regularly, which also dehumidifies. #Libraries with paper books are great in the drier, more temperate parts of the world. There is a tropical style of book - the "ola leaf" book, which will last many centuries in the tropics, but they are smaller, harder to create, and usually reserved only for religious texts. Flash storage is a big deal here to make #ebooks widely available.

An enormously useful piece of informal research. Some folks will disregard this for the same reason they disregard why some people use Macs instead of Linux, and whatever. But if Mastodon wants to be an accessible network, these are all problems to solve. #Technology https://erinkissane.com/mastodon-is-easy-and-fun-except-when-it-isnt?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

sbb,

@ben In response to "they were confused or put off by the difficulty of the cross-server following process as secondary reasons" - this is a big stumbling point. There's a #Firefox plugin which, when provided with their #Mastodon user account, makes cross-server-following a 2-click procedure:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mastodon-simplified-federation/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=search
Note: FF restart req'd after install, acct cfg
👌
These simplifications which turn "Level 3" tasks into Level 2 or 1 tasks mean a lot to Mastodon growing:

Everyone, I have an idea:

We should create a global holiday:

Backup Day. Everyone gets a day off to stay at home and make sure that all important files are backed up. At the end of the day you have a family dinner and share a scary data loss story to scare the kids

Edit: as some have pointed out, there already is a Backup Day! It is March 31st so I expect no less then a large celebration on @fosstodon next year. Happy Backup day everyone! :omya_aws:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Backup_Day

sbb,

@sotneStatue I wish to propose a stipulation: the entire backup procedure must take less then 40 minutes total, in order for you to even so much as mention the specific method to your family.
Backup procedures taking longer that are fine - you just aren't allowed to mention/explain them to the others, as they are too cumbersome for group consideration.

#Buddhism doesn't teach being a sponge of abuse & tolerating it:
From AN 9.6:
"If one knows of a person: ‘When I associate with this person, unwholesome qualities increase in me & wholesome qualities decline ... the goal of the ascetic life ... does not reach fulfillment by development for me,’ in that case, having reflected, one should depart from that person after taking leave of him. One should not continue to follow him"

We are to watch how we are changed by others, then avoid if necessary.

I sincerely hope Threads follows through with their plan to federate. It will give other Fediverse users a controlled pipeline to the zeitgeist.

By judiciously following Threaders here we’ll be able to have safe access to the people, news, and brands we could never convince to use Mastodon without having to submerse ourselves into the massive, undifferentiated flood of info over there.

This is a good thing, yes?

sbb,

@leo I think / will come up with subtle ways to abuse to inflict a slow torture on existing / /etc admins - drawing them into supporting Threads' quirky implementation of it. Like did to . This now-established playbook manouvre is way too juicy to pass up using again.

Then once this "drift" from the consistency in ActivityPub compliance is set - like a disease - then Threads will stop supporting ActivityPub, adding insult to injury.

There is no shame in posting the same thing repeatedly or boosting your own posts. On Mastodon it's the necessity, different people are awake during different hours.

sbb,

@rolle "Masterbootion" is when you boost your own post. You are the master of your own posts, and you're boosting them.

sbb, to Matrix

I took a look at (with the client), wondering if I could use my own chat room there instead of a Mattermost server, that I use for Talk questions and feedback in my Dhamma Talk livestream videos:
https://bhikkhu.ca/video_dhamma_talks/
While Schildichat was very Discord-esque, my sense was that it's still overly fiddly; I wouldn't suggest it to anyone except a geek.

Matrix definitely blew away IRC, & I think all geeks worth their salt should eschew for Matrix.

sbb,

@symfonystation @phpc @dansup I am very impressed with Laravel having seen how fast it is in the Heimdall web start page webapp. Have deployed it for an org I'm part of.

sbb,

@phpc @dansup These sophisticated new federated webapps all show a lot of promise, but the packaging tends to be the sort, that a seasoned sysadmin/devop would be wary of.

Without clean, careful packaging, these are not the sort of servers that one just simply installs & then forgets (as it will just auto-update itself safely, right?)

No matter how impressive the user-facing features are, I remain chilled & proceed straight to looking up - how well-packaged is this? If poorly, then I'll wait.

Your deeply held, scolding earnestness will undoubtedly be recognized and rewarded after the revolution.

sbb,

@mattblaze The 1st revolution, sure, but all bets are off when the second wave of revolutionaries can and quite possibly will come along fairly soon afterwards. I felt this principle was well-illustrated in the movie "Burnt by the Sun":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnt_by_the_Sun
The book 1984 also has this theme; please refer to the scene where the old guard, who drinks together at a pub, is well-beaten-up.

@SecureOwl A fellow owl. Awesome!🦉

I've introduced KeepassXC to several peers, but it's usually too hard for them to stick with in a disciplined way longer term, even though I feel it's done virtually everything it could to be convenient.
🙄
And that's not even enterprise-grade (as in, multiuser), but is rather just a single-user desktop app.
