    No, guys, they have not achieved "net energy gain" (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/06/us-scientists-achieve-net-energy-gain-second-time-fusion-reaction) because you're only counting the energy IN the laser, not the energy it takes to FIRE the laser, which is hundreds, maybe thousands of times more.

    It's misleading and irresponsible to let people think we're anywhere near break-even in fusion.

    enkiusz,
    @enkiusz@is-a.cat avatar

    @cstross @robpike that's because the nif is largely about nuclear weapons research not fusion as energy source.

    I’ve tried to say this a couple of different ways over the past few weeks, but I am extremely uncomfortable with the emerging line of rhetoric on the climate left that casts strategies of adaptation to the circumstances of heating as somehow acquiescing to the extractive industries and/or their enablers in rightwing politics and the mainstream media. Adaptation really is all we have now. It’s up to us to ensure that it’s liberatory in conception and practice.

    I wanna share some wisdom. I know I talk about this a lot, but I want to use my experiences to help others. If it means mentioning over and over again what happened - so be it!

    It’s hard to feel like you have to sacrifice what you love to find love. In the end, is it right to give up what makes you happy to make someone else feel secure in themselves? its no one’s responsibility to fix other’s insecurities.

    I was having a conversation with my dad about the guy who strung me along last year. He told me the reason why I wasn’t chosen is likely because the guy was insecure and didn’t like the fact that I was doing better in life than him.

    He was 26 and I was 22. He wasn’t the happiest. He was very insecure. I remember him telling me how he felt the need to act more assertive at work because of the fact he looks younger due to his short stature. I will say he also lied on his dating profile about his height. He also didn’t like his current job at the time on and ended up getting a new one. I think the age difference may have played a role in his insecurities.

    My dad said because I was happy with what I did, was (and still) going for a master’s, and had a side business, this probably made him feel envy. He was probably upset that someone younger than him was doing better than him in life. I never once bragged about what I did, I barely talked about it unless asked.

    I see my dad’s point. The other girlfriends he’s had all hold jobs that pay significantly less than his and mine. Perhaps this is just some coincidence, or perhaps not. But it’s hard to ignore this fact given the insecurity he displays. They also are in jobs that don’t get a lot of recognition or associated with some type of high status. Not only that, they are also in female dominated jobs which makes me wonder if he was worried that I wouldve found someone else easy. This is no way takes away their value as people, as it shouldn’t. They too are valuable human beings contributing to society.

    I’ve had many guys tell me I’m attractive. Insecure men will often think attractive women have a bunch of guys going after her, and may not bother to pursue her. Given I work in a male dominated area, this may have also made him even more insecure. But again, not my problem that is his to work through. One of the hard things when you’re considered attractive is that many guys will like you, but they won’t go after you because of their insecurity.

    Yet, it sucks to realize this. It sucks to realize that some guy thought I was out to compete with him, when really all I wanted was a loving relationship with him. I was wrongly judged. I know deep down I would’ve been such a loving partner. He let his insecurity get to him, and used it against me. Insecure men hardly go after women who they perceive to be doing better than them. They go after women who in some way are “vulnerable” in their eyes and take advantage of that.

    So moral of the story, one’s insecurity is not your job to fix. Any guy who thinks he is going to be easily dumped by a woman should be avoided because he will make you responsible for his insecurities. Your life does not revolve around a guy, but YOU!
