reconbot, to Redis
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

I have built beautiful things on top of #Redis Iā€™ve used the majority of its features in production. Iā€™ve sat through sales meetings with redis labs. In my estimation (colored by my needs at the time) they have a paltry feature set on top of core. They are a hosting company whoā€™s hijacked an open source project and funneled money into it to try and solve bigger problems.

Iā€™m still processing but this severance from the community is probably one of the best things that could happen long term.

reconbot, to Redis
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

Was #Redis labs not profitable? Was AWS that big of a threat? Did the mind virus of Hashi Corp wanting to push their needs above the communities somehow convince Redis Labs they had to do the same thing to survive?

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

Aws can sure fund a redis team. Cutting them off from the open source contributions by destroying said contributions feel so weird. All of it is greed.

Now we donā€™t get to have nice things without a lot of people, stepping up to make a sense of this mess. Without developing new contributors to take the place ofthe ones RL hired. The cracks of our open source and corporate relationships are growing.

CacheRevolt pitching BSD over GPL feels like people accepting a pay raise instead of forming a union. Even if I agree with the reasoning.

@rauschma@fosstodon.org avatar

1/ #TypeScript: Common approach for validating untyped dataā€”e.g. Zod: https://2ality.com/2020/06/validating-data-typescript.html
ā€“ Encode type via runtime data (ā€œschemaā€).
ā€“ Schema is converted to static type for type-checking.

New approachā€”Typia. https://typia.io/docs/setup/
ā€“ Compile static type to (runtime) validation code.
ā€“ Downside: Tools donā€™t work that strip out types and run result.

Rust does latter approach well. For TS, I prefer former.

@rauschma I love zod and found https://valibot.dev which is zod but functional instead of chaining (and smaller bundle size?)

It's probably a net benefit but async/await killed promise chaining and sometimes it is really intuitive and beautiful.

I think it's because .then isn't a horrible pipeline operator and It lets you treat errors like data instead of exceptions.

Compliance is the root of all evil. So, you want to destroy the SSD? Drill all SSDs. Destroyed finally. All data is safe. Letā€™s go home.

The SSDs:

@nixCraft ahh thatā€™s why they shred

Those that have met me in person in the last two years know that I cannot stop talking about it, and how happy I am with my new super power.

Yes, I posted that myself:

@GottaLaff yeah that would help actually

@GottaLaff ā€œplease donā€™t sell our country to foreign interest by giving a criminal a chance to run for president againā€ probably misses some nuance

Execa scripts are cool af https://github.com/sindresorhus/execa/blob/HEAD/docs/scripts.md

It abuses template functions to make shit like this work

await $echo foo

I love it!

Finally I found a good use case for the return value of yield statement in a JS generator: a very tiny bit-stream parser: https://gist.github.com/indutny/d7ad488cb8ba3264df9c270b711c46ed

I might be able to write a sufficiently simple DEFLATE parser with this without too much pain!

What do you think?

Am I right Iā€™m assuming that these constant tech #layoffs are;

  • new; I donā€™t remember two happening in a year and now itā€™s every week
  • cash grabs; as a way to bump the stock
  • anti union; this summer it seemed like organized tech labor was an inevitable thing and now everyone seems really conservative and fearful

It feels like oligarchs throwing their weight around reminding us whoā€™s boss.
