Have you ever stopped listening to or trusting a person who posts information in media, or online because of a "red flag" ?

That is are there certain topics, habits, actions etc. that instantly decrease your trust in a person you might have otherwise listened to on a podcast, article, or video?

Are there any "green flags" that build trust?

@futurebird Both-sides-ism (performative neutrality) or being on the wrong side of a major issue (transphobic, homophobic, climate denier, science denier, etc).

@EPIKURAS The issue is not time zones, it's time standards: time passes more quickly on the Moon due to General Relativity, so the Moon needs its own time standard. Also, the Earth rotates relative to the Moon so there is no preferred Earth time zone.

@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@EPIKURAS Again, time zones are not the issue here. Please read the article.

Wow I was late to the party. That's what I get for going to a staff meeting instead of hanging out on social media.

Another thing I am missing on is the ability to add notes to blocks.

For some, it's obvious. For others, I'd really like to be reminded why I blocked.

[edit to add: I mean notes added during the blocking process, without having to go to the account and add a note there.]

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg There's no guarantee they'll get to it, but you can file it as an issue: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues

Joey! 🦘

I got a chance to have a baby kangaroo on my lap for the first time! 😍

He felt all angular legs & tail pushing round inside his rescue pouch.

My son does wildlife rescue. This poor sweetie lost his mother – she was hit by a car. 😢 He goes to a registered foster home now, & is big enough to do fine. 🤞 🤞 🤞

Joey snuggled into his "pouch." Only his face is visible. The pouch is a bag made of snuggly cloth, with an elasticized opening. It's turquoise, with a white pattern.

The link in the article to the actual response from WPATH/USPATH is broken; here is a link that actually works: https://www.wpath.org/media/cms/Documents/Public%20Policies/2024/17.05.24%20Response%20Cass%20Review%20FINAL%20with%20ed%20note.pdf?_t=1716075965

@BlackAzizAnansi Articles people link to here, mostly, plus Apple News as a supplement.

Do you see a series of sunken rectangles or 16 circles?

This is The Coffer Illusion.

Our brains are geared toward identifying objects & here, “pixels” are grouped to form edges & contours, shapes, & objects. The image is inherently ambiguous so there is no “right” grouping.

Rectangles dominate first for most people - including me, but keep staring & the image may flip to circles.

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril I see the circles when I focus on them, but in my peripheral vision I only see the rectangles.

Not sure why safari suddenly renders Mastodon advanced mode UI so poorly, I just accidentally boosted a post when tapping on the favourite button

I know this isn't a Mastodon bug because it's fine on Chrome and Firefox

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup It's working fine for me. Is it possible you have an extension that's interfering? Try turning off extensions if you're using them.

Do not ask a language model questions involving reasoning, factuality, or moral judgment. Language is a vehicle for those, but it is not the SOURCE of them. And there is an enormous amount of language in the public sphere that’s devoid of them—and that trained the models.

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@Cdespinosa When I was younger I remember reading theories that the human facility of cognition is identical to our facility of language. I think we're seeing evidence now disproving that idea.
