Last weekend I rebased both of my computers from Fedora Silverblue to Universal Blue's Bluefin.

Works great so far and the rebase worked pretty seemlessly with all of my existing programming and music docker/distrobox stuff.

Anyway, I'm getting deeper into the immutable Linux rabbit hole. 🤓

Seems like mainstream media and regular people are finally starting to catch on to the truth about "AI".

Not to sound like a broken fucking record playing into the abyss but... we're long overdue for a reckoning on the ethics of AI.

Screaming that some technology or practice is "the future" or "here to stay", doesn't absolve us from the responsibility of making sure it doesn't make things worse for actual human beings, it only raises the stakes.

Humanity is the point.

Sad to hear that Hepcat singer Gregory Lee passed away recently. He certainly had a sweet and clear voice.

Didn't listen to a lot of Hepcat frankly, but I love the tracks "I Can't Wait" and "Riding the Region" that were on the Hellcat Records "Give 'Em The Boot" compilations, which I listened to constantly throughout high school. Nostalgic for me, and otherwise fantastic chill tunes in that classic ska/soul pocket for sure.

If data (words, images, music, stats, etc) is the new code (in the sense that it is required for creating computer programs which achieve a desired output), shouldn't it be similarly valued by our society and economy?

Shouldn't the creatives whose works enabled the existence of technology that would otherwise be impossible with hand-coded algorithms be, at the very least, credited and compensated for their contribution?

The answer to both is "yes".

Akira Toriyama.

One of the all time great Japanese mangaka, illustrators and designers. 68 is too young. His characters, worlds and stories filled so many of us with lasting feelings of fun, excitement, strength, courage, joy and a spirit of adventure. All of that from a little bit of ink on a few sheets of paper. No matter how old I get it makes me feel like anything is possible.

Rest in peace.

Does anyone know of an existing open source project working on AI model poisoning or style cloaking, in the vein of and ?

I'm interested in this tech but they both seem to be proprietary, and I'd like to see if there is any work being done on the open source side of things.

Corporate social media: We're basically the entire internet. We're like the modern day telephone companies. Global society depends on us in every way. We're the new "public" town square! 😇

Corporate social media: Oh yeah, but we also "own" all of the data that you post here (somehow even the stuff you don't own or control), in all forms past, present and future including derivative works. And we're going to sell it for millions of dollars while you struggle to afford groceries. 👹

I hope there's always a place for art made by people, with genuine human agency and creativity.

I just want to make stuff and take in the things that other people have made.

As long as that culture can still exist somewhere, I'll seek it out.

@emmetoneill@mas.to avatar

I love game consoles, but they don't really make much sense anymore.

The PS5 and XsX are practically identical hardware, and also effectively the same as an x86_64 gaming PC. But then on the software side, you get a simplified OS that's arbitrarily limited and locked down compared to Windows and especially Linux. They're computers, just held back by crappy restrictions.

What's the point when almost all the same games are coming to PC anyway?

emmetoneill,
@emmetoneill@mas.to avatar

And listen, I know they've always just been locked down computers.

But back in the day they were at least different from eachother in how they handled input, graphics and sound, and with sometimes radically different controllers and architecture. On top of that they used to have their own library of games. Which is why Nintendo will continue to be fine as long as they can keep unique doing things with their hardware and exclusive software.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Steam Deck will be seen as a paradigm changing device like the IBM PC was.

Not because of sales or whatever, but because it has blown the lid off of the games industry by showing that you can give people a full on, unrestricted linux PC with a sleek, console-like UI and broad appeal.

Just a couple years out we're seeing a wave of similar devices, and if they start moving to SteamOS things are going to be very different.

Slimey tech bro evangelists just love to depict AI as something that will "help people", but the opposite is true: AI is a content farm built almost entirely from the exploitation of human works--without consent, licensing or even basic attribution.

Even OpenAI is in court arguing that they have no business model without infringement and exploitation of other people's hard work.

AI doesn't work for us. We work for it.

emmetoneill, to Steamdeck
@emmetoneill@mas.to avatar

Steam broadly giving a green light to a practically infinite tsunami of legally dubious and generally unethical AI-generated garbage "content" is a bad omen for the future of the medium.

In the short term the store will be swamped with low effort, low quality generated asset flips. This is already happening on other stores.

But more importantly, the long term value and appreciation of real games made by actual people with human brains will undoubtedly suffer.

I like the new MIDI clip generators feature of Live 12 from what I've seen. I wish Bitwig could something similar in terms of baking the results of MIDI effects into a clip.

I know you can route one MIDI track into another and record that way, but it's a bit inconvenient compared to Live's new feature.
