It's ! In 2017 caves from the on the Swabian Jura became UNESCO World Heritage Site. Humanity's earliest portable art was found in those caves. The tiny (3.7 cm) but amazing figure of a woolly mammoth carved in mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago was discovered at the Vogelherd cave.

Rare #Roman enamelled brooch in the shape of a dagger.
Found in the Roman fort at Ehingen-Risstissen (South West Germany), dating 1st century AD.

En vogue around 6,000 years ago: an amazing #Neolithic three-row necklace consisting of more than 500 (!) beads made from limestone and jet.
From Sachsenheim, dating around 4,000 BC.

Two boys have found bones from prehistoric elephants. The animals, which weighed up to 13 tonnes and reached a height of over four metres at the shoulder, lived near Munich around 10 million years ago.

A nearly 6,000-year-old stone axe in an antler sleeve and a wooden handle, found in the #Neolithic lake-dwelling at Hornstaad-Hörnle at Lake Constance. The sleeve absorbed energy from the blow.

A 6,000-year-old necklace with three marble pendants. The beads are made of jet and limestone, which results in a beautiful black and white contrast that is typical of the jewellery of the Neolithic Schussenried culture, which was widespread in southwest Germany.

Located almost 50 meters deep, the study of Illes Formigues II, a Roman wreck from the 1st century BC that sank off the coast in Palamós (Baix Empordà), is not a simple task for archaeologists.

Glass beads were a luxury product in Bronze Age central Europe. These 3,000 year-old bead was found in the pile-dwelling settlement of Hagnau-Burg at Lake Constance. They were probably made in the Alpine foothills from raw glass imported from Italy.

This bronze helmet of the Corinthian type was found in the sanctuary at #Olympia, where large numbers of Corinthian helmets were excavated. Herodotos mentions this type of helmet as part of the equipment of the #Greek hoplites. C6th BC.

An elaborately decorated early
#medieval
double-sided bone comb, found in a warrior's grave in Fridingen (dating early 7th century AD). To protect the delicate tines, the comb was kept in a case. Long and well-groomed hair was a status symbol.

A Sphinx (height 4.8 cm) carved from #ivory and with face made of amber. Found in the Grafenbühl burial near Asperg, a rich burial mound from the late Hallstadt period, dating ca. 500 BC. The Sphinx is a product of a
#Greek workshop in Italy (Taranto?).
It was used as an applique and attached to a piece of furniture.
