Lovely Manager is being very chatty this morning, asking me questions about an audit that he could easily find the answers to meaning I can't concentrate on putting together the running order for tonight's show.

Using vague language about scientific facts misleads readers

Using subjective phrasing like "scientists believe" makes facts seem like opinions.

@arstechnica yes, that is how words work. that's how they've always worked. so the expectation is that anyone who speaks that language understands that language.

we need to get better at handling people controlled by fear.

you can spot them easily. they are the ones whose ideology seems to be against shit. I talk like that a lot of the time, and guess why. it's the fear.

berating people who are controlled by fear isnt going to influence them, as you already know from experiences in both positions.

abusing their fear could influence them, but that's not worth doing.

I can identify them. but what's the best way to reach them in your experience?

I'm occasionally asked what is the most disturbing film I've ever seen. This one is easy because there is absolutely no doubt: "Salò" (aka "Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom"). Directed and co-written by Pier Paolo Pasolini, it's focused on portraying graphic atrocities in Italy during WWII. It is widely considered to be the most notorious professionally produced film ever made, and has been frequently banned (in some cases to this day) in various countries. I've never walked out on a film as an adult, but it is probably the only film that I almost walked out on during a theatrical screening.

Sidenote: Pasolini himself was murdered three weeks before the film's release.

falcennial,
@falcennial@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren what is the purpose of making that film?

@lauren that sounds lookuppable. thanks Lauren. I will brace myself should I do so.

Im going to have a cup of tea and I'm really excited!

I heard the ancient wisdom again this morning, in a book that pointed out it keeps being ratified again and again in modern scientific enquiry:

happiness comes exclusively from wanting what you have, and not at all from having what you want.

falcennial,
@falcennial@mastodon.social avatar

I didnt know I was capable of excitement about a cup of tea but on reflection it's only logical. I love tea, and I want to be happy. so wanting this thing I have, which makes me happy, well of course it should work this way.

falcennial,
@falcennial@mastodon.social avatar

how does our modern world of hyperconsumption work with this idea that happiness comes from wanting what you have, not from getting what you want?

it doesnt work well. we consume incredible wonders and are often miserable while we do it.

advertising, which serves our consumption economics, is the discipline of getting people to want shit you have enough so they buy it.

hard not to take the view that this constant bombardment of ads trains us into craving and out of happiness.

I am loving this new outlook I got from a therapy session, which reached me through hearing this fact:

my behaviour and my identity do not have to be consistent with my past behaviour and identity; they have to be consistent with my values.

for me, having this pointed out like that has improved my life. I now find it much easier spotting reactions I dont want to be having and determining what reaction my values would prefer, and doing that instead.

bearing more witness than the sum of your combined responsibility and influence is self-harm.

because showing depictions of real world horror to a person over and over is a recognised form of torture.

please observe your responsibilities to the problems of the world in full, including the ones you have to your own wellbeing.

sacrificing your health hurts the cause. it does not help it.

A goat got into chicken food and I had to force feed him baking soda to try to save his life (we'll see how that goes ☹️ ).

I emailed the CNN reporter who interviewed me about satellite pollution a couple years ago to see if she's interested in the space junk story.

And it's Vaisakhi/Khalsa Day, so I'm going to get amazing free food!

"The head of the IPCC has compared the rollout of carbon capture and storage (#CCS) to "trying to push water uphill," questioning a technology that the oil and gas industry has long touted as integral to net-zero emission plans.

The International Energy Agency has previously called for the oil and gas industry to let go of the "illusion" that carbon capture is a solution to climate change, pushing instead for energy majors to ramp up investments in clean energy."
