Systems Engineer / Solutions Architect. Musician. Gamer. Amateur radio operator. Open Source advocate.

I really couldn't care less about CW standards. I also find the whole concept of rules around following/boosting/replying to be incredibly stupid. If you don't like something I did, just block or mute me.

A question for native speakers of #English:

In German, when estimating (or charging for) the time a certain business project takes, we often use the units "Personenstunde" (PS, "person hour") and especially "Personentag" (PT, "person day"). This differs from calendar days in that you can do 5 PT of work in one day if five people are working on it.

Is there an equivalent term in English? Does it have an acronym? Is the gendered "man-day" still the default?

#business #AskFedi

draeath,
@draeath@social.sdf.org avatar

@scy the closest I think is man-hours. We generally don't do it by day, I think?

Watch this satellite obliterate the Kuiper Belt object moving through this set of images.

The dumb satellite is so bright that our auto-detect software threw out the whole stack, because it destroyed the average brightness.

It pisses me off to no end that my taxpayer-funded telescope time is now less and less effective because of one for-profit private company.

(P.S. software dudes: please don't try to mansplain workarounds, believe me, a LOT of astronomers are working hard on this)

A gif of a Kuiper Belt object slowly moving across a set of images. It just looks like a fuzzy dot. Toward the end of the sequence, there's a super bright diagonal line that covers up the moving dot - that was a satellite.

draeath,
@draeath@social.sdf.org avatar

@sundogplanets what sort of wavelengths is this a problem for?

Like is it screwing up every type of terrestrial observation, or just specific areas like the visible spectrum and infrared?

draeath,
@draeath@social.sdf.org avatar

@sundogplanets jeez! I could understand reflections, but if they're also spewing signal noise too, now that's just... ugh.

I was hoping your reply would make me a little less angry about the situation, but that seems to have backfired :(

OK, let's talk boat interiors, since that's my next step here.

Nearly all the boats in my game will have to have actual interiors with doors, because you generally don't want to be on deck while boating across a literal boiling river.

However, interior blueprints for boats are a little hard to find, unless I just don't know the magic word. Lotsa yachts.

From what I can glean from the non-yachts, ship interiors are extremely basic. Like, here's a box with a door.

draeath,
@draeath@social.sdf.org avatar

@Craigp any chance you can get someone to show you around a ship or two, sorts like a tour? There's nothing like getting your eyes on something, and I've found people who are proud of something they have or work with tend to react positively to someone who's looking to make sure their art does a good job representing that thing.

I remember when as a kid I learned about yeast.

You put yeast in an environment with some sugars, and it will eat the sugars and excrete alcohol until either sugar runs out or alcohol concentration is enough to kill it.

I remember thinking to my 11 or 12 year old self: "wow, yeast is dumb!"

Anyway, completely unrelated:

    After posting my last poll on knowing your spouse or significant other's cell phone number, I think we should all take a minute to memorize the number. After all, you never know when we may have an epic-level system meltdown and be reduced to using the few available landlines to contact them!

    draeath,
    @draeath@social.sdf.org avatar

    @dancinyogi I suspect if things go sufficiently nasty that we would need to rely on memorized numbers, it's likely the phone systems will be significantly impaired if operable at all.
