You can’t tell me you’ve never tripped, fell, and found yourself having sex before? Duh. It’s like so common.

Like holding the analog stick of your controller when turning it on.

Isn’t that called masturbation?

Does anyone remember these? This was a time before answering machines, hard line voice mail, beepers, cell phones etc? (lemmy.world)

At a business, a secretary, almost always a woman, would answer the phone for all calls. There were no direct lines into anyone. If you were in she would transfer the call to your office. If you were out she would use this pad to take messages. When you came back in to the office you would always stop at the front desk and you...

Can we talk for a moment on how the prosecutors expect to have a COMPUTER FILE (a PDF) “returned” to them?

Thank you! That is what came to my mind, but I couldn’t remember enough to find it.

I do t know UC Riverside’s history for how they manage their patents, but I’m on the side of giving them the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. It’s okay to have a patent. It’s ok to profit off an invention you spent a lot of money producing. But what’s not ok would be upping the price so high that people have to choose dying over getting the product because they simply can’t afford it. Let’s hope UC does the former and not the latter.

Public universities receive funding from a multitude of sources. Research is typically funded by grants, which may come from state or federal sources, but they can also come from alumni, fundraising, or charitable trusts.

Regardless, patents are a necessary part of invention. As others have pointed out, without a patent, what’s to stop some other entity from coming along and (for example) using your hard work to make themselves rich? I’d wager if it were your invention/discovery, you’d want protections too.

There are some entities out there that would easily abuse patents. But I find it hard to believe a public university would be one of them.

To a degree you should always “read the room” and adjust both what you say and how you say. But also you should balance that with being open and honest (especially with yourself) about how you feel. I put my foot in my mouth quite a lot. Some of it is plain ignorance, and sometimes I let my emotions get the better of myself. They’re all learning experiences. But you’re right in thinking that a dog is great company. 😁

Hey that’s all you can do: try. Sometimes you’ll get it wrong. It the more you try, the better you’ll get at it. I know that’s a little cliche, but I do believe. Maybe next time start smaller?

Is there a more politically and ideologically diverse alternative for Lemmy?

I know the real answer is reddit but I really don’t want to go back now that I’ve already grown used to life without it. I was hoping for Lemmy to be a viable substitute but it isn’t. I can see how this place is wonderful for the certain type of person but that person is not me. My experience during the past 6+ months has...

@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve skimmed some of your comments, and honestly it looks like you’re already getting a diverse experience considering your political and ideological way of thinking. That’s not a condemnation, but a quick observation.

We can only know what you show us. The rest we have to fill in based on what you’ve said in the past. That’s how this stuff works. It’s a back and forth. For it to work, you actually have to contribute.

dohpaz42,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

I think I see the problem. You left Reddit, but Reddit didn’t leave you.

What I mean by this is that you care more about the responses of internet strangers than you do having a genuine a discussion. As long as you’re being truthful, honest, and giving good faith arguments, then who cares if people downvote you or call you names. You’ve done your job. You’ve led that proverbial horse to water. You can’t make them drink. Let it go, and love on.

Of course we’re going to form an opinion of you based on what you say. It’s all we have. If you don’t like the opinion being formed, then give us more insight to who you genuinely are so we can change our minds. And before you say it doesn’t matter, it obviously does or you wouldn’t be here making the argument you’re making. Be honest with yourself.

Binary takes up way more space when written out. Because binary translates to numbers, and those numbers will need to be translated into characters, the two people would need to settle on a common character set to ensure that messages can be properly decoded and not end up with the black diamond question mark symbol. Personally, I like UTF-8, but it might not be the best choice because some characters may take up much more space than others, resulting in a potential buffer overflow.

