An M4 iPad Pro that can run iPadOS and macOS simultaneously would be an incredibly-powerful device, and it really wouldn’t take anything away from either experience — only open whole new opportunities (and price points for Apple to upsell you to)

cedros,

@stroughtonsmith @jsnell MacOS with an iPadOS “app” that can takeover the screen when not on the magic keyboard.

They did it with Front Row (Apple TV mode 😀) back in the day, even came with a remote!

A few technology notes from last weekend’s marathon…

❤️ iPhone 13 mini was a champ. Fits in the waist gel pocket with room to spare.

🫤 Meta Ray-bans died after capturing 15 thirty second clips and a handful of photos.

🫤 Bose Ultra Open died after 3.5 hours…

😡 Apple watch ultra? Let’s just say it’s on very thin ice right now.

Another Siri example:

ME: Add 3 bananas to the shopping list
SIRI: Done
ME: How many bananas did you add?
SIRI: Here are some web results

Lest you think this is hyperbole, try it yourself. Perfectly repeatable.

To me, adding basic contextual awareness to Siri is far more important than a ChatGPT-like front end.

cedros,

@davemark Basically, Siri needs an AI assistant 😂

I'm being asked about fitness trackers. I know basically nothing about them (which I guess tells you something) beyond the general tech aspects; certainly nothing about which ones are considered the most accurate for different sorts of metrics. Primary purpose is likely sleep monitoring, but other metrics, advanced functions, and connectivity options are also of interest. There seem to be an awful lot out there across a very wide price range so I really don't know where to start with a recommendation. Apple is probably off the table. Informed advice would be welcome, especially from actual users. Thanks.

cedros,

@lauren Hi Lauren, this guy puts a lot of effort into reviewing the accuracy of these devices. You’d be surprised which devices come up on top (at least from his tests).

“The Quantified Scientist” https://youtu.be/LPqtfC70QTU

cedros,

@TonyJWells @lauren 😔 that’s the other thing. The Oura ring is an interesting product, but you have to keep paying to access any of your insightful data.

cedros,

@lauren @TonyJWells it’s primarily sleep stages and duration. They might summarize those under sleep quality or recovery.

I’m no professional athlete but I do train everyday. I only track sleep duration trends. The rest I go by feel 😂

cedros,

@lauren @TonyJWells same here about google getting the data. They know me more than I do at this point.

I’m mostly concerned about how quickly they drop products / features when they lose interest. I’d like to have access to my trends over years or decades, not months.

cedros,

@lauren one more note, it’s still a device someone needs to wear most of the time to capture relevant data.

So wrist comfort, looks, and convenience features (like tap to pay, timers, haptic feedback) are things to consider as well.

🚨 New App Store terms for the E.U.

• 10% (or 17%) App Store fee (down from 15%/30%)
• +3% if you use Apple IAP
• You can use alt payment providers in-app and/or provide external links, for zero fee to Apple
• Apps distributed inside/outside App Store will have a flat 50c Core Technology Fee per [user] over 1M in a calendar year

Whatever you might want to say about the E.U., it looks like they've legitimately negotiated a better deal for devs. That’s what a working political system looks like 😄

cedros,

@stroughtonsmith, I don't mean to be one of those guys, but "old Apple” would have applied this across the board for simplicity’s sake.

Rainy foundation run.

After all these years, I finally understand what precipitation in inches means.

If it’s > 0, you will get wet. 😂

Been wondering why Apple waited until 1/19 morning to release specs, pricing, and the tour video? This would have been handy days before.

Same goes with the facial scan process for sizing. They could have allowed customers to perform scans and pick lenses days earlier to remove friction from the ordering process (also, 5am pacific face scans can be terrifying).

Makes me think that Apple actively managed demand to deliver the #VisionPro ASAP to the folks who REALLY need/want it.

Did Apple lower the AirPlay output to 720p? All the articles earlier today say 1080p, but I was looking at the specs just now and it says 720p

https://www.apple.com/apple-vision-pro/specs/

cedros,

@christianselig The text turns to 1080 when you view it through the vision pro. 😂

But yes, that changed. Weird timing.

Thursday: 110 seconds of plank, 5 minutes of kettle bells, followed by 10.1 km of #running (-9°C with a windchill of -13°C), and picked up some groceries and walked home - which led me to regret being on #TeamShorts for fifteen minutes. 🤣

All that slush from yesterday has now frozen solid, making most of the recreational paths … challenging.

#FirstSong of the day was Ships in the Night’s World Turned Cold.

1) Rideau River, frozen over with what look like waves (lines of snow), and a beautiful colourful pore-sunrise sky. 2) Recreational path covered in snow and ice. 3) Pylon on recreational path saying “No sidewalk plows beyond this point”.

To make today’s morning run interesting, I decided to run in shorts and a running singlet. Ended up being an amazing run.

I’m never leaving California. 😻 ❄️

All I've been able to think about since sitting at my desk has been food/drink.

I'm sure I've consumed 1k calories already, but the hanger is real. #running

I get Humane AI Pin's goal for going phone-less while retaining the core benefits. For years now, the best part of my day is strapping on an Apple Watch in the mornings while I walk the dogs, grab coffee, pick up groceries and ease into the day with light errands. All while listening to music and just enjoying the moment.

The idea is picking up steam. Last night, a friend asked me for tips on how to do the same.

First, reduce noise:

  • Disable most alerts in the Watch app, you can still see them on the phone later. The main one is to block any social media DM's.
  • Add a focus mode to block everything, like when SMS is too noisy. Also can swipe to mute.

Second, add utility:

  • Download music you love. Streaming's fine but offline playlists are even better.
  • The Wallet is what I use most, both for Apple Pay and also the Starbucks card.

Hope that helps! Anyone else have a similar routine?

#AppleWatch #Humane #AIPin

cedros,

@alabut I do the same thing. I've been referring to it as "watch mode” in contrast to "phone-less” so as not to scare people much.

I just don’t like to carry a tablet with me every time I leave the house. Just unnecessary.

When Apple enables watch sync with an iPad / Mac... I think I'll be able to go all in on this lifestyle 😅

@The_KamikaZEN Like @SaschaFreud mentioned, WiFi always shows connected when I’m within reach of known networks. Cellular only kicks in when away from phone.

Found this too, looks like what you described is normal behavior. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204562
