Considering to change my #backup solution from #duplicity to #restic (Not sure yet, I like having #pgp keys for encryption, but it's not like a long password stored in #PasswordStore wouldn't cut it). Since restic supports Windows I might try moving a couple relatives onto it; Makes helping them easier if I know the software. For them however, a #GUI is likely a MUST, but what I've found so far is not too encouraging: restatic (dead), npbackup ("metrics" and other assorted niggles), resticguigx (Electron), backrest (browser-based, which makes my skin crawl for security tooling)... Does anyone know other options I missed? Or has some compelling arguments for those I mentioned?

@infobeautiful That can't be right, no picks less than 1 or greater than 100? No #xkcd-peak at 4?

I'm old enough to remember when the "Back" buttons in web browsers used to work reliably. You'd get exactly one page transition back in history for every press of the button.

Can we bring that back, please?

lpwaterhouse,
@lpwaterhouse@ioc.exchange avatar

@leonerd Just disable JavaScript and its ilk and the button works just fine. As a bonus you get a pretty good idea which sites are really in it for "teh metrix" (read: surveillance capitalism) first and foremost... ;-)

I am currently designing a small toy-language and was considering making all strings proper #Unicode objects and all source files utf-8. Lo and behold, Unicode has recently published some guidance: #TR55 http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr55/ I am, however, rather deeply concerned about the general strong preference for #blocklists over #allowlist, e.g. as recommended for identifiers. I get wanting to allow people to use their own language and script wherever possible, and therefore recommending switching from e.g. requiring type names to start with an upper-case character to blocking an initial lower-case character, thereby allowing the use of unicameral (without upper and lower case) scripts. But I have this deep gut-feeling that while the TR certainly solves some existing #vulnerability classes, it also opens up a huge amount of new ones with this general attitude. I haven't yet gone through the TR with a fine-toothed comb to allay that fear, but I'd appreciate input from anyone that has thoughts on the matter.

    Hey network :)
    Can anyone recommend a good online course to get into programming with Python? It's for a complete beginner when it comes to both python and programming who's currently doing a German video course that's not well explained, leaves some of the general programming basics out and uses overall not very good didactics. Hints are appreciated!

    What’s the scariest #film you’ve ever seen?

    For me, it’s “Don’t Look Up” bc while the #movie is supposed to be satire, it’s terrifyingly plausible from my perspective as a former staffer who now studies science policy.

    @Sheril Dr. Strangelove. Hilarious turning into an unexpected gut-punch upon reading Confessions of a Doomsday Planner... @nixCraft chuckle I used to simply say "Das Boot", which was at least a very unusual/distinctive choice at my age then. Today I struggle to name just one favourite, let alone ones that also describe me reasonably well (For books just read the Cryptonomicon, it'll give you a reasonable facsimile of my self-image at least; Other favourite books would require a full-fledged review/critique to go with them). But Movie... Uuuugh... I'll go with... Star Trek VI (pun intendended).

    Watching a mutual ask for printer recs and receive a chorus of tired tech folk going "Just get a Brother, they're fine" and man

    MAN

    Like this is actually kinda fascinating honestly, Brother is now the best printer brand, the one that every Computer Person recommends, and is it because their printers are good? Their printers are fine, they print, whatever, no, it's because everybody else's printers have gotten Innovated out the wazoo, every innovation making them way worse, until it's gotten to the point where I wouldn't have one in the house even if it were free, and meanwhile Brother's have remained consistently Fine I Guess, which now makes them the best printer manufacturer simply by virtue of them opting out of the Who Can Get Crappiest Fastest race

    Brother have gotten to where they are now, by NOT innovating

    EDIT 2023-11-27 2130 UTC: I muted this thread a while back because wew lad this got too big. I won't see your reply but the lurkers (and commentors) of Hacker News might.

    Do my comrades find themselves having deep & significant empathy for others in general, but much less for those closest to them?

    If so, you are not alone.

    Why do we think this is?

    @actuallyautistic

    lpwaterhouse,
    @lpwaterhouse@ioc.exchange avatar

    @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Almost the opposite. I have a lot of empathy plus a willingness to go through hell and high water for my chosen family. For strangers though? While I have strong principles, think Human Rights, or, better, TNG-era Starfleet officer, I don't empathize more than symbolically when someone hits their nail with a hammer (I'll help, because that's the right thing to do, no need to actively decide to, but empathy? no...)

    lpwaterhouse,
    @lpwaterhouse@ioc.exchange avatar

    @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic It might be an interesting data-point: I am a dominant sadist; which kind of implies that even for chosen family I do not "share/feel their pain" in the sense usually meant by "empathy", at least not automatically and all the time.
