I wanna surface this to my main timeline because it's kinda important to say out loud from time to time:

Businesses do NOT "have to" focus exclusively on their return to shareholders. Not legally, not morally.

That is the misguided OPINION of a 1970 essay by Milton Friedman, and the fact that everyone seemed to just hop on board that opinion is a significant reason why we switched gears into hyper-hell-capitaliam since then.

Push back on this every time you see it.

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@dogfox Yeah, but not SOLE responsibility. The idea that you have to raise next quarter's profits at all costs is just bananapants crazy, when you think about it.

Companies used to believe they had a responsibility to their shareholders, yes, but also their employees, the surrounding community, the industry, and the country at large.

Nowadays, you'd be asked if you are, or were, ever a member of the Chinese Communist Party if you suggested any of that.

I strongly believe we're within 5 years of the generative AI boom collapsing almost completely, and it will have a profound economic impact, as the use cases for the products being sold almost entirely suck arse.

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@GossiTheDog 5 years? So you're an optimist, huh? 🤣

(For the record, I think there are legitimate, long-term beneficial uses, but they're VERY limited, given the nature of the tech. So much of what we're seeing now is "solution in search of a problem, any problem, even a problem it doesn't really solve" thinking and it shows.)

My wife: "So, Target doesn't have any pride stuff for kids."

Me: "Well we can still go; kiddo needs clothes for summer, not just Pride."

Her: "They have pride stuff for dogs."

Me: "Okay, we are not going there."

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@tess But aren't you worried that your child is going to grow up feeling like their parents listen to them and value their opinions and will have a real sense of self-confidence and respect to fall back on when times get tough???

(Sarcasm filter turned off: Yer doing some admirable parenting there. 👍)

Real talk, whenever you talk to GOP-voting relatives or “friends” now relentlessly drive home that they’re supporting a convicted criminal.

Literally say in every sentence that they’re supporting a convicted felon to drive that spike home into their brains.

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs At this point, I don't think anything matters to them anymore. Being loyal matters more than who you're being loyal TO.

ESPECIALLY given that the right-wing media has been preparing heavily for this by downplaying his actions, downplaying the charges, questioning the integrity of the judge, etc.

It's like a version of the narcissist's prayer: "He didn't do it, but if he did, it wasn't so bad, and if it was, who he did it to wasn't important, and if they were, it had to be done."

whitequark, to random

many of you have seen me speak out against Thiel companies participating in Rust and NixOS development, but I don't think I ever clearly said why

as anyone who has opened and read my bio will know, I'm fine with the existence and use of weapons. no, what I have the problem with is imperialism; and Palantir and Andruil, and their acceptance, is currently the means by which it's capturing our communities

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark If I make screwdrivers, I may not realistically be able to prevent bomb makers from buying those screwdrivers and making bombs with them, sure.

But at a MINIMUM, I'm sure as fuck not going to accept funding or input from the bomb makers to try to ensure that there are "better screwdrivers for making bombs with" in the world. That bar shouldn't be too high.

In short, I agree with you and support your decisions.

God, 1000% this. And then to have them hold up "But we don't know how the human mind works, either!" as a shield is infuriating.

LLMs are doing exactly what they were predicted they would do and are exhibiting exactly the predicted failure modes. We understand them well enough. And sure, we may not know how the human mind works, but the output is entirely dissimilar! https://mastodon.social/@mhoye/111308058043936791

Slavery still exists in the modern world. The modern WESTERN world. Look up "the prison-industrial complex" if you haven't before. That's slavery, but we pretend it's okay because it's happening to someone who has been found to break to law.

(And like, first, I don't care, that's not a good enough reason to enslave anyone, nothing is, but also, a lot of folks are in jail who really fuckin shouldn't be, so it's insult to injury, too.) https://dair-community.social/@KimCrayton1/110757978517525453

So many great developers I’ve been looking up to have completely fallen for the AI scam.

Extremely annoying and disappointing, but also morbidly fascinating.

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs Yeah, it's wild. I work for an "AI company", but one that's been around since before the LLM hype and that uses a wide variety of computer intelligence tools to solve legitimate problems and not in a way that costs jobs.

And every time people ask what I do nowadays, I have to add "but not like how you think!" really quickly before people start giving me the stink-eye.

It's the crypto "fool's gold rush" all over again.

Microsoft Recall is horrifying for many reasons but it's also really funny to me that the operating system, processes, window manager and desktop environment all cooperate to render text to the screen, so the computer knows what it says (that's how screen readers work after all) but then we're going to use AI to OCR it back out of screenshots because, just like, fuck it why not. It feels nihilistic in a way.

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@aburka @joby I'm willing to bet it's because there's always gonna be edge cases where OS functions aren't being used to display text (for example, in an image file) and they didn't want any way for any little morsel of delicious information to escape their grasp.

    One thing I have learned today, is that you shouldn't have a contentious toot blow up when you're going to be busy at work for many hours. I feel a bit like I'm necroposting to reply back so many hours after a lot of these conversations have petered out, but what am I going to do, NOT post on the internet?

    Netanyahu's place in history is that he will be mentioned in the same breath as Hitler, Stalin, and Mao.

    Hitler especially, because this dude's actions are sparking such a huge wave of unfounded antisemitism, the comparison simply has to be made.

    So much respect for the Isrealis out there protesting this monster and his (factual, founded by the ICC) crimes against humanity. https://mastodon.social/@LukaszOlejnik/112518707499375275

    On our international flight home everyone, and I mean everyone, around us was coughing. To be fair, I was coughing too, but my wife and I were masked. I saw exactly zero other masks on there.

    This gives an insteresting attack vector I hadn't previously thought of - instead of stealing the victim's data, insert doctored screenshots and OCR database history to make it look as if the victim was committing illegal activities. Then, call in the cops, who confiscate the computer, check Recall, and oh my goodness, a felon has been found!

    Microsoft have REALLY not thought through this one, like, AT ALL at all. https://cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog/112565106923761296
