On Monday morning we (Mozilla) detected a very large crash spike affecting #Firefox users on Linux, specifically on an older version of a Debian-based distribution.

It turned out to be an interesting bug involving the #Linux kernel and #Google JavaScript code so let me tell you about it.

A thread 🧵

@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

The crash started apparently out-of-the-blue, hitting thousands of Argentinian users on a Debian-based distro called Huayra, and specifically on version 5 which was based on Debian 10.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1839139

Everybody seemed to crash while searching for images on Google. All versions of Firefox - even very old ones - were affected suggesting that the change didn't happen on our side, but on Google's. 2/6

I thought Musk challenging Zuck to a cage match was a new level of absurd. But wait! From a dank, Romanian prison, an alleged rapist and human trafficker just had to weigh in.

Wherever I look I can see news about a few very rich individuals being stranded on a submarine that was supposed to take them on a tour of the Titanic. The effort put in place to rescue them appears huge in scope.

Last week over six hundred people died in a #shripweck off the coasts of #Greece and nobody cared. Nobody even bothered to start a rescue operation until it was too late.

Stop pretending people are equal, I hate this hypocrisy.

gabrielesvelto,
@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

Also I refuse to call them immigrants. These are people, human beings.

It's like being called an expat just because you're a wealthy immigrant. I'm not an expat, I'm an immigrant myself, just one that happens to be rich enough to be accepted without a peep.

People literally hide behind the word expat because immigrant is placeholder for poor, and we live in a world that frowns upon poverty as if it were a crime, not a condition deliberately imposed on people.

@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

@Barredo there's public evidence now that the Greek coast guard lied about the timeline and its actions:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65942426

This is not unexpected: after the shipwreck near Cutro Italian authorities also repeatedly lied about their actions, but the lies were so thin that they were easily disproved with publicly available evidence.

gabrielesvelto,
@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

@ekknappenberger maybe that there's now ample evidence that the Greek coast guard lied through its teeth about the rescue effort leading to the death of 600+ people including 100+ children? If that's not news then what is?

gabrielesvelto,
@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

@lindarosesmit I did not expect this to be shared so widely and it gives me hope that so many people share the same feelings about this

gabrielesvelto,
@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

@ekknappenberger @chucker that's not what journalism is for, unless you consider writing clickbait false stories to be journalism. And even if it were joke's on them given how widely my post has been circulating: it seems I'm not the only one who's not interested about what the ultra-rich are doing.

    Earlier this year a friend gave me his old HP EliteBook so that I could hand it out to someone in need. While cleaning it up I came to appreciate just how well built it is, a really nice machine.

    The CPU soldered on the laptop's motherboard next to the heatsink, both thoroughly cleaned up from the old thermal paste

    Silvio Berlusconi just died. During his life he caused immense damage to both Italy and the EU.

    For decades he used his media empire to propagate a culture of sexism, racism and utter disregard for culture and science. He facilitated organized crime and helped Putin gain a foothold within the EU both politically and financially.

    Even though he was already waning politically after the 2012 crisis, the damage he has done within Italian society will take decades to undo.

    I'm sure other people will do some worst-of-the-worst compilation about Berlusconi but here's a few samples, in clockwise order from the upper left:

    • Throwing horns in an official picture behind Spain's foreign minister
    • Talking on the phone while Angela Merkel was waiting for him
    • Welcoming Obama and his wife with an overtly sexualized gesture with regards to her looks
    • Suggesting that Martin Schulz should play the role of a nazi in a movie about concentration camps

    Also let's not forget several of his closest associates were found guilty of crimes related to helping the Sicilian mafia and he personally employed Vittorio Mangano, a well known mafia boss and killer.

    He also paid minors in exchange for sex.

    @eniko I also think their claims of free market economy are patently false. It's free market economy for them as long as it profits them. The minute a bank folds, or an industry crashes they're all about how the state must step in with public money to save their asses.

    Youtuber NeverKnowsBest had his 2nd channel removed and appeal denied, and then had his 6 hour long video "The Entire History of Games" which he worked on for many months demonitized for supposed profanity in the video's title. Even though we can all plainly see there is none, his appeal on this was also denied https://youtu.be/FPTXRV1GU4E

    Apparently there is just nobody left at the wheel on , because this is just patently ridiculous. What good is an appeal if the same dumb as bricks AI scans the content again and comes up again with the same false positives? Why isn't there a human who can spend literally 2 seconds verifying there's nothing to this claim?

    gabrielesvelto,
    @gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

    @eniko it looks like the video has been restored, very sad that one needs to go to these lengths just to be able to keep your stuff up. No wonder many people doing it as a job eventually quit in frustration.

    cwebber, to random

    As someone who really dislikes the mega-containerization approach and has been unhappy about it since Docker came in with a splash about a decade ago, I'm happy to see a pretty well written criticism of the idea that conatiner systems like Flatpak, Docker, etc are doing a good job of making things easier or more secure for users or devs. They aren't. https://blog.brixit.nl/developers-are-lazy-thus-flatpak/

    So here's me speaking favorably about Debian, Arch, Guix, Nix, etc. And all of those can use Guix or Nix as a userspace package manager.

    But lord have mercy. Don't use these mega black box systems. You're just accruing a gigabyte sized ball of technical debt for every component in your operating system if you use those.

    gabrielesvelto,
    @gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

    @cwebber I'm glad to know that I'm not the only developer complaining about Flatpak. I made a rant some time ago about the issues I encountered as a Firefox developer in both Flatpak and Snap (because you can't really separate the two at this stage).

    Funnily while we still have plenty of problems with them that aren't present in packaged versions of Firefox we solved many... by punching holes in the sandbox:

    @eniko to quote Morrowind: this is unexpected but not unwelcome

    augieray, to random
    @augieray@mastodon.social avatar

    This quote is so sharp and pithy, it sounds like it would come from a comedian, not a diplomat. But, it's also true and important to the point he's making:

    “The Kremlin often claimed it had the second-strongest military in the world, and many believed it. Today, many see Russia's military as the second strongest in Ukraine.”

    • US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken

    https://www.businessinsider.com/blinken-slams-russia-military-2nd-strongest-in-ukraine-2023-6?r=US&IR=T

    gabrielesvelto,
    @gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

    @augieray people started using that line as a joke as soon as Russia's failures became apparent last year. Hearing a diplomat using the same line feels very different though. I feel it's really important because Putin's regime has relied for years on the west taking Russian propaganda at face value. This worked as an enabler for the regime abroad. No more.
