May be small news in general, but it is huge for me — latest update of @organicmaps now has speech-synth street names in navigation mode! Thank you very much to everyone there who worked on merging and testing this feature; whatever helps to check the screen less while driving with guidance is very much appreciated.

Been waiting in a parking lot for a while, and to kill some time I decided to open @organicmaps

Found out that a few places I could see from my car were not mapped, and proceeded to do so.

Feels good, and it's a good alternative to the "infinite scrolling" on social media! 😅

The May 2024 Organic Maps update supports bookmarks and tracks sorting by name, paved paths are white, and unpaved ones are brown. TIL that @organicmaps has a (very WIP, but still) desktop app, and so now I can produce side-by-side comparisons. Voilà the query for "café" in #Toulon

Note also how the information is shown much more explicitly on the OrganicMaps view. The google map only becomes useful to #bike / #pedestrian once you zoom all the way in. Somehow their designers seem to be afraid of contrast or sth. 🤷

I just love how #OSM is so much better, thanks to all involved! 🫶

@organicmaps note that google returned only SIX results here. Out of which one is out of business and one is a duplicate. Which leaves us with four.

@organicmaps returned ~25 results, and while not all of them are strictly-speaking cafés, most of them would be fine to sit down for a coffee, or have an obvious relation like having "Café" in the name.

It's insane that google even fails to find shops like "Columbus Café" which is a french competitor to Starbucks, and which they do know about.

Note also that I as a user can (and do) use this map as a note-taking device: every time I find a shop that I'd like to re-visit, I make sure I have them on the map, incl opening hours and other contacts. @streetcomplete and @everydoor are great tools for this, but @organicmaps also allows doing this straight from the app! 😍

This way, every time I write some of this down for my own use, everyone can profit from it.

@governa I do especially like @organicmaps as my backup mapping application, both for work and the side job. Both often involve going where there's little or no cell signal, so the ability to pre-download sections of map is HUGE. With the current #openstreetmap limitations in my area, it can't always get the fastest route, but so far always gets me there. Plus, it motivates me to get back into #osm to update the #maps and stay active.

I'm terrified that Google Maps routes my home to a lot of places though a prohibited and terribly unsafe turn, despite me asking Google Maps and Google One support to fix that many times, but @organicmaps doesn't. How the one with way more money on the table provides a worse service than the ads-free donation-based open-source alternative?!! :ChikaScared:

@organicmaps has been HUGELY useful for both planning and while away on holiday. I've downloaded maps of where we were going for offline use, so I can navigate without data or wifi. I've used it to find shops, playparks, restaurants, ice cream, and drinking water. With the bookmark feature I can make lists of useful spots ahead of time. I've filed LOTS of bugs in their issue queue because I'm a nitpicker and a magnet for bugs, but it's because I think it's a fantastic app with huge potential!

I've submitted another application for @NGIZero grant for @everydoor. I'm at a point when working a regular job feels like a loss to myself, OSM and OSS world. Looking for funding to focus on my multiple geo-related projects, but that's near impossible. As Guillaume told me at the last SotM, hiring me for what I do is impossible to justify. Mostly because it's not a single super-useful project. Like xz. So... you know, I keep writing good stuff on 4 hours a week I got.

The last editor I wanna mention is Maps.Me editor. I didn't make it all by myself, obviously, we had a brilliant team, and I just helped from sidelines.

It brought a hundred thousand new mappers to OpenStreetMap, although few of them stayed. In my few talks on this I argued it was the future of contributing: millions who don't care about the map, but bring the data.

Maps.Me got bought out, so now I recommend its fork, @organicmaps (pictured). Amazing how they still keep going. Support them.

This one came up yesterday, while preparing for @organicmaps GSoC student work.

When developing an editor, you need to work with OSM Sandbox, a dev copy of API with no data. Sometimes it's frustrating because complex data is where an editor breaks. Usually I downloaded an OSM extract in JOSM, fixed ids, and uploaded it to the Sandbox, but on the 100th time I gave up.

@jmb Same with a trip to Switzerland... For navigation I can recommend @organicmaps, works fully offline. A literal life saver in remote locations without cell service or in these stupid roaming sitiations.
