I continue to believe Zigbee delivers on the important things that Matter and Thread keep promising, but actually:

• mature
• widely available
• affordable

The one thing Matter over Thread devices can claim is that they work without a hub… except they don’t; the hub still has to be built into your Nest display, Apple HomePod, etc.

I have hundreds of low power, local-only smart devices from a dozen or so brands and it all… just works together.

Last week my , my first computer and still one of my favourite retrocomputers fell on the floor from a shelf. The 40-year old ABS case is brittle and broke right on top of the user and cassette ports. The Run Stop key also fell off 😩

The keyboard with the missing key, the Run Stop.
The key with the broken plunger in my hand.

Just cruised through a reddit post about a guy who explained how his daughter went to an Ivy League College debt free.

I cruise through these reddit posts about finance because I have no education in personal finance. Like having the $1000 emergency fund. That seems like a good idea.

Anyway, the title explains it like his daughter did all the work, but my take was, her parents had money and enough financial knowledge to start saving when she was born.

Urbanhedgelady,
@Urbanhedgelady@mastodon.world avatar

Okay let's break this down as I understood. When the daughter was born the parents opened a 529 account. I'm 43 and today years old when I heard of this.

They opened the account with $1000 and deposited $50 a week into it. The OP actually said it meant one less Starbucks and one less lunch out. When the daughter got monetary gifts for birthdays or Christmas they took half the money and put it into the 529 and the other half the girl got to spend.

Urbanhedgelady,
@Urbanhedgelady@mastodon.world avatar

In High School the girl got a dual credit and graduated HS with an AA. In my opinion, wow, congrats. That's awesome. Then she got her bachelor's degree by taking online courses, living at home rent free, OP says this, and applying for scholarships.

The daughter is apparently taking a year off to save for her master's degree working a government job, but she still has enough in her 529 to pay for half of it.

Urbanhedgelady,
@Urbanhedgelady@mastodon.world avatar

So let's back up a bit. The OP stated that they were financially stable enough in 2004 for his wife to be a full time stay at home mom, but did take part time substitute teaching jobs occasionally. OP had a government job. This all screams privilege to me. And I want to point out this guy's post was paragraphs long.

Urbanhedgelady,
@Urbanhedgelady@mastodon.world avatar

In 2004, I was 23. I had a 3 year old and a 1 year old. I was making $9.50 an hour at Sam's Club. I'd worked there for 2 years. My husband also worked at Sam's Club, he made $10 an hour. Our apartment rent was $475 in 2004. We brought home $1600 a month, COMBINED after taxes, but doesn't include 401k or health insurance. Our rent was more than 1/3 of our monthly income. Then we had utilities, car insurance, gas, groceries, and two kids in diapers.

Urbanhedgelady,
@Urbanhedgelady@mastodon.world avatar

Don't get me wrong I tried to open penny savers accounts for my kids but we never had a savings more than a couple hundred. We never went on vacation and I sure as hell wasn't getting Starbucks or eating out. We never had new cars, new clothes, or cable TV. It seemed that something always happened to use all our savings, medical bills, car repairs, etc.

(In this appeal to Congress, over 35 artists, activists, and scholars call for US funding to defend #Ukraine.)

Together we call upon #Congress to do the right thing.

Ukrainians are fighting for their existence. On territory that Russia occupies, it tortures Ukrainian citizens, kidnaps Ukrainian children and murders Ukrainian leaders. On territory Russia can reach with its weapons, it strikes civilians and rescue workers.

Russian leaders say openly that their goal is the destruction of the Ukrainian state and the elimination of Ukrainians as a people. Russian propagandists threaten genocide almost every day. Right now, #Russia is using missiles and glide bombs to destroy the ancient and beautiful city of Kharkiv, once home to 1.5 million people, just as Russia destroyed Mariupol, Aleppo and Grozny.

Ukrainians are also fighting for our safety and for everyone’s freedom. By resisting Russian dictatorship, they show that democracy can defend itself. By defending their borders, they are protecting the international order and holding off chaos. By fighting alone, they protect Europe. By showing how hard offensive operations are, Ukrainians make a Chinese war in the Pacific less likely.

YusufToropov,

By fighting a conventional war against a nuclear power, they are making nuclear proliferation and nuclear war less likely.

The Ukrainian armed forces are defending basic American interests. They are doing things that Americans cannot do for themselves. By absorbing the entire n attack, they are making other wars in Europe impossible. They deter China without in any way provoking Beijing.

#THREAD #UkraineWar #PassUkraineAidNow #Congress #Ukraine #Russia

By showing that a nuclear power can be resisted, they teach other countries that they need not build nuclear weapons. For two years, Ukrainians have protected us as well as their own people.

Most Americans understand this, and want to help Ukraine. And most elected representatives do, too.

But we are letting the Ukrainians down.

#THREAD #UkraineWar #PassUkraineAidNow #Congress #Ukraine #Russia

It has been more than 470 days since Congress passed legislation to support Ukraine. That is most of the time since Russia invaded in February 2022. During the period of our inaction, Russia has reconstituted its army. It is preparing a new offensive, testing Ukraine across the front and illegally using CS gas to drive Ukrainian soldiers from their trenches.

6/xx

YusufToropov,
@YusufToropov@toot.community avatar

If Russia breaks through, this will be our fault. And then we will understand what we have lost. Everything that Ukraine is doing for us can be reversed. If Ukraine is defeated, we will find ourselves in a far more dangerous world. It will be a world where we can expect war in Europe and war in Asia. A world in which Russia can cut off the food to the Near East and Africa that Ukraine now supplies.
