if i ran a university founded by intellectuals who left traditional universities in protest of their conformist tendencies and limitations on academic freedom, i simply wouldn’t call the cops to arrest a bunch of my students that pay through the nose to attend https://abcnews.go.com/US/live-updates/college-protests-israel-palestine-war/?id=109734946

i have determined that i simply attract german shitposts. i am like catnip for confused recommendation algorithms. between that spotify discover weekly thing and this, i have no other way to explain why i keep getting 3D animations with german text to speech.

tbh they should just repurpose the android lawn sculpture land as a mock cemetery for their killed products. https://9to5google.com/2024/04/30/google-needs-a-more-formalized-way-to-kill-products/

I’ve just kind of ignored passkeys because they seem opaque, onerous, and coupled. It is not obvious why I want authentication to be magical instead of explicit and knowable. It is not obvious why I should change the foundation of my threat model for my digital identity that has never failed in 25 years. As far as I can tell, the introduction of passkeys just made me click more cancel boxes when logging into websites. Bound to be a little sour on them.

@rooster @kyle Speaking from personal experience, my dad uses the same password everywhere — throwaway accounts, banks, etc. Try as I might, I cannot get the man to use the 1Password family account I am paying for. I don't think he will ever use Passkeys. I, on the other hand, have super long random passwords with MFA.

I’m the more likely party to use Passkeys, but I am not the beneficiary. The people who would benefit from them are the same people who refuse to use anything beyond "hunter2".

sometimes its interesting to go into best buy to see what computers “normal” people are buying.

making a slick Svelte app is fun and all on my M1 Pro but how much do i need to optimize my stuff for the majority of people using whatever $500 gets you from HP.

we, as product makers, get swept up in the latest, shiniest thing & set our assumptions accordingly.

of all the big tech companies, amazon has far and away the worst and most hostile UX. constant upsells, dark patterns, total roach motel trying to delete your account or unsubscribe from prime, the app is clunky, recommendations are awful, visual design is cluttered.

lots of weird oversights while looking for a family member in the holocaust victim database. two highlights:

  1. I, personally, would not design a system that assigns ID numbers to jewish people.

  2. Who the fuck added Disqus in the record detail view. Who is expected to smash that thumbs up button on the death record for my great uncle

FREE DESIGN CONSULTATION for this flow:

[iOS in-app alert]

“Are you enjoying this app?”

[Yes / No]

Yes -> prompt user for App Store review

No -> take user to in-app form asking why they don’t like the app

My suggestion:

  1. don’t do this
  2. if you’re going to anyway, make the very first option on the “No” form be auto-selected and it says “I actually like the app, I just didn’t want to say ‘yes’ and be taken to fill out a review at the moment you asked because I’m busy”
samhenrigold,
@samhenrigold@hachyderm.io avatar

@jimniels third option if space permits on the initial alert: “It’s fine I guess; go away and don’t ask again”

A couple people have PM’d me asking how I did the screen recordings on iOS 6. Strap in. 🧵

Preamble: QuickTime recording was added in iOS 8, on-device capture in iOS 11. Prior to that, there was no official way to screen record.

My iPod is jailbroken, so I first looked at tweaks. They ranged from lost media, paid but the payment server was broken, or produced terrible quality. I tried a VNC server but I got roughly two frames/second.

after restoring iOS a SECOND time, I installed an HTTP proxy to see what was going on. Set a breakpoint for every time it calls to any Apple server. Sure enough, upon connecting the adapter it fetches this XML file: http://mesu.apple.com/assets/com_apple_MobileAsset_MobileAccessoryUpdate_haywire/com_apple_MobileAsset_MobileAccessoryUpdate_haywire.xml

That has to be the culprit. So I edit the hosts file on the iPod to block mesu.apple.com, test everything out, and it works like a charm. Connected the Elgato to a PC since the Mac doesn’t like it, and here we are. The most bootleg setup.

samhenrigold,
@samhenrigold@hachyderm.io avatar

I made a screen recording playing with the iPhoto app so I could take clips from it later. Here’s that very, very long screen recording: https://youtube.com/watch?v=DYob_OpOFu0

The YouTube compression isn’t even that bad here, the raw output just isn’t exceptional (see the still frame). Oh well.

samhenrigold,
@samhenrigold@hachyderm.io avatar

So, just to recap, for the BEST possible iOS 6 screen recording:
0. Ideally, use a 30-pin retina device since the 30-pin adapter doesn’t have the compression issue.

  1. Buy a Lightning AV adapter, capture card.
  2. Add mesu to the device’s hosts file
  3. Use Windows + the Elgato software to record.
