Kind of sad that this is necessary, but those are the times we live in: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/violetblue/the-covid-sanity-handbook

tl;dr -- Violet Blue is creating “The #Covid Sanity Handbook”, a book about how to navigate the turbulent cultural waters around the disease.

Seems likely to be useful for a lot of folks -- spread the word…

#WordWeavers 18: What kind of dragon would your MC be?

The kind who studies for their PPL and instrument flight rating, never flies without an airband scanner, GPS, and transponder, and stays well out of controlled airspace. Also spends a lot of time looking over their shoulder nervously and tries not to fly through clouds in air traffic corridors.

Remember: there are old dragons, and bold dragons, but in the age of 250 ton jet airliners flying at 500 mph there are no old, bold dragons!

A fun, almost nostalgic toy: #Kagi's SmallWeb project is just a page randomizer of little web pages: https://kagi.com/smallweb/

This sort of thing used to be common in the early days of the web. It's generally been drowned out by noise, commercialism, spam and SEO, but it's a fun little way to spend a few minutes.

(And now I'm remembering the days when I could read every webpage when it came online…)

@mpilquist @alexelcu Ooooh, and that led me to Alex’ year-old article on integrating with CE3: https://alexn.org/blog/2023/04/17/integrating-akka-with-cats-effect-3/

That's directly relevant to my life, since I hope someday to bring into the modern age, using CE3 and fs2, and it's 100% based on Akka Cluster Sharding. (Still the number-one use case for Akka.) So that's going to get bookmarked for future reference; thanks!

I periodically post links to YLE (Your Local Epidemiologist), which I’ve long found to be one of the best sources for clear, concise, sensible, measured info about #covid, and about epidemiology more generally.

They could use some more support: https://yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/yle-needs-your-support-d55

If you’ve found their info useful, please consider a donation. Thanks!

Just installed #Joplin, which I'm looking to use as my #Evernote replacement. (Since I don't like the current look of Evernote as a company.) https://joplinapp.org

So far, it looks sweet - full-featured but pretty easy to use, nicely open, good docs, with an official cloud sync that doesn't cost too much and end-to-end encryption.

Just starting out with it, but this may also replace a lot of Google Docs for me…

General request among my local network (primarily folks in MA, definitely only relevant to the US): anybody know a good #NonProfit lawyer that they'd recommend for helping an organization transition to 501(c)3?

I’m dealing with one company that should almost certainly be a formal non-profit, and another that is exploring the idea, and could use an hour or two of consult with someone who knows what they're talking about.

Thanks!

PSA: after vacation, I thought I had a minor head cold.

I was shocked, a week later, when I did a routine test (someone was coming to our house) and found it was #COVID.

No fever, sore throat, or coughing - just a little stuffiness and sneezing.

So please: if you have any symptoms, test. And even if it's negative, wear an N95 or stay home: there's a lot more than covid out there right now. Keep your friends and family safe!

Fine article by @Popehat about Substack: https://popehat.substack.com/p/substack-has-a-nazi-opportunity

As usual, he strikes a pretty nuanced view: on the one hand defending the platform's right to allow Nazis on the platform, and on the other calling them out on their bullshit that this is some sort of high-ground moral choice.

Worth a read…

For the next time you encounter someone going, “#covid is over”: here, have some facts courtesy of YLE -- https://yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/state-of-affairs-dec-19-2023

tl;dr -- covid numbers are bad, and there's decent reason to believe there's rather worse to come (based on what other countries have seen with the JN.1 variant).

RSV numbers are no joke, either.

#trans folks of the fediverse who are in places where being so is illegal need to start sanitizing their fedi presence ASAP. When threads federates they're going to analyze your posts, build a nice little personal profile, and then sell it for pennies. Your government will absolutely spend pennies to know you're trans.

We need to start organizing secure spaces where these sorts of folks can go for community because here won't be safe for too much longer.

jducoeur,
@jducoeur@social.coop avatar

@spaduf @Jonathanglick I mean, my assumption is that it's online, it's publicly accessible, of course it's already been scraped. I'd be downright astonished if, eg, Google hasn't been scraping all feeds for at least the past year. Heck, that doesn't even require any specific intent: I think they scrape everything by default unless prevented.

Hence, I don't think Threads federation matters in that respect. (There are other concerns, but IMO this horse is long since out of the barn.)

I read recently an article about the school system run for service members' children by the US Department of Defense ( https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/10/briefing/defense-department-public-schools.html ) which left me with a bunch of questions, so I tracked down some doc about their curriculum, which I found (at least the part I've read so far) eyebrow raising. Not in a bad sense, but in a "Well THAT is certainly an interesting choice; it is hard to surprise me and you have succeeded, sir" sort of way.

It leaves me with a new question: anybody know how to surface any data that might exist on what the political leanings are of adults who went through this edu system as children? I'd particularly like to find out if there's any comparative study of the political affiliations of adults who went through these DoD schools vs adults who were service members' children but went to ordinary civilian American public schools.

Can anybody help me out?

jducoeur,
@jducoeur@social.coop avatar

@siderea No concrete data for the here and now, but many years ago I was part of the team that built AFAIK the first online project for that school system (a browser-based collaborative multimedia MUD aimed at elementary school age, back in the IE/Netscape 3 days).

We were basically told to do what we thought was pedagogically right, and got no interference about content at all.

(Mind, this was DARPA, so I don't think it got deployed.)

The #Bandcamp mess leaves me thinking -- there is a market opening for a company (or ten) that is:

  • Employee-owned
  • Maybe unionized (not my thing, but a lot of folks care)
  • Not VC-invested (that's important)

Whose focus is all about building non-e14n applications similar to the big names, but with healthier business plans.

Nobody would get rich off of it -- but if you go in knowing that, you could build much healthier companies.

(Yes, Cory Doctorow probably already said this somewhere.)

The Andressen manifesto is the gift that keeps giving because it inspires writing like this.

"The techno-optimist tribe gives off the distinct impression of people who have been so ridiculously rich for so long that they’ve just completely lost the plot about how the real world works. To be fair, this is an apt description of most of Silicon Valley."
