Users of #btrfs in #PostmarketOS now get a sweet, flat subvol layout by default 🎉

Thanks @ollieparanoid for reviewing :)

Combined with the packages apk-snap 📸 and #mangr0ve 🌴 available on #AlpineLinux's edge channel testing repo, you get automatic snapshots of / when apk installs, removes or upgrades packages; as well as a nice tool for rolling back to a previous snapshot if something goes wrong 😄

Does anyone know of a (very) low-profile UVC module with USB-C connection?
I want the quick-and-hacky way to usable cameras on my device.
If there's a fitting camera, I could design and 3D print a phone cover to accomodate it. Just pop it on your phone and you're off to the races. Take photos and videos, without needing to implement driver support for the internal camera of your device first.

It's a hack, but it would let more people daily drive a phone

My first week of daily driving pmOS edge, or: "Having your dogfood and eating it too"

Intro

I got a Oneplus 6 2.5 years ago, to play around with Linux on mobile. My other phone, an old Android, partially broke its screen last fall. The writing was on the wall, as the cracks crept ever further. Last week it was no longer usable, as the screen began sensing touch inputs erratically, without being touched.

1/x

papiris,

In my opinion btrfs is a better filesystem for the 'portable device' usecase than #ext4 is. Data integrity and easy recovery of b0rked systems is so nice.

3/8

papiris,

Pros I've experienced

  • Call, text, mobile data, wifi, auto rotate, auto brightness, browser activities, writing notes, email, OTP, podcast and radio listening, manga reading, peertube and youtube watching, mastodon; all work more or less. These are functions I use daily.
  • Impressive battery life, especially when suspended.
  • Freedom to do what I want with my device.
  • Privacy from megacorps and others.
  • Immense feeling of achievement.
  • Clout.

4/8

papiris,

Papercuts

  • Couldn't log into any public services, because the government-sanctioned OTP app won't run in waydroid. Called the bank and they were understanding enough to mail me an OTP hardware dongle. Should arrive next week. Problem solved.

5/8

papiris,
  • Couldn't use my super-cheap youth public transport card at first. Transport provider insisted I install their app, I insisted that wasn't an option. I don't want to use Waydroid if I can help it, due to battery and functionality concerns. Also Linux-only dogfood is yum. Had to dig info about an obscure webshop out of the public transport provider, where my youth card was luckily listed. Problem solved.

6/8

papiris,
  • Camera on the #Oneplus6 doesn't work yet. I love documenting my day in photos, saving and sharing them with my family. I feel the loss.

  • #Flare (the Signal Messenger on Linux app) has only partial support for being the main Signal client, i.e. without being connected to an Android phone. Buut the mode is experimental and difficult to enable. There's a workaround using signal-cli, but signal-cli in #AlpineLinux is only built for x86_64. (for now)

7/8

papiris,
  • Phone doesn't ring the alarm unless it's awake. i.e. doesn't do the job of an alarm clock in the morning.

  • The screen sometimes becomes corrupted, like there's an issue with the driver. Restart fixes it, and so does forcing the gpu to redraw different images to the screen for a while. For some reason more likely to occur when the device is exposed to cold environment

Summary

I'm pleasantly surprised that the papercuts seem small. See ya'll next week!

Someone posted a $1000 bounty for working sdm845 camera support in the PostmarketOS #lemmy community!

Not sure how the project handles bug bounties, but if it's legit I'm optimistic. Have you seen this, @craftyguy ?

My first patches to were accepted 🙌 (ty @ollieparanoid!)

Now we have a basic subvol layout by default in , and when comes online again, I'll send a new patch with more comprehensive subvolume handling 🌠

Mirror of my changes here, if someone'd like to try it out in the meantime :)

Porting #snap_pac from #ArchLinux to #AlpineLinux these days.

Goal is automatic snapshots in #PostmarketOS, with automatic rollback if something goes awry.
This increases resistance to b0rking for all devices supporting #btrfs, and makes it more feasible to use a phone running #pmOS edge on the daily.

It's basically my first time packaging, so I appreciate input :blobfoxdealwithitfingerguns:

There’s a really nice feature of the official Mastodon app on iOS: every time you vote in a poll, the app crashes.

For those of us receiving email in multiple languages, it would be awesome to have #Firefox Translate built in to Thunderbird. No sending your sensitive conversations to a corporate cloud, just a lean translation service running locally.

We've decided to make it a development priority for Q1 2024!

You'll be able to track the progress via this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1823007

But as always, we'll also keep you posted right here.

In their book “The Dawn of Everything,” David Graeber and David Wengrow provide multiple accounts by early European settler colonists of the indigenous societies they encountered in the woodlands of northeastern North America.

Over and over, these Europeans noted that these societies were well and truly stateless, lacking rulers, laws, courts, police, prisons, or anything like what they were used to in Europe.

They quote one Jesuit, writing in 1644 about the Wendat:

“I do not believe that there is any people on earth freer than they, and less able to allow the subjection of their wills to any power whatever – so much so that Fathers here have no control over their children, or Captains over their subjects, or the Laws of the country over any of them, except in so far as each is pleased to submit to them. There is no punishment which is inflicted on the guilty, and no criminal who is not sure that his life and property are in no danger…”

Thinking of starting a 'tech for good' type org, I've run limited companies before but not 'by guarantee' - what are the advantages of doing that? I've read up a lot and still don't really understand. You can't pay shareholders profits so they have to be spent on the org's activities? That part sounds good

papiris,

@joelanman
I've been thinking of the same thing; specifically tech for good in the agricultural sector. This sector is rife with coops, so that's interesting...but I don't want us to be personally liable if things go bust

I've got an Nvidia hybrid graphics laptop, and have been running regular and atomic versions of Fedora KDE on it for the past four years. The pipewire change was...painful. As was wayland for SDDM. Nvidia+wayland was/is...

Though for the past year I've found myself almost only using the wayland session.
I'm sure dropping Xorg for F40, and the Plasma 6 change in general will be painful as well. But I like the Fedora principle of 'First'. It was a big reason I didn't go with Debian.

The markdown support can break some messages with a different layout. But the most problematic point comes from German speakers where different genders are separated by ending a word with a colon or an asterisk which results in a Markdown format.

What should we do in your opinion? Thank you.

papiris,

@apps
Would be nice if MD would 'just work', also with German stuff.
Alternatively make MD optional, possibly on by default for all but German users

Some cyclists are mental.

I just saw one guy shout aggressively at a taxi parked in the cycling lane, then the same road rule enforcing cyclist passed through a red traffic light and across a zebra crossing at the end of the street.

These are the cyclists that give cyclists a bad rep. Just chill out.

papiris,

@matt
Kinda offtopic, but is there a max length, width or height to what can legally be considered a bicycle?
Can we make a massive multi-tandem bike and just go to town, or do we at some point cross the line into 'car' territory?

papiris,

@matt
Wow, yeah that's what I had in mind.
I can't seem to find anything about their legal status in Norway though
