Anyone shopping a laptop today LOL?
Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo all dropping laptops.
I think I want to go with an Asus or a Surface laptop. I don't think I'm going to go Surface Pro.
Starting prices on X Elite coming in around $1299. X Plus around $999.
Literally the LEAST exciting part of this is talking up all the AI stuff. Instead, Windows Laptops are about to get a LOT more powerful while using a LOT less battery.
Now I just need to see what company is using which "flavor" of Qualcomm chip before I pull the trigger on one...
I'm very pleasantly surprised by their support as the representative kept in contact for a few months and the bug has been resolved just a few days ago. The bug being Linux specific is just the cherry on the top.
It could be something specific to business models compared to consumer ones. Nevertheless the interaction was a breath of fresh air
Something I hear a lot is "why are kids wasting time learning algebra in school?"
I feel I use algebra quite a bit in my work. I've had to solve for the fourth proportional in many different contexts over the years, both in my earlier film work, and now in programs.
Just tonight algebra came into play when I had to find the correct scaling for printing some book covers.
@nantucketebooks maths for problem solving skills, literature for communications. Most other subjects in school are enhancing one of these two.
Maths is unambiguous in its feedback (until you reach sufficiently high level at least) and you can drill the technique of breaking down a problem to manageable parts for years on end.
If someone says maths in schools is wasted time, the point has been missed completely. Something, something, missing the forest for the tree 😄
I'm reviewing an inexpensive laptop from one of those super low cost budget PC brands, and yeah, the frame is generic, and the screen is just "good", and the sides are a bit creaky, but damned if I don't love how easy it is to pop open.
10 standard screws and I can replace almost everything on the inside of this thing...
I'm really happy when I can make even small donations to project I like to use 😃
This time I'm giving a bit to @gentoo , @postmarketOS , @blenderartists , @godotengine 🙂
As a long time ARMv7/aarch64 Linux user, I totally forgot that things in #Linux x86_64 land can be quite cursed, too.
My new AliExpress-sourced P8 Intel N100-powered 8" mini-laptop re-educated me in how difficult some hardware can be.
I only managed to boot Ubuntu and Fedora installers successfully and went with Silverblue (instead of NixOS). I now have an Intel device that boots up with screen sideways and uses Software Rendering 🫣️ (1/2)
@linmob hoooh, Alder Lake... Anything from the low-end range Intel provides is hell.
The Atom ones from old (Nokia Booklet 3G for example) are doubly so with their PowerVR GPU.
Even Chromebooks are super cursed. Gemini Lake Chromebook with apparently everything working - no brightness control and I haven't figured out even how to get any debug info out of the thing 😑
Hmm, #thinkpad with AMD seem to have the tendency to spontaneously trigger a power button event. I've seen this on #fedora and #gentoo so far but can't find more information as of where the issue stems from. Any ideas what would be a good place to discuss this?
Lenovo's premium support rep was good and knew his stuff but looks like he can't really help or ask for such a task in their current support system. There is no official Linux support for the model and the issue appears to be firmware induced.
Any #fedora peeps that may know some Lenovo engineers to lend a hand? :D
@cassidy is that Samsung CB Pro?
I wonder how the stylus fares on it with Fedora :)
The 3:2 ratio is awesome! It's a shame this model and it's arm sister "kevin" never reached EU shores
@cassidy I have my doubts for pressure sensitivity. An Acer CB Spin 311 with wacom stylus at home is in this state. But as convenient pointer - more than good enough👍
Can someone help solve this mystery..
Why do some people put their mobile phone on loud speaker and walk around holding it in front of their face having a conversation instead of using the normal speaker and holding it against their ear? This has puzzled me for years.
@tonybaloney the mic works better when you are close to the phone with loudspeaker mode - hence the pizza stance.
The loudspeaker part - to be able to put it aside (search on the laptop/pc or make a note?) without interrupting the conversation.
@tonybaloney using it alone in a room is how you pickup the habit 😆 And with all the audio processing of modern smartphones (like you have for videos to enhance/ clear speech) and voila!
@gamingonlinux yeah, the engine that is pushed heavily in schools and academia is making anti-consumer moves (no surprise there). Hailing Unity's temporarily backtrack as a win is pure ignorance. Adobe did the same moves, Autodesk made them as well. Didn't turn out well for either market.
But sure only "people who won't use the engine" will "complain".
Being vocal against overreach is not complaining.
Whenever I explain my #research at Google into mobile text editing, I'm usually met with blank stares or a slightly hostile "Everyone can edit text on their phones, right? What's the problem?"
Text editing on mobile isn't ok. It's actually much worse than you think, an invisible problem no one appreciates. I wrote this post so you can understand why it's so important. https://jenson.org/text #UXDesign#UX
@dos@scottjenson@jeremy_data@dcz targeting the underlying wayland input protocols would be great (and hopefully unify the current v2/v3 friction between environments :D ). Wouldn't the zoom/ lens feature require adjustment in the compositor anyway?
There are a few things from the demo which I don't quite understand. The "hard press" for the menu seems to require some level of hardware support?
@cassidy@lutris works beautifully for such purposes. Shoutout to the plethora of individuals who expand the install scripts to include fixes and/or quality of life mods - no disk, ultra-wide display support, etc.
For ripping the disks... I've recently tried to rip Halo 1 (PC) unsuccessfully. If you find a good guide on how to deal with the DRM, do drop a post. It's ridiculous how involved backing up those disks can be because of those protections.
For the next several weeks (and months?) I'm evaluating at least a dozen open source and commercial #email apps.
Now, I'm honestly not saying this because I work at @thunderbird, but the new #Outlook is a buggy mess within the first 5 minutes of use. I'm quite surprised that "Switch to New Outlook" toggle is even there.
My Gmail account requested re-authorization twice, and switching off Focused Inbox completely zapped everything from the message pane, and I can't get it back.
@killyourfm@thunderbird I miss Inbox... 😑 By far it did the best job of keeping me away from the email inbox with everything done efficiently (of course it had to be killed). The ToDo management flow it encouraged was something else.
And yes, it wasn't for everybody nor did it comply with already hardened workflows. Yet it still worked brilliantly