What if we are already serving our “1,000 year sentence” and instead we’re unknowingly developing a way to go deeper into the inception?

dohpaz42,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

Hmm… 🤔

Critics of anti-Zionism have argued that opposition to Zionism can be hard to distinguish from antisemitism, and that criticism of Israel may be used as an excuse to express viewpoints that might otherwise be considered antisemitic. In discussion of the relationship between antisemitism and anti-Zionism, “one theory holds that anti-Zionism is no more than veiled anti-Semitism”. This is contrasted with the theory “that criticism of Israeli politics has been discredited as anti-Zionism, and thus linked with anti-Semitism, in order to prevent such criticism”.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m an idiot. But in what little defense I may have, I am trying to learn the difference. I keep getting hung up on who is who because every time I turn around there is a different name being used for a particular group and I can’t for the life of me keep them all straight.

All I do know for certain is that religion is bad because of this and many more reasons.

dohpaz42,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

But isn’t the underlying reason for the land based on religious beliefs of “God-given” ownership?

Hmm. While reading up on who is who, I see that I might have had my sides mixed up again.

Ok, so here is what I’m getting so far today:

  1. Palestine is a territory that’s been around for thousands of years, but has suffered many conflicts with many countries.
  2. Israel has been around since 1948.
  3. Israel has been forcing Palestinians out of their land over the years.
  4. Palestine is internationally recognized, while Israel is not.
  5. Palestine is a country of Arabs, while Israel is a territory of Jews.
  6. Zionism is basically an Israeli belief and the idea that if you don’t agree with it then you hate Jews — I think this is where my confusion showed its head in my original comment.
  7. Israel is considered one of the largest economies in the Middle East — probably why everyone sides with them?

Aside of the recent atrocities of Israel, am I missing anything else? I do appreciate y’all’s patience in explaining this to me.

dohpaz42,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

I genuinely didn’t know better until my conversation with Deceptichum and Prinebutt. I’m still learning on this topic. It’s not coming easy to me for some reason. I do understand Israel is committing war crimes and acts of genocide. That’s pretty obvious. It’s the subtle nuances that I’m struggling with, and it honestly confuses me sometimes.

I can’t help but wonder if 1984 is art imitating life, or the playbook for modern-day facists. Regardless, it’s creepy af how near accurate it has become.

dohpaz42,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

While I agree with the heart of your sentiment, I feel that anybody center and to the right of center are by far the worst of the two evils.

dohpaz42,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

Mostly through personal experiences. I live in a red county in a mostly red state. I once somehow pissed a vet off because he assumed I was conservative based solely on my appearance. In his words, I looked too cool to not be republican. That was probably the saddest, yet funniest, experience I’ve had.

I’ve lost decades-old friends because of their right-leaning ideologies. Never once had I put them down for their beliefs. But they were quick to call me an idiot or zombie or otherwise insult my intelligence because I dared think different than them. Suffice it to say, I am not friends with them anymore.

The friends that I do have are my friends because I steer clear of talking politics. Not that I haven’t tried. But somehow, even my so-called left-leaning friends seem to think differently than me. Maybe it’s me. I don’t know.

I like to think I’m fairly open-minded. There are things I won’t change my mind about, but I will listen to what other people have to say and I won’t insult them for it.

I don’t know. It’s ultimately how I feel as a whole. For the most part I know most people are good people, even if they’re misguided. But it’s that vocal minority that espouse nothing but vitriol and hate and revel in other people’s misery that I have a problem with. And those people are more often than not, center or right of center as far as I can tell.

dohpaz42,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like I do not have a lot in common with them. Their ideals and mine do not align. Do I hate them? Not inherently, no. But I do very much disagree with their ideals and their methods. There are a few individuals I wouldn’t mind seeing leaving office sooner rather than later. But that’s a pipe dream.

dohpaz42,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

Way back in my 20s I had a manager who was power tripping against me stating I did not respect her. I told her that I would do as she says because she is my manager, but respect is earned. She and her boss both argued that respect is given. I gave up and a few weeks later I quit because that job (and some personal stuff) destroyed my mental health. Ultimately it was the best decision I could have made for myself at that time.

I believe that the wording is awkward in that you will need additional information if you’re one of the three listed criteria. If you’re just removing it from public view, you only need to provide your name, address, phone and social security number.
