About by PCalc for visionOS is now available!

Perhaps the most pointless app on Vision Pro, but still quite fun to play with. This is a complete remake of the original PCalc About screen in VR. It's basically me experimenting with what's possible today with RealityKit, over-engineering things as usual, and then for some inexplicable reason actually shipping it. I hope you enjoy it!

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/about-by-pcalc/id1613982997?platform=vision

Hundreds of objects swirl around a PCalc icon.
A lovely view of the public transport options in the PCalc About screen.
A distant dragon watches over the city.

Over the weekend I released Widget Timer 3.1 which adds background audio support for timers (hopefully it works ok!) and also Drag n Drop support for UIColor, eg from Pastel by @stroughtonsmith

All the amazing visionOS apps we've seen are pretty much 1:1 Microsoft's Hololens demos from 2016, but backed by a real OS, SDK and ecosystem. No smoke and mirrors, no 'concepts’, no 'Contoso’. Apple doesn't have to fake it.

Execution is everything.

@stroughtonsmith nice find, I forgot about this vid. Crazy even the pinch gestures seem the same... yet Apple made it feel "new"

@jsq interesting price point at $2. imo you can go $10, its low enough that anyone that wishes to support you will pay that.

Suppose the pay what you want data will answer that...

    $2 seems to de-value it a bit

@jsq i'm surprised that the API allows apps to get suggestions, rather than push suggestions

No, Apple, a well thought-out minimalistic pomodoro app from an indie developer is not spam. It provides users with a choice. Stop insulting developers, Apple.

https://breaks.app by @zachwaugh was rejected by Apple as spam because the App Store already contains pomodoro apps with similar concepts. The App Store also contained quite a few journaling apps before you launched your Journal app yesterday, Apple.

Sometimes, I wonder if I've made a huge mistake by tackling a giant rewrite of my 10-year-old ObjC/UIKit app in Swift/SwiftUI that'll probably end up costing me ~1.5 years of development time.

Then I try to do ANYTHING with ANY new API in the old codebase from Objective-C and UIKit.

It quickly becomes apparent that this rewrite was not much of a choice — it's a necessity.

    rixantos,
    @rixantos@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment I just spent 3.5 hours re-writing ONE ObjC class in Swift.

I wondered many times if it was necessary... and concluded it was if I want to keep developing with sanity.

My dad's home was destroyed by a massive flood in the city where I grew up and where he currently lives. It’s the worst flood in over 100 years, and he lost almost all of his possessions, including the equipment he uses for work. I'm trying to help him out as much as I can, so all of my income in the following months will be going towards helping him. Am I crazy for building my own tiny observation framework with Swift macros?

My motivation has been to build a framework that's type-safe, designed for UIKit-based apps, automatically handles deallocation of observations, and which supports iOS 14. In fact, this goes all the way back to iOS 12.

The same code but with the macros expanded.

Wanna start off your week with a fun little programming brain teaser:

How would you calculate the rotation angle for the minute and hour hand of a clock?

Superficially this seemed like a straightforward problem to solve, but after lot of challenging thinking and dead-end solutions I think I found the right way. This came up because the hands in Widgetsmith's clock widgets now can animate between times in iOS17. Which led to a variety of edge cases.

    My solution: https://www.david-smith.org/blog/2023/11/06/design-notes-46/

A grey clock is shown with hands moving smoothly around the watch face. The digital time is shown below.

Apple's whole App Store model, which defines a huge chunk of the modern world, relies on a chain of trust and safety based on individuals internal to Apple, with no external oversight. What happens when a future Apple CEO, or head of App Store, decides to act inappropriately, anticompetitively, or maliciously, or to put in place structures that disadvantage some developers in favor of others (or Apple)? This is why regulation and external accountability is essential
