StampedingLonghorn,

@tk I do that too. I also do that with armrests in office chairs to feel how sloppy they are, especially in the conference room.

One irony about calling many Internet-connected devices "smart" whatevers is that in reality they're incredibly stupid.

Most "smart" devices depend 100% on servers on the Internet, owned by the manufacturer, to do anything. That's where the "smarts" live, and if the company goes out of business, or (more likely) decides to stop supporting the product, you quickly find out just how dumb it is.

And the sad thing is, most "smart" stuff just runs embedded Linux these days. Manufacturers could offer an option to enable SSH so technical people could do all kinds of neat stuff with them. But they don't, most likely out of fear of being sued because something got hacked.

Actually no, it's probably because they want to retain full control over what they sell you because they're greedy fuckwits.

Yeah, that's it.

StampedingLonghorn,

@notthatdelta @zorinlynx Heaven forbid they let you turn a smart toothbrush into a vibrator.

StampedingLonghorn,

@notthatdelta @zorinlynx It really is wasteful and another reason why I don't buy anything "smart".

The data is flowing again, and my daily temperature graphics are fixed and now updating at https://zacklabe.com/arctic-temperatures/

So sorry about the long delay!!

As you can see, there was a remarkable surge of "warmth" (poleward heat transport) into the high Arctic this month.

StampedingLonghorn,

@ZLabe Uh oh, I just looked up https://stratobserve.com/misc_vort3d and it appears there was an SSW event. In about 11 days, there will be some cold air break off and slide toward North America again. I'm tired of the cold. I just want it to be spring.

Make a song lyric mappy! For example: "I'm in love with the .shp of you"

StampedingLonghorn,

@pokateo 🎶 I believe in QGIS. You mappy thing 🎵

Phishing scammers now helpfully include the steps you need to take to click on their risky link in their texts. I’m sure ‘tuanosali1981@mailbox.org’ has my best interests in mind and is definitely from “the US Postal team.” I definitely shouldn’t question where they got my phone number from and why USPS wouldn’t just return a package to its sender.

StampedingLonghorn,

@silentlyeating They just had that scam story on the news.

I wonder how bullshitty mainstream news propaganda has to get before it gets past the "breaking immersion" point for most people. :blobfoxthinking:

StampedingLonghorn,

@tk Already there for me. It's either lazy journalism or brainwashing.

After 6 years of working on Snapchat's Snap Map, I was laid off today. If you have any leads for backend, open data, mapping, or other cool computer nerd positions, please let me know!

StampedingLonghorn,

@ian That's awful. I like Snap Map and it was nice to see my contributions being used on there.

Nobody talks about sxsw anymore.

StampedingLonghorn,

@itsjustdj That's really a shame. I enjoyed it every year.

StampedingLonghorn,

@itsjustdj I like the tech part of it. That was fun. It was nice because they had trains running during the weekend. I miss riding on that train.

Seems like there's this popular idea that buying a house involves moving to the edge of civilization. :blobfoxgoogly:

StampedingLonghorn,

@tk I enjoy living in the city limits, at least in Pennsylvania. That way I have access to utilities, transit, and cellular service. Surprisingly, even though this town is loaded with meth, my neighbors are really nice.

US News Headlines:

"To the American Right, Trump can do no wrong."

"To the American Left, Biden can do no wrong."

You know what you should do, refuse to vote. Straight up.

Biden is bad, Trump is bad.

There is a reason why new parties don't get roots in the US.

You are so scared that the other side will win you are not even giving a chance to new people with good ideas.

Boycott the donkey party.
Boycott the elephant party.

1/

StampedingLonghorn,

@farseen We should vote 3rd party. Canada regularly has 4 party elections with a FPTP system, so we can here too.

StampedingLonghorn,

@megapenguinx Not even hairdressers know how to cut it properly.

Half of all iron deficiency's in US infants is due to their consumption of cow's milk. We're not cows people, please limit intake of milk, especially don't give it to your kids. Brain dmange from anemia is permanent :'(

@chriscz I wasn't implying that you were. I really wasn't making a point, maybe just to be careful with what milk substitute to choose.

@lanodan @tk lol, no, I'm surprised they got up to 33mph. They don't have a good transmission.

Ive been in so many traffic jams by Amish Sunday drivers where the dude is whipping the crap out of the horse.

StampedingLonghorn,

@lanodan @tk Amish usually ride in a carriage with multiple people. That is not an easy life for a horse.

I wonder if the proliferation of e-bikes and the increasing cost of gasoline will encourage more folks to try out or at least motorscooters (electric or otherwise in either case).

StampedingLonghorn,

@tk I would except for the deer in my area. So many people die from deer accidents here. If I was in the city, I'd be scared of other idiot drivers.

@tk I was making small talk in the restroom with my coworker, and I made the remark that I like the hexagonal splash pads in the urinal. He didn't realize piss should hit the urinal at 57° to minimize splashback the most. Each angle of a hexagon is 60°.

StampedingLonghorn,

@tk Imagine a free service that lets you listen to news from hundreds of miles away. Imagine receiving a nice mix of music, news, weather, traffic, and podcasts all on one place that's not dependent on an internet connection. It's called AM radio.

Now imagine you are on the road with no access to radar. You can tune into 3 or more stations to triangulate where storms are by listening to the lightning (static) on the radio.
