Gonna upgrade my laptop to Ubuntu 24.04… expecting that, like everything else I have done on this laptop involving Ubuntu, I am going to regret this

@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc For at least 15 years now, GNOME has prioritized cool looking but only marginally useful stuff over what users actually need or want. I switched to MATE.

SD cards are the literal worst.

they've expanded to be the size of small hard drives, and devices like the rpi keep using them as boot media, but they:

  • use garbage tier low endurance flash cells internally
  • have little to no overprovisioning for wear
  • perform only the most basic wear levelling
  • have no protocol level integrity checking
  • have few internal error correction features, if any
  • decay comparatively quickly without patrol scrubs
  • do not perform patrol scrubs
  • cannot do PLP
brouhaha,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland As far as I've ever been able to determine, there's no way for the host to inquire whether the SD card has flushed all of its dirty RAM buffers to flash, such that the host knows e.g. that it's safe to power the card down.

It’s kind of unfair to call the Mac a platform when, in fact, it’s a collection of platforms.

We can divide Macs into four CPU eras:

  1. 68K
  2. PowerPC
  3. x86
  4. ARM

And, of course, there’s two OS eras: classic Mac and OS X.

brouhaha,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I know you specifically said Mac, but some of us who still bleed in six colors miss the 6502 era.

My HP 16702A logic analyzer has developed bad sectors on the disk, which today prevented me from accomplishing anything while trying to help John with his Z80 system issues.
(Current issue: peripheral card works when directly plugged directly into test CPU board, but not when plugged into test CPU board via an extender board, or into the "real" system with or without the extender.)
The 16702A has an internal SCSI drive. If I had money to spend, I'd get a SCSI2SD to replace that.

brouhaha,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@philpem I just got an SD card set up for a BlueSCSI v2 for the 16700A. If that works, I'll have to upgrade my other 1670x analyzers.
At some point I'd like to get a WORKING 16702A or 16702B so that I have at least one that I can use without an external monitor. The LCD in my 16702A is non-functional.

brouhaha,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@narylis @philpem I set up theSD with the installation CD .iso for CD-ROM emulation, and a file of 60G of zero for the hard drive emulation.

brouhaha,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@narylis @philpem
The 16702A recognizes the BlueSCSI emulated CD and HDD, but it complains that the CD doesn't have a LIF header.
Maybe the .iso I used is bad. After lunch I'll try another.

brouhaha,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@narylis @philpem It was operator error on my part in copying the image to the SD card. Did it again, correctly, and now the 16702A booted from it and is installing. Yay!

Democrats ask America's most corrupt Supreme Court justice, Clarence Thomas, if he would be kind enough, pretty please, to explain more about his corruption...

He is, of course, not explaining anything -- and daring anyone to do something about it.

I was once at a restaurant when a firefighter came in with a to-go order for his whole crew. I tried to pay for it, and was politely told that while he appreciated the offer, they weren't able to accept gifts.

It's a sad state of affairs when Supreme Court justices don't have as much ethical integrity as local firefighters.

Anyone have an open-source PCB design that 3D renders with components and looks at least moderately interesting? Doesn't need to be anything specific. I just need a 3D model of a PCB for a demo of a simple program.
I've tried using some projects linked from the KiCad web site, but even for the ones where a rendering is shown on the web site, the only renderings I can get have no components, just the bare PCB. I must not have the necessary libraries.
Thanks!!!

brouhaha,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland I specifically cloned that repository a few hours ago, opened the board .pro file in KiCad, asked for a 3D render, and didn't get any components other than the reset button and sync header.

brouhaha,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland I'm using KiCad 8.0.2 on Fedora x86_64.
