A local bakery makes some tasty bread, so I wanted to check if they have stores in my home town. Their website, https://tkzd.hr, has some of the worst performance that I’ve seen in years. The time to first byte is over 7 seconds. And it’s such a small website, less than 1 MB transferred in total. Must be some crappy shared hosting.

Anyway, I emailed their board to tell them about the problem with the website. Maybe they’ll fix it.

edit: Shouldn’t it be called time to first bit?

puresick,

@simevidas In that case it might even be “time to first bite”

> Bei "LEGO Masters" wird getüftelt, gebaut und gestaunt, wenn die Kandidat:innen beweisen wollen, dass sie echte Klemmbaustein-Künstler:innen sind.

So :innen made it into the German language? It’s grammatically correct? I’m out of the loop.

puresick,

@simevidas It is not correct technically, but it is allowed/accepted as special form of using special characters for this purpose.

Hey Nintendo fans 👋.

I made something which might be of interest for you:

🧑‍🔧✨ Plumber's Delight, a weekly newsletter all about the world of Nintendo: http://plumbersdelight.email

I am reading a lot about gaming and Nintendo every day so I decided to pour the most interesting things I come across into a publication.

If newsletters are not your thing, you can also read each issue at http://plumbersdelight.email/archive and even subscribe via RSS to it.

Boosts are appreciated! 😍

I did not try it out yet (on a computer) but this sounds wild, especially running purely on the client:

”free-music-demixer | Open-Unmix (UMX-L) running client-side in the browser with WebAssembly”

"TeleSign verifies over five billion unique phone numbers per month, representing half of the world’s mobile users."

WTF

"While there are some situations where personal data can be used for security purposes without consent, the secret use of telecommunication data on the majority of all global mobile phone users is not in line with EU and national data protection law."

👍

You want to finally understand how these path commands in SVGs work?

Good and easy to understand interactive demo showing how they work.

[News / Eggstra Work]

The results for this weekend's shift have been announced. Here's what you needed to get:

  • basic steelhead sticker - participation
  • bronze steelhead sticker - 143+ eggs
  • silver steelhead sticker - 178+ eggs
  • gold steelhead sticker - 217+ eggs

Let us know what you got in the replies below, I'll be interested to see how well you all did (personally, I got like around 130 eggs, but I was playing with random players).

puresick,

@splatoon @splatoon I got 137, which felt quiet good but wow these numbers 😅

puresick, to Typeface

Anyone interested in a new typeface?

For more than a year now I am working on my first own typeface in my freetime and just recently finished a first usable version of it.
While still unfinished, let me present it to you nevertheless:

DH Volltext, a serif typeface made for body text.

https://volltext.hnnng.space

It is free to download (SIL Open Font License 1.1). I would be happy and grateful for any feedback on it. :) Boosts are also welcome.

puresick,

@ronanmcd Thank you 🙏

puresick,

@olavf Cool, that is nice to hear! What's the URL of your blog (if you are willing to share)? :)

puresick,

@olavf @olav Yeah WP can be finicky sometimes! But your blog looks great!

Glad to hear you like the kerning. That was (and is) something I struggled the most with not knowing for sure if it is good enough.

Can you share a screenshot showing an example of the numbers being wonky?

iOS 17 Automatically Removes Tracking Parameters From URLs in Safari Private Browser, Messages, and Mail https://www.macrumors.com/2023/06/17/safari-link-tracking-protection/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

puresick,

@macrumors @jensimmons

That is a great feature to see coming to iOS Safari, but it should be enabled for all browsing by default. Most people will probably never touch this setting. :(

In what situations does a website need to know the visitor’s OS version on desktop (Windows 11 vs. Windows 10, macOS 12 vs. macOS 11, etc.)?

puresick,

@simevidas There is one real life example I worked on where this is useful which is using WebCodecs (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/WebCodecs_API). By knowing the OS you can assume that certain codecs are installed on certain operation systems to support this API.

Other than that, I only saw that information being used solely for tracking and profiling people. :(

I don’t know how much browser vendors care about accessibility, but evidently not enough to add pause controls to animated GIFs.

puresick,

@simevidas maybe @jensimmons has some information about this?
