I think Artifact is sneakily one of the most interesting new apps in a while — was fun to talk to Kevin Systrom about the whole "TikTok for text" thing, and why we need more places to find cool stuff on the internet https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/13/23871561/artifact-links-news-reading-app-tiktok

@davidpierce I am liking artifact, and it’s really interesting to see it slowly turning into a social network

@caseyliss I’m pretty sure hiding episode counts just saved me a huge spoiler on a big appletv+ show. So thanks.

@travissouthard the app I’m referring to is Callsheet, Casey’s excellent IMDB replacement. It’s worth checking out. @caseyliss

nobody talks about how amazing low-light photography is now, compared to 20 years ago. in 2003, i would have to clone stamp out the grain in my photos 😭

@travissouthard @mitch I learned to shoot on my moms canon SLR from the 70s, so I’m still a little impressed by automatic focus and exposure 😅

With progressive lenses, are you supposed to be looking at the big 27" screen through the "near" zone or the "far" zone? It's about arm length away and I am using the far zone.

I did some measuring and looking through the near zone is gorgeous if the screen is about 12" from my face but that's way too close to even see an entire sentence sometimes.

That's a pretty suspicious number. It's like someone decided to make the near focal length 1ft because it sounded like a nice number to them.

cschrader,
@cschrader@jawns.club avatar

@jmovs @bigzaphod just reading glasses are very cheap in the US too, but what he's referring to is a custom-blended set of reading and distance lenses

cschrader,
@cschrader@jawns.club avatar

@bigzaphod I’m in the same boat as you. I have astigmatism and use progressives for a few years now. I’ve debated getting computer glasses, but I also have prescription sunglasses and I'm not sure I want to juggle three different pairs.

Following someone on the Fediverse is broken — the user-experience (UX) is not good.

Especially if the person you want to follow is on a server different from yours.

Sure it technically works, BUT in practice it is broken —

I have done user testing with people who have used other social-media, but who have never used the Fediverse

Virtually all of them fail at following someone on a remote server

THIS IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO COLLECTIVELY FIX.

I'll explain —

@reiver I love mastodon, but this is the thing that most badly needs attention. I recently found the safari extension homecoming, which is a decent workaround for the moment.

Yet another data-breach letter, except this one is from a company that I have no recollection of doing business with and references a second company that's also new to me--I had to check a footnote to see that this involves an insurance company that is changing its name.

Still unclear to me: Why would any insurance company need to store my SSN, much less apparently store it unencrypted, after issuing the goddamn policy?

cschrader,
@cschrader@jawns.club avatar

@robpegoraro I recently got a breach letter from a company I’ve never heard of who (i think?) provides services to TIAA. My SSN was compromised because of a vulnerability in the kind of software you’d use to send a file to a client that’s too big for email

cschrader,
@cschrader@jawns.club avatar

@robpegoraro yup! The company was Pension Benefit Information LLC

@caseyliss I love Callsheet. You put in a ton of work and it shows.

Is it possibly on your list to filter the list of cast members within a show? I was just looking for a character in the last of us, and it’s a big list sorted by number of episodes, so it’s hard to know exactly where to look

cschrader,
@cschrader@jawns.club avatar

@caseyliss also I missed at first that this area was “clickable”. This may just be a me thing, I’m not sure if there’s anything you can change that doesn’t make the interface worse

cschrader,
@cschrader@jawns.club avatar

@caseyliss also one last little thing: the Wikipedia button for the last of us goes by default to the video game page, but I guess you’re at the mercy of Wikipedia’s chaotic taxonomy.

The disambiguation link is right up top, so it’s just one extra tap, so it’s not a huge deal.

cschrader,
@cschrader@jawns.club avatar

@caseyliss being able to change how the list is sorted might be a decent alternative to building out an actual filter function if it’s easier
