May be small news in general, but it is huge for me — latest update of @organicmaps now has speech-synth street names in navigation mode! Thank you very much to everyone there who worked on merging and testing this feature; whatever helps to check the screen less while driving with guidance is very much appreciated.
Montividiu, Goiás, Brazil is a mapping challenge:
Google Maps has a lot of roads misnamed, like a bunch of R. das Avencas and two Av. Rio Verde.
Bing Maps is offline at this moment here. @organicmaps's OpenStreetMap do not have any Rua das Avencas in that city (I hope contributors from that city fix that).
I had to look at MapQuest to find the address I was looking for... yet I am not 100% certain that's the correct address.
Going through this excellent book by Shaun Pinner, much recommended! There’s many lessons to learn from this book but from my #infosec angle there are a few. Firstly, always keep an off-line maps app on your phone (I use OsmAnd). As a test — switch on airplane mode and try to survive for a day. Can you still navigate from point A to point B? Secondly, keep your social media profiles friends-only access. Thirdly, don’t keep any passwords in memory - it’s a bad practice from security point of view anyway, but I never thought about the interrogation angle. A password manager locked with biometrics and PIN and random passwords everywhere will prevent you from finding yourself in situation where you’ll be begging your interrogators to check another password because you might have remembered wrong.
TIL that @organicmaps has a (very WIP, but still) desktop app, and so now I can produce side-by-side comparisons. Voilà the query for "café" in #Toulon
Note also how the information is shown much more explicitly on the OrganicMaps view. The google map only becomes useful to #bike / #pedestrian once you zoom all the way in. Somehow their designers seem to be afraid of contrast or sth. 🤷
I just love how #OSM is so much better, thanks to all involved! 🫶
@forteller what is in the OpenStreetMap.org there? Are roads tagged properly? Does osm.org route it right? Can you please create a detailed issue on our Github?
Enjoy traveling, and share a video version of Organic Maps Anthem!
