Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:

White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.

They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.

  1. Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage

  2. Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.

1/n

@mekkaokereke while not necessarily publicly I was heartened that when someone posted 'anti DEI' rederic they got shut down quick with fantastic responses. The whole thread got deleted which fair enough, but I made sure to give those reponders positive feedback through official channels (that their managers see).

TRANS FEM FRIENDS: What do you wish you could say to the person you were before transition who thought it was impossible to ever actually be a girl or be fem?

I sometimes think back and find myself at a loss at what would have supported that girl best. She was so sad, hopeless, and often dissociated or in fight/flight/freeze/fawn over her distress with how she felt like she couldn't fit in the world. And like, I know "it gets better" or "it really is possible" wouldn't have gotten through.

I talk to a lot of young trans folks who go through this still every day, and so would appreciate others thoughts on this!

pixellight,
@pixellight@pony.social avatar

@JoscelynTransient For me, "it really is possible" might have been enough. Or more specifically "everything you fantasize about while laying in bed is possible, and not just some sort of facade, actually possible"

Edit (check my profile for more up-to-date info)

If you are still a CuriosityStream subscriber, be aware that they are currently mass-emailing subscribers with what I think is a VERY deceptive "offer". They push users to renew 2yr subs, promising continued Nebula access for bundle subscribers. In reality, Nebula access for CS subscribers expires on Dec 31st. This means you'll have <2 months of Nebula out of your "locked in" 2 year contract. All their communication seems to imply the opposite.

@Techaltar I signed up to curiosity stream for one of those get nebula for free deals and they never gave me access to nebula. Canceled and haven't touched them since.

My crankiest opinion: I hate apps.

Most apps are just clingy bitches. They want to collect too much info, they take up too much space, they want to notify you of trivial bullshit. Most apps should just be websites.

@trochee I develop apps for a living and... yeah I agree with this stop trying to push me to your silly unnecessary app

@danirabbit huh, I would have sworn I looked this up before ages ago and found out the direction didn't matter. But I've always done it clockwise 😹

Guy who invented the clock: there will be 12 numbers on it

Friend: so the day will be divided into 12 segments?

Inventor: no, 24

Friend: so will the day start at 1 Inventor: the day will start at the 12, which is at night

Friend:

Inventor: the 6 means 30

EDIT: Note that 360° is divisible by 12 and 60, and the first clocks were sun dials. Of course the format makes perfect sense, and we're only pretending it sounds ridiculous because funny.

Seen reports of a study going around that purports a '54% reduction in carbon footprint for working from home'. Instead of going off the headline I highly recommend reading the study itself for a more interesting an nuanced picture. It's short and easy to read https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.2304099120

My takeaways are:

Information and communication technology usage is negligible. I've seen a lot being made about zoom carbon usage for example, and while I think data center energy usage is important to look at it's pretty minor for this.

So the biggest impacts are transportation and building energy use. It seems that hybrid is actually the hardest model to optimize for. People tend to live further away increasing commutes and energy cost for an office doesn't change a whole lot based on how many people are there.

So their recommendations fall into 2 categories:

  • for transportation, they suggest promoting public transit, car sharing, electric cars
  • for energy use, they suggest improving building energy efficiency, downsizing offices, and sharing seats.

They really underline that work from home needs to be combined with other sustainable practices. If we all move out to the suburbs and drive around more it can offset the benefits.

Working Remotely Can More Than Halve an Office Employee’s Carbon Footprint - https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/working-remotely-can-more-than-halve-an-office-employees-carbon-footprint/

pixellight,
@pixellight@pony.social avatar

@lauren despite the headline I appreciate how nuanced the article is. It shows just one thing like working from home isn't going to solve the problem, it's going to take a whole lot of big and little things to tackle climate change

The best part about the new #Unity fees is they are tracking it with their own 'proprietary technology' which means they can charge you anything they want and there's no way to dispute it.

So, #anime folks, why ISN'T there anything else out there like Madoka Magica?

I get that it's kind of the penultimate Magical Girl But REAL anime, but it's bizarre that it's almost the only thing like that. You'd expect it to inspire an entire genre, like happened to isekai, but nothing?
