It's been obvious for a while now that the latest SUVs and pickup trucks, with their absurdly high front hoods, were deadly to pedestrians. But Justin Tyndall did the math to prove it.

"A 10 cm increase in front-end height causes a 22% increase in pedestrian fatality risk."
"A cap on front-end vehicle heights of 1.25 m would reduce annual US pedestrian deaths by [an estimated] 509."

Happy Peanut Butter Day to all who celebrate.

I will be eating a peanut butter sandwich for lunch to celebrate.

Unfortunately, my daughter will not be as peanuts are a forbidden food at school. But should they be?

Against popular advice and Los Angeles norms, we used public transit (Metrolink regional trains and LA Metro subway) to get from Disneyland to Univeral Studios Hollywood.

8/10. Would do it again.

The LA public transit system still needs improvements (like higher frequency), but it was way better than I expected.

Passenger rail is ridiculously unreliable in Canada. 50% of trains are delayed. And every small delay leads to a big one because freight trains get priority on the railway lines.

Glad to see the NDP's Rail Passenger Priority Act getting attention.

Having a predictable and reliable timetable is the first step to making this a viable form of transportation in Canada.

Heavy trucks and SUVs are a plague on our streets. Good to see European cities get ahead of this.

I'd love to see an aggressive vehicle registration fee proportionate to weight in Canada.

A few months ago our family invested in a shiny new Tern HSD P9 e-cargo bike. It's our first "family vehicle" - shared equally between my wife and me. We use it to transport our 7-year old daughter, pick up groceries, drive to hockey practice, go on hiking trips, and all the other things people with cars might do.

A car-free (or at least car-lite) world is possible.

Most municipalities in BC won't install speed humps on bus routes, so that's exactly what is going on here.

Hopefully, they'll figure out a way of providing safe streets that doesn't impact public transit. The Saanich and Victoria area have seen too many pedestrians hit (and sometimes killed) at flat crosswalks - always on streets that happen to be bus routes.

Hub Cycling is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The progress they've championed is really amazing.

Just compare the 1999 Vancouver cycling map with today. It now covers most of the city and also includes separated AAA routes.

A huge thanks to HUB's staff, volunteers, and 100,000 members for 25 years of progress.

And not just for infrastructure improvements, but also for education and advocacy.

I've used Modo vehicles to haul furniture, access campgrounds around BC, and take road trips across Canada.

If it wasn't for HUB Cycling, Modo, and Translink, Vancouver would be just another car-centric North American city.

Congratulations Nanaimo on banning natural gas in new homes. 💚

This is a huge step for climate action and indoor air quality.

The list of BC municipalities that have implemented similar bans also includes Saanich, Victoria, Whistler, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Squamish, and Port Coquitlam.

Vancouver is not on the list of municipalities who are taking action on climate change by restricting natural gas in new homes, because our new mayor and ABC-majority council are unfortunately climate laggards.

"Banning cars now would be like building cities in space and then banning spacesuits. We need to build places where people can actually live without cars." 🙄 uh, we already built those places and they have too many cars on them, then car apologists came & bulldozed more of it for free parking. @enobacon @bluGill we're still waiting on the final report, but the School Streets closure at our school this year was tremendously popular with kids and parents. There was definitely hesitation going in, but once everyone saw the benefits of closing a street down, the minor inconveniences were largely forgotten.

I'm pretty sure this has been the experience in London and Paris too, which has rolled out much more comprehensive #SchoolStreets than we've experimented with in Vancouver.

Some UBC researchers are conducting a cool study on passing distances and dangerous car behaviour.

They want to put some fancy gear on your bike to record those scary moments when a car zooms by too close and almost knocks you off your bike.

If you ride at least 3 days a week in Metro Vancouver, check it out.

Canada has the least fuel-efficient vehicles in the world.

Because of our cheap gas prices and crappy fuel efficiency standards, most Canadians are driving around vehicles much larger than they actually need.

@eyrea if you want to give it another name, I'm happy to accept that. But the problem of growing vehicle sizes is real and causing all kinds of problems for cities, including more pedestrian deaths and increased maintenance costs.

I hope you recognize that this is something that needs to be dealt with.
