Great talk by @tante about what he calls "empty innovation". Must-watch if you care about switching away from the current hot mess that we're in called late-stage capitalism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9ksU67EW6I

Blood donation done!

And the usual plea: if you can, please donate! If you are an immigrant in NL, you can do it in English and I'm glad to go with you if you don't want to go alone!

(Also fingers crossed they don't kick me from the donation programme, my ferritin was low last time 😭)

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@vicgrinberg do they also give you free ferretin pills in NL?

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@vicgrinberg ah weird, why don’t they recommend them? My partner also has low ferritin levels and they give her free pills after donating blood here in Germany.

@vicgrinberg interesting, thanks for sharing!

DB ICE 731 Hamburg - Köln

A slowish route because all the infra is old. And it’s a ICE 1 from the 1980s, renovated more than a decade ago

But the ambience on board, the comfort of the seats, are still excellent. It’s like someone actually thought “what would passengers actually appreciate in a train interior?”

It doesn’t feel like packing as many people in as possible was the priority. And that’s so nice 😊

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@jon How can I find out which ICE model the train is? Currently on the ICE 783 Hamburg - Munich

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@jon Verstehe. Aber im Artikel hört es sich so an, als das die verschiedenen Gesellschaften dann bald sich dazu einigen, gegenseitig Tickets zu verkaufen?

🥺 Definitely too much light pollution in Leiden city to see the Aurora - and I'm too chicken to cycle out into the polders/fields on my own at night.

@vicgrinberg same here in Hamburg 🙁

How important is equality?

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@mpjgregoire @evan in more equal societies, consumption and status tends to be less important. So if everyone has enough, people don’t really want more in the first place.

This from the recent Garbageday Newsletter sums up so much of tech discourse in one sentence of a truth bomb:
"You are you in an MLM for people who know what Github is, but don’t know how to use it."

@can@mstdn.social avatar

@tante What’s an MLM?

So, it may feel like I’m harping on a bit about JSR—the tech industry’s latest attempt to ‘fix’ the JavaScript ecosystem—but it kind of bugs me how little discussion there is about it

Like, it’s literally a proposal by a VC-funded startup to coopt existing infrastructure and the only comments I’m seeing online are “ooh, they put a lot of work into making it fast.”

There’s no discussion of what it’s for, whether it tells us anything about npm or how that can be improved.

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@baldur I‘ve written a short post on a very similar topic: VC funded companies trying to own the tools and the deployment infrastructure for programmers so that they can make their investors‘ money back. JSR seems like another step in that direction? https://canolcer.com/post/separation-of-power-for-programming-tools/

pat, to random
@pat@hachyderm.io avatar

So we've got DHH regurgitating (and promoting) transphobic talking points this week, with a history of parroting harmful racist rubbish in the past.

Will we see any Rails Core team members speaking out against this? Any sponsors of RailsWorld? Any founding/board members of the Rails Foundation?

Or is it cowardly silence (or worse, agreement), just like in the past?

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@pat what did he say?

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@lucky @pat shit. Somtimes I hope he just stops going further off the deep end. His business partner Jason Fried seems like a normal fellow, I’m curious if he doesn’t say something to him….

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@glyph @lucky @pat I think banning politics at work is fine as long as it’s not some anti-DEI or similar measure

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@ferrisoxide @lucky @pat DHH has a big influence on Rails, but luckily the community is much much more than him.

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@glyph @lucky @pat I agree. And this might be different in EU where I live vs. US, so I might not understand the issue. But yes, as long as people get their jobs done they can talk about whatever they want. If you are at a point where you need to forbid politics discussions at work, you might have other problems already

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@pat @glyph Of course I agree. But we don’t know what the actual situation at 37 Signals was, therefore I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and not speculate. Maybe this is also wishful thinking on my side, since I like their products and don’t want them to be a shitty company 🤷

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@pat @glyph yes I can imagine that both Fried and DHH have big egos and are hard to work with. And they should obviously have responded differently in that described call. However, the article doesn’t go into the history of the political discussions at work except that list, which is not really a political discussion, rather an immature and bro-ish act, in my opinion. I’m not trying to defend 37 Signal. But yeah, DHH’s anti-DEI stance doesn’t speak for them, does it?

He’s here! The prototype, anyway. He’s big, squishy, and friend-shaped. We’ll try to make him as affordable as possible. You’ll have to wait a couple more months to get one, but we might open pre-orders relatively soon.

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@Gargron If you're looking for a partner to make shipping easier for EU: I run a boutique fulfillment company (based in Hamburg) and we only work with brands that follow some kind of societal or environmental impact. Would love to work with you. Let me know if you want to learn more.

I am not such a CSS purist that I think utility classes have no place in development, but I do find advocating utility-first approaches (never mind the toxic bro culture driven by Tailwind’s CEO) to be a strong signal of being a wanker.

Heydon is more verbose:
https://heydonworks.com/article/what-is-utility-first-css/

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@aardrian I don’t follow the Tailwind CEO - what does he do toxic bro culture-wise?

can,
@can@mstdn.social avatar

@aardrian Ok, thanks. Interesting post btw. I'm not a front-end specialist, but realizing that I have been doing CSS wrong all these years doesn't feel great. Will try to improve my CSS!
