I wanna hear about the best concerts you’ve been to! Some of mine:

  • Ozomatli at The Catalyst - played until curfew, spilled out onto the street and jammed for another hour until the cops came
  • Flaming Lips at Liberty Hall - second set, played the entirety of Dark Side
  • Dar Williams at Liberty - power went out, she sat on the edge of the stage and played three songs by flashlight
  • Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlisle, et al at the Gorge - simply magical
keengrasp,

@jacob
looks fun, can I play?

  • REM with Grant Lee Buffalo, Riverfront Coliseum 1995
    -Andrew Bird with Grizzly Bear, MusicNOW fest 2008
    -The Walkmen with Cass McCombs & Pomegranates, The Mad Hatter 2009
    -SO MANY shows at the old Southgate House: Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks with John Vanderslice, Quasi, Animal Collective, Stereolab, the Shivers, Wye Oak...
    Plus very fond memories of opening for Antlers just before Hospice came out, also opened for Jeffrey Lewis & the Junkyard which ruled.

Music is making a comeback...

From the ChartR newsletter:
"The days of checking overplayed CDs for scratches, using a pencil to fix an unspooled tape cassette, or saving up for that state-of-the-art Walkman might seem as alien to contemporary music listeners as gathering around the gramophone, but it’s hard to overstate how much change the music industry has endured in recent decades.

Vinyl’s dominance in the 1970s...was an era of music-listening that is now heavily romanticized... even by Gen Z. But, if necessity is the mother of invention, convenience is surely a close relative, with music lovers keen to take their favorite tracks with them, and 12-inch records offering little in the way of portability. Smaller cassettes became the on-the-go option, only for CDs, offering the same flexibility with better sound quality, to displace the cassette in the 1980s — ushering in the industry’s golden age & eventually accounting for 89% of revenue at its peak in 1999."

@shekinahcancook If "people giving money to Daniel Ek and not to musicians" is a passable semblance of a "music industry" to you, this chart might seem encouraging. One must chart the money the actual musicians are making - not that I begrudge the engineers and art directors and promoters and roadies etc. their income, but it should be a function of musicians' income and not totally unmoored from it - if one wants some actually meaningful or useful stats on the financial health of music.

30,000 Palestinians killed.

— World leaders: “Israel has a right to defend itself.”

7 international aid workers killed.

— World leaders: “ISRAEL HAS GONE TOO FAR!”

If your moral values change depending on the nationality of the victims, you do not have any moral values.

All you have is racism.

@paninid @darnell @seachanger @Dinger @randahl Hamas is less Likud's foil than its pawn.
"Avner Cohen, a former Israeli religious affairs official who worked in Gaza for more than
two decades, told the Wall Street Journal in 2009 that Hamas is 'Israel’s creation.' "
https://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/blowback-how-israel-helped-create-hamas/
Why create a Hamas? Maybe in hope of Oct. 7 type attacks giving Israel a blank check to wipe out the inconvenient Palestinian population once and for all? Bibi's actions seem in accord with such a plan.

As everyone under 40 in infosec tires of the “Hackers” aesthetic plastered on everything by us tedious elder millennials, one thing that I think gets lost, particularly for younger folks, is that the movie isn’t just goofy camp. I mean, obviously, it’s heavily fictionalized, but there really was a hacking subculture kind of like the one depicted in it in New York in the 1990s. I barely grazed the outer periphery of it myself, and I sometimes wonder if anyone did a serious ethnography of it.

    Imagine saying something as dumbfuck ignorant as, "The 90s were nearly bereft of good [music]" and meaning it...

    Yeah, this is in reference to another post but I don't want to get in trouble for calling someone "dumbfuck ignorant" so I'm posting it standalone.

    Look, just because you stopped listening to new music in 1983 doesn't mean good music stopped being made then.

    keengrasp,
    @keengrasp@layer8.space avatar

    @etherdiver Spot on. Also it's just objectively absurd to believe that there isn't vastly more music being made - of every style, in accordance with every imaginable taste - than there was in the 90s when the logistical / financial barriers to making and distributing recordings were so much higher than now. Olds like me might say "I don't know how to find what I want" or "I can't keep up," but "it isn't being made" is just nonsense. It's out there.

    The third time was not a charm for Ohio Republican Jim Jordan, hoping to become House speaker. Twenty-five Republicans voted today against the arch-conservative congressman, while all Democrats cast voice votes for their party’s leader in the chamber, Hakeem Jeffries of New York, meaning no candidate hit the threshold of 217 votes to be elected speaker.
