When I was traveling around SE Asia I had a game I played with myself: if I meet a W or N European person, how soon before they tell me ‘food here is unhealthy because I don’t get to eat plain yogurt and raw vegetables’?

Very often, it was.. immediately lol

I mean, imagine saying that in the tropics, in a part of the world with almost no dairy industry

A bit like me dying of a lack of chillies there I guess

quantsini,
@quantsini@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte I had a parent gawk at me offering mild chili crisp (fly by jing brand) to their kid and they had a clutched pearl moment saying that condiment is too advanced for kids.

meanwhile my cousin is feeding bits of extra mala-y mapo tofu to her son

All the places I’ve gone bike camping. Get on a bike in SF and ride north! Can’t wait to start bike camping again!

I was in Seattle visiting friends and on the way back we impromptu wanted to visit Mt. Rainer. I had realized that the moon phase was new and the galaxy core would still be visible so I got my camera out and took this in a random part of the park. This remains to be one of the cleanest photo of the galaxy core I've gotten so far.

Vintage car photos are really popular especially with film folk, but I think vintage bikes are cooler.

Another from the archives (but re-edited). This was taken in 2019. @SutroTower is one of my favorite things to photograph in the city; especially when the clouds are rolling in over all the buildings!

Did you know it’s possible to photograph the Milky Way galaxy in San Francisco? Go to land’s end on a clear night and point your camera oceanward!

Looking back at old photos I feel like I've been lucky to have taken some in the right place and right time. These photos are kind of like core memories and a reminder of why I love photographing the bay area. Apparently the first like 50 photos are blurry photos of my cat.
Also what the hell adobe for losing the original .NEFs for these :(

Sutro tower circa 2018 popping out of dense fog back illuminated by a sunset.
Golden gate bridge glows brightly in dusk seemingly vanishing into the fog.

What's the most random camera you have?

This is mine: https://elekm.net/rollei/qz/start.htm

@skinnylatte I have this Kodak Autographic jr no. 1a that I originally got as a prop for a roaring 20s themed wedding. I found someone who made 3d printed adapters to allow it to shoot 120mm film (from 116 film, which isn't made anymore) and the shutter still worked and I was able to take some great black and white photos at the wedding!

@skinnylatte love the hassie! I need to start using mine more often now that I got my 40mm fixed!

One thing I love about medium format film is 12 photos seems like the right amount of photos I want to take. I feel like 35mm is a little overwhelming since I feel compelled to take 36+ photos, or it'll sit in my drawer for weeks, months, or even years.

Here's a scan of the film I developed in a plant-based developer I made (spices, buckwheat, a lot of sleepy time tea.. some random plants I picked)

First time doing alternative processing! Pretty cool! Will write about it.

(Nikon FE, Ilford FP4, developed in home-brewed plant-based developer)

I don’t think I’ll ever appreciate a single photo of a gas station

quantsini,
@quantsini@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte who needs gas stations when one can photograph bus stops! Especially muni stops that are lit for the cinestill 800t ppl

skinnylatte, (edited ) to BelieveInFilm
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

Sometimes people say film is ‘purer’ because what you saw is what you got but: every scan of a color negative has been lightly edited to someone’s taste. I got into developing and scanning my own stuff to have more control over what I like (I prefer flatter colors, maybe coz I grew up shooting Fuji Superia and Reala vs Kodak films)

quantsini,
@quantsini@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte my lukewarm take is disagreeing with people who say "show me the non-edited straight out of camera version" because there is some opinionated editing going on whether by film choice, dodge and burning, digital edits, or a phone auto-hdr'ing and applying a filter/ai denoising. even the lens choice can "edit' the photo (e.g. swirly bokeh or cool shaped lens flares)

skinnylatte, to food
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

If you buy a firm tofu that’s of good enough quality (in SF, I recommend Wo Chong, Morinaga, Pulmuone for Chinese / Japanese / Korean versions respectively) you can just add a good soy sauce (literally anything except La Choy), sesame oil (I recommend Kadoya), white pepper and spring onions and it’ll be perfect enough to eat cold without cooking.

Where to get them: Wo Chong (most grocery stores but their Chinatown shop is great), Nijiya, Woori market

@skinnylatte yes! I also love their soups. This is one of the few places where I'd get their tomato and egg soup, a thing I don't normally order

Things I thought I’d commonly replace when I started riding a bike: brake pads, bearings, maybe bar tape/grips
Things I actually replace more commonly: pants
