@botvolution@mastodon.sdf.org

your unpleasant lizard.

I've been floating in the fediverse since at least 2018 in one guise or another.

    Hmm that new Make Noise Ch.Svr looks tasty, and under the £100 mark too.

    Mind you, it's easily possible to pick up a used Maths for about £200 these days.

    But still, tasty all the same.

    Wasn't MS-DOS 4.0 the buggiest version ever? I seem to remember that it was withdrawn almost immediately in favor of 5.0. Maybe M*S released the source so that young programmers would learn how not to code!

    botvolution,
    @botvolution@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @cenbe I certainly remember everything >= 4 being shit. Anyone who needed to get stuff done stuck with 3.3x and 3.2x had its fanbois.
    I knew one IT manager guy for part of a large public service who preferred dos 2

    Ruby might be faster than you think:

    https://www.johnhawthorn.com/2024/ruby-might-be-faster-than-you-think/

    In other words:

    • First, check your ruby code for strangleholds and remove them.

    • Then, use the Ruby JIT for an easy speed boost

    • Finally, rewrite the whole thing if needed.

    Just got 3 sets of related data for England, Scotland & Wales.

    There's no central repository, has to come from each government's websites separately.

    English data is supplied as .XLSX

    Scottish data is supplied as a .CSV (but imports OK & the layout is same as English data, so comparison is easy.)

    Welsh data is supplied as a .ODS (very good indeed, Wales, well done) but is laid out entirely differently from the English and Scottish data (BAD), making direct comparison extremely difficult.

    Okay, this makes me feel better about my own life choices.

    "The people who buy music gear [...], I would say more than half of them are not really making music on it. They’re just collecting it and playing with it. [...]

    They just buy the software, they play with the knobs, they listen to it for a second, and there’s no shame in it at all.

    [...] it is a hobby one way or another."

    Apparently the new Outlook has a feature that puts your inbox in "focused" view, meaning that half your emails are hidden, including many that you actually need to see.

    Software companies should stop making new features. Every new feature now is terrible.
