I've been doing Flatpak builds for various free game projects in my spare time and I'd love to do this for some of their projects, but most of them don't have any license information so I can't get them published on Flathub. It'd be a shame for all their work to just rot away in archived repos :(

@mcc actual fun bit of videogame history: due to the formerly notoriously twitchy age ratings authority in Germany, games publishers would often heavily self-censor their German releases

this resulted in a vibrant and thriving community of "blood patches", which would re-add the removed/edited content while - where possible - keeping the German localization otherwise intact

@mcc obviously there's more than just a bit of overlap with piracy there because this often would have required redistributing assets from the non-German versions of the games

and so there was a lot of binary diff patching stuff going on, or requiring the files of the English language version of the game for the patch to diff and patch asset files on the fly

@mcc so eg. the original Command & Conquer replaced soldiers with "androids" by just recolouring the blood to black and replacing screams, voice barks etc with robot noises

the blood patch would just edit the palette file for unit sprites to change the blood colour back from black to red because that's like a one-byte change, no need for original assets

but if you had the files from an English copy it could also extract the sound effects from that and replace the ones in the German file

@mcc back when No Man's Sky first came out, I bought it on launch and went in expecting Roger Dean Simulator and got pretty much exactly that, but with all the slightly janky videogame stuff bolted to the side I wasn't quite having as nice a time as I would have liked.

And then, a couple of hours in, I lifted off to go to the space station, save and shut down, and would probably have never touched it again EXCEPT just then I flew right into this.

I may have gone "oh fuck" out loud at the TV.

Haßbro geht pleite, und versucht sich durch Verkauf von Dragons und Dungeons an Tencent zu retten.

Die Idee war eigentlich, das an Larian zu verticken. Das sah nach BG3 wie ein schlauer Move aus.

Aber Larian hat nicht genug Asche, und Tencent, die an Larian beteiligt sind, wurden dann von Larian in den Deal gezogen.

Larian ist nicht der schlechteste potentielle Eigner, aber jetzt ist VC in DnD enthalten, Enshittification wird unweigerlich folgen.

so in Paper Mario: Color Splash, one of the dungeons is a volcano, which has a hot spring in it; the entrance to it you can use leads to a hot spring which has a bunch of Toads sitting in a pool

as we know, Toads are all boys, and this gels with Mario using the entrance that leads to that part of the hot spring

BUT if we know how hot springs work in Japan, we also understand that there must be another, FORBIDDEN part

Super Paper Mario:

  • does away with most of the traditional RPG mechanics
  • has a bit where it riffs on RPG grind bits by making you run in a hamster wheel for 10-15 minutes real time
  • has a bit where Peach has to butter up her captor by pretending to like all the same things he does in a personality quiz AND THIS IS A REAL ACTUAL SCREENSHOT FROM THE GAME
