It always makes me smile when I can spot Tulip, the median carpenter ant before I go off to work. She wasn’t up to anything remarkable today. Just ant stuff.

Tulip rests on a rock back legs elevated thorax low in the white sand.
Tulip in comparison to three of her sisters: one is much larger than her, one smaller.
Tulip is groomed by a sister.

A two picture cartoon.

First picture: an alien ship, just landed. A smiling, three-legged alien descends the steps, holding its hands out towards the humans awaiting it. The humans wear business suits, and appear happy to greet the alien

Second picture: the alien walks blissfully past the humans, walks to a tree at the edge of a wood, and hugs the tree. The humans watch in confusion and disappointment.

I had a student who was chewed up by the justice system in NYC— he was in my calc III class at the CC — and he could have gone on to a 4 year school with a scholarship— but that was not to be it’s a very nasty and remorseless system and I have no sympathy for someone who has only seen the concierge in kid gloves version.

Happy . Here's my illustration of Williamsoniella coronata, a bisexual bennettitalean cone from the Middle of Yorkshire, England. This plant had a cone with both male (bright yellow outer) and female (inner cone) sections.

People are afraid of all sorts of outlandish AI apocalypse scenarios, but the only one I'm scared of (besides the massive increase in CO₂ emissions) is the facilitation of mass surveillance. The only thing LLMs are really good at is summarising. The thing that your local conspiracy nut has been afraid of all these years — that everyone is being personally watched at all times — has never before been practical. Now it is.

Not that capitalist exploitation/colonial expansion hasn't always been existential for the majority of the world's population of course.

I’m doing an assembly with the girls today and the ones being left home have just discovered I’ve separated them from their queen and they are NOT happy. Please forgive me little ants, this is for education and will mean so much to the future of ant-human relationships! #namedAnts #tulip #tuliptheant #carpenterAnts

I really need to catch up on my pinning this summer— and I must label that dinomyrmex which was a gift! I don’t want anyone who studied my collection to think they were among the ants I kept— or endemic to NYC. Such magnificent big ants! And they are gentle giants, you could hold them.

overall, a great Q and A episode. Interesting to hear @dave_hone 's view that pterosaur flightlessness probably evolved on volcanic islands, of which there is unlikely to be any record of, so many scores of millions of years later, since volcanic islands don't last long.

It’s not that expensive to have your own labels made to replace those in your clothes so you have your own secret bespoke brand.

(it’s a remarkable how much this simple detail makes me happy.)

friends the brain is...

llewelly,
@llewelly@sauropods.win avatar

@gay_ornithischians
essentially all software is written in programming languages designed by humans, and most of them with the intention that other humans are meant to understand them. Even the few deliberately pathological exceptions, like brainfuck, are still founded in human assumptions about how programmers think.

The design of software systems is expressed in code that other humans are meant to read and modify, and that is not remotely true of the human mind.

llewelly,
@llewelly@sauropods.win avatar

@gay_ornithischians
animal brains do not seem especially similar to the digital electrical computers that humans build and design. However - certain mathematical rules associated with computer science, such as the halting problem, are actually far more general in what systems they apply to; they don't just apply to modern digital electrical computers, and they most likely apply to animal brains.

apophis,
@apophis@brain.worm.pink avatar

@gay_ornithischians no regrets or reservations whatsoever about my "something else" vote this time round

even if i forcibly ignore the fact that i'd read @llewelly's reply first there's no way to install or overwrite anything

a brain doesn't just sit there until you give it a mind so that it can do things, the brain is just there and its ordinary function produces mind

if something like the human mind is software then so is the shape of a candle flame or the motion of a car
