I still remember back in 1984, when talking about the same-titled Orwell novel, pundits were confidently declaring that such a surveillance state couldn't happen simply due to the sheer manpower required to monitor everyone in real-time.

LOL

And yet East Germany's Stasi managed it, almost.
I recommend "Stasiland" by Anna Funder.

is TEN FUCKING YEARS OLD

it's a motherfucking decade old!

jfc, my sense of time is like a crusty old tortoise.

I still think of it as a recent show.

Anyway, if you haven't ever seen then you haven't seen the best TV show ever made.

You have missed out on art that is intricately numinous, beautifully immanent.

Ok so I hadn't heard of this so I searched and Wikipedia describes it as a "period drama".
The 1980s is now "period".

Well, goog lorg.

    This is a 10R resistor which gave up its life to save the rest of the module. It was there exactly for when someone got their stripe the wrong way round.
    How do I know? I looked at the NLC build guide for the squid axon.
    Normally this task is undertaken by a diode, btw.

    Should be straightforward to repair.
    The difficult bit is desoldering it without ending up with a blocked hole. (Lol).

    @flockofnazguls @Number1SummerJam

    Fwiw I taught myself to solder this year, and if a shaky handed old git like me can do it, anyone can.
    I use a miniware ts101 iron. Make sure you've got good light and a magnifier. Practice first. (you can buy practice kits on eBay).
    Buy yourself a basic set of decent tools too.
    The ai synthesis guy has a nice page on DIY, with suggestions for a base toolset

    He's talking about building modules of course but it's all applicable to repair too.

    He also links a lot to Amazon but Amazon are arseholes.

    Lots of modern modules are smd & that's a bit of a different skillset, but again, I learned it so anyone should be able to

    The bus seats for seniors and people with disabilities should be prioritized

    I honestly enjoy writing good, descriptive alt text. Once you get used to it, it's no longer a chore, rather a fun exercise.

    It gives you an opportunity to focus on the image you're sharing, sometimes revealing details you might miss.

    It's a great writing challenge as well.

    And it's just the right thing to do to help folks who rely on it.

    botvolution,
    @botvolution@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @stefan
    Sometimes when I've had to describe something slightly unusual or meme-y or chaotic then I've used a sort of Jane Austen wry tone, because why should an image description have to be dry or formal ? Why not try to transmit something about one's personal response to the image? Why not be funny?

    stefan, to accessibility
    @stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

    Not trying to call out anyone in particular, I see a lot of people doing this, but I'm really curious and would like to understand this better.

    Folks who use vague alt text with your images ("a funny book cover", "photo of me outside"), what is your thought process? Is the image description intended for sighted people? Or maybe your admin made alt text mandatory? Or maybe that really does seem sufficient.

    Something I see a lot of - here and at bsky - is posting of images that have captions, with alt-text that is just the caption.
