made so much website today

kayserifserif, to random

website worry-stone people:

how can i feel free to tinker with my website without feeling like it's supposed to be my main public-facing thing and should therefore contain all the proper public-facing things and be well structured and well maintained and not in a constant state of half-brokenness?

kayserifserif, to random

use advent of code to learn rust ?? on one hand it sounds like a fun way to get into a new programming language on the other hand i may get stuck and intimidated and quit so quickly

kayserifserif, to random

i got it. house of leaves is geronimo stilton for new media artists @henry

Hey everyone! See that thing happening with Chrome, where Google seems to be using their de-facto dominance over the mainstream browser environment to try and outlaw user-agent content filtering, AKA ad-blockers?

May I suggest you take a long, hard look at VSCode and GitHub and have a little wonder about those and where they might be heading a few years hence?

kayserifserif,

@selfisekai @cms oh god… thank you both for sharing. how frustrating :(

if you're an infrequent command line user -- what text editor do you use if you need to occasionally edit a file on the command line (other than vim/emacs)?

curious about what people use to edit a git commit message etc

if you picked 'other', I'd love to hear what you do in the replies!

kayserifserif,

@b0rk @BoredomFestival i'm not a huge command line user but i feel like i've always used vim when i needed to edit commit messages (is it default on Mac? not sure) and i've never really tried other things

i know the :wq and the :q! and the i to insert and some basic things like A to start typing at the end of the line and (vim enthusiasts look away NOW) i also use the arrow keys liberally to move around

wow… i think i'm finally starting to understand the data join/enter/exit pattern in

i will promptly forget again when i stop working with it, though

kayserifserif,

unfortunately SVG is so hard to debug, or maybe i don't understand it well enough yet

is it not rendering because the coordinates in the path are wrong? because the fill or stroke is wrong? is the g container affecting it in any way? guhh

kayserifserif,

okay that's not true, i do like that it's a graphic thing that is totally text-based, so i can copy and paste a bit of SVG code and look at it in figma or something

and hypothetically if i read something like this closely enough i could theoretically visualize a simple bit of svg in my head https://css-tricks.com/svg-path-syntax-illustrated-guide/

want to create a bunch of small websites that are enjoyable reinterpretations of big social media platform euphemisms. (in other words:)

bird site (twitter/x) -> a website to share pictures and facts about your favourite birds or birding experiences

orange site (hacker news) -> a website for Wendy Cope's poem "The Orange", which starts, "At lunchtime I bought a huge orange", and ends, "I love you. I'm glad I exist." (i think there are other similarly wonderful orange poems but i can't remember them at the moment)

what other euphemisms are there? :)

HEY LET’S TALK TECH UNIONS 🎉

Join me and @aworkinglibrary next Thursday, October 19 (8pm ET / 5pm PT) for a ✨free online discussion✨ about my new book, YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION.

We’ll discuss some history of organizing in the tech industry, the challenges we face as tech workers, how unions help us address them, and how you can start forming your own union. And bring your own questions — there’ll be time for Q&A.

💖 RSVP here: https://ethanmarcotte.com/booktalk

#YDATUbook #TechUnions #1u

kayserifserif,

@beep @aworkinglibrary this was lovely, thank you both for the wonderful discussion! i especially appreciated getting to think about how the process of organising just serves to underscore how tightly linked we all are, and how much we depend on each other, especially on all tech workers (?) who are not traditionally thought of as tech workers.

kayserifserif,

@alienmelon thank you for this!! I really want to get into making my own little games and this is super useful, with or without the unity debacle :)

kayserifserif, to random

i mean i kind of want to start a blog (i do, i should start a blog, blogs are cool n i should have a blog?)

but i'd like to balance that with practicing mindfulness, and reaching out to friends when i'm craving connection, and journaling and reflecting more with myself privately, and spending more time with my offline hobbies, and avoiding the benign everyday slip into thinking about my life as a source of content.

i suppose it would be useful to start off with intentions for a blog? what specific topics would i find useful and interesting to share or explore publicly; what, if not my private life, do i want to have public conversations about. i don't have to have a blog! but given the opportunity, what would i blog about?

kayserifserif,

@fonts 😳 haha blogging about the concept and practice of blogging?? intriguing… and perhaps just meta and self-indulgent enough to work 😤

On the large AI models, this preprint synthesises what we know so far https://arxiv.org/abs/2209.15259

In short: it is mathematically impossible to have AIs combining the following properties:

  1. High number of parameters
  2. Robustness to poisoning (e.g. fake data)
  3. Privacy-preserving
kayserifserif,

@Mahdi @elmahdi wow… thanks for sharing this example — would you have the time to explain how the Arabic sentences differ here?
